A few takeaways from this are:

  • Miller will likely start at center
  • Drake Johnson is the #2 back, while Green is #5 and Smith is #6.  However, it does have a big "OR" next to it, which makes me think that it doesn't mean much.
  • Jarrod Wilson is the starting FS
  • Oh, apparently Jeremy Clark weighs 305 pounds.
  • Shallman is listed as a FB
  • Avery is injured
  • Gardner is not listed as our number one WR, but rather as a QB.  Sorry Space Coyote.

I'm not panicking, I'm just saying that Wilson as the starter doesn't mean anything when there are no other options. Avery's hurt and Clark was an extremely raw prospect who has no in-game experience. There's been a lot of shuffling in the defensive backfield recently that makes the unit look shakier than I expected it to, that's all I'm saying.

I hate the "there's no reason to discuss anything until actual football happens" response. Right, shut down the board until next Sunday, guys! It's right up there with "the coaches obviously know more than you, so don't bother questioning them."

I feel better than I did before, when people were upset after the Hoke presser as if the coaches were scrambling to start anyone besides Wilson at safety.

There's a big fat OR at the bottom of the RB list which could represent ORs between all of the RBs. Furthermore, in the past, multiple running backs have played regardless of their technical order. There's no 3rd down back slot listed.

I'm more surprised by Hollowell's inclusion (even though it has been reported he has performed well in camp) because at this point I just assume that all Cass Tech guys are horribly overrated and never expect them to make significant contributions.

NOTE: I really hope this is the case with Damon Webb.

What Cass Tech guys have been overrated besides William Campbell? Thomas Gordon is outplaying his 3-star status. Teric Jones tore up his knee before he had a chance. Boubacar Cissoko could have been okay but had off-the-field issues. I think it's too early to judge the Cass Tech pipeline.

Way to Go Stribling and Lewis!  On the two deep as true freshmen.  And Stribling looks to play a lot.

Guh, Courtney Avery -- only listed as 3d string FS.  Doesn't look good.  And a Josh Furman siting on the 2-Deep (other than special teams).  Wowsers!

Did you not see the asterisk by Avery's name designating that he is injured? Jake Ryan (who is listed as injured just like Avery) is also listed third on the depth chart at SAM, do you really think that he is that low on the chart? Based on what I have heard/read, Avery would have been the starting safety if not for the injury issue. Unless Wilson shows up early, I expect him to get replaced.

will be the same, and not just for injuries. There's enough young but inexperienced talent that will push older guys at some positions.

I guess the rumors about Strobel having a busted arm or hand are just that.

That's pretty much always the case.  It's sort of cliched to talk about guys being "gamers," but there's some truth to it.  Some guys show up in practice, some guys show up in games.  You just don't always know who until you start playing for real.  Three or four games in is when you can start setting your two-deep in stone, barring injury of course.

The fact that Blake Countess is listed at the #1 Nickel and #1 Right Corner is interesting to me. Looks like we're going to be seeing a lot of Stribling this year.

Not sure what happens with Countess since he's listed as the starter at RCB AND Nickel.

Regardless, it means that Stribling's going to play.  Based on what we saw in a recent CTK of  a scrimmage, Stribling, #8, was making plays and looks really good.  What a steal!

as a Kick Off Returner already, but I wonder if they should be keeping him away from harms way with the injury to Amara.  I'd hate to see him get hurt doing something other than his specialty if our WR depth is in jeopardy.

Perhaps the most surprising thing is the lack of surprises.  It turns out that the coaches haven't really been hiding anything.  Wilson is starting at safety.  Glasgow and Miller are both starting.

The only notables are that Stribling is on the two-deep and appears to be the RCB in nickel situations, since Countess is listed as the #1 nickel.  Of course, that could go the other way and we could see Dymonte as the nickel and Stribling sitting, but he's still on the two deep.  Also Jackson as the "OR" with Chesson; I would have guessed Reynolds was ahead of Jackson, but this probably not significant.  Chesson, Jackson, and Reynolds will all be fighting for playing time, and hopefully one of the emerges as the leader on Saturday.  Finally, Braden isn't even on the depth chart at LG; Joey B. is the 3rd-string.  I guess Braden is just a tackle.

The RB depth chart is pretty much expected.  We'll see how far up the ladder Green and Smith can climb during the season.  I suspect Fitz and Drake won't make it easy for them; I believe Hayes is probably our 3rd-down back, but don't count out Drake.

Jourdan Lewis is an "OR" with Delonte Hollowell for the #2 LCB.  This bodes extremely well for our future secondary.  Combine that with Wilson, Dymonte, Hill, and Clark--two freshmen and two sophomores--all being on the depth chart at safety, and our future seems pretty bright on the back end.

While I'm excited about this depth chart, it's real hard not to look at it and think, "We're still one year away."  There are so many freshmen and sophomores, and so few juniors and seniors.

I wouldn't look too much into the chart. I highly doubt Rawls or Hayes are in front of Green and Smith. I'd bet Green his #2 and Smith is #3 (or Smith #2 and Green #3 for the anti-Green people).

McCray is listed as an MLB.  That might be the most surprising thing on this depth chart.  Combined with his number change, I think this suggests that he will be playing this year, at least on ST.  I'm not sure MLB will actually be McCray's position, but the fact that he's on the depth chart indicates that he might see the field.
