Meta: New Banner

Submitted by seegoblu on
While it's nice to see a new banner (and sad to move on from Denard) I don't love the generic banner for 2013. It's not an iconic pix and sort of contra to the caption, no? Is a (bobbled?) catch "Manball"?

It's hard to replace the Denard banner.  It was truly an epic banner.  This is a cool pic though, and it will look better when the color is fixed.

...but the font is really generic.  Perhaps it's a nod to the Blogspot days?  A nice varsity font shaped like the uniform numbers would look better IMO, but I'll get used to it and I'll visit the site just as frequently regardless.  Not a big deal.

Actually the whole banner is a little generic, but the font on the MGOBLOG seems off. The all caps probably isn't helping either. (MGoBlog maybe?)

in any practical way, but from an art direction/graphic design/typography standpoint (not photography) the banner is underwhelming.

Avery's injury is what I'm bothered by.

Listen--I love this blog.  I check it way too often.  As long as Brian continues writing stuff like today's "The Story," that's all that really matters.

But the new banner seems a little lame.  The photo is fine but the font looks generic...too bulky or something.  I don't know--the quality of the banner doesn't equal the quality of the blog experience, I guess.  And because I check the site way too often, I'll be seeing that new banner a LOT.

But yeah, whatever.

Fine with me.  Probably will be replaced at some point during the season, but for now I'm happy.  At least it isn't a "never forget" montage of failed OL recruits during the end of the RR era.

I am not crazy about it.. I am curious what the selection process for the picture was? Who else was involved.. what other shots? I don't mind Gallon at all tho.

As for the MGOBLOG.. it has an old school/traditional look to it. Which is usually right up Michigan's ally. I am not wowed by it.. but I can get behind it.

All in all, solid banner. Was just thinking about it the other day with Denard gone and a new era. I just hoped for a more "manly/manball" picture.. but in the end.. I won't care come Saturday.

This banner is not a clean as the previous design.  While the font is the same, the letters are thicker and have less negative space between them.  Also, the image on this banner has a lot more going on.  There's an opposing player, a ball in flight, and fans in the background nearly the length of the banner.  The previous one had Denard's helmet, his shoulder pad/number and a patch of green.  Everything else was negative space.

Finally, MGOBLOG is right justified on this banner.  So you're taking in said image first, and then reading the title since you're brain is trained to scan left to right.  The left justified version felt more natural.

For me it's the difference between walking into an Apple Store and a Meijer's.

It's always funny to see half of the mgobloggers be insanely anal (sometimes downright catty) about every little thing, then the other half are all "yeah whatever". Maybe it's due to the age gaps. Either that or some of you have never had sex before. We all love this site and it's a privilege to be apart of it. We need to spend less time nitpicking and just enjoy the greatest college sports blog on earth

Was done in the past.  The problem is that you cannot use any of the University's trademarks: The winged helmet, the block M, the name of the school, etc.

Basically, you have to use a picture you own or have rights to and still make it sharp without any of the logos.

And I think you even need to make sure you don't have any player likenesses.

MGoBlog received a ceast and desist letter way back for violating these things.
