Hoke presser, 8/22/2013: Shane will backup Devin, etc.
Hoke: Referenced the 3 J's (Jeremy + Joe + Jehu) as rotational replacements at WR for Darboh. Has no problem with rotating. #Team134Camp

Hoke: Starting center still not determined #Team134Camp
— Michigan Football (@umichfootball) August 22, 2013
Hoke: Shane Morris participated in scrimmage today with 1's and 2's. He will backup Devin Gardner. #Team134

UPDATE:
Also from today, Brady Hoke says Dennis Norfleet will be Michigan's primary kick and punt returner.

And MGoBlog rejoiced.

Something can be widely expected and still be "news" when announced. Besides, being highly touted doesn't GUARANTEE anything.
August 22nd, 2013 at 8:00 PM ^
- Shane had mono his senior year and had a noticable drop in production
- Cleary has an extra year learning the playback (read: learning how to hand the ball off correctly)
- True freshman QBs are generally terrible
I bet you $1 that Cleary is that first backup QB to see game time this year
August 22nd, 2013 at 8:20 PM ^
Why the hell would I take this bet? They obviously do not want to give Shane any playing time because if they had the option to, he would get a red shirt. They would like to keep the option to red shirt available, which means they are praying Devin remains healthy and other QBs would get mopping duty.
August 22nd, 2013 at 9:16 PM ^
In real situations, but I expect the first backup we see will be Shane to get him some experience once the game is safely in hand.
August 23rd, 2013 at 9:53 AM ^
Using your (dumb) logic. Derrick Green is clearly the #1 or #2 RB on this team. When actuality, he's fighting with Smith for the #5 spot.
August 22nd, 2013 at 9:34 PM ^
Good LAWD are people pissy lately. Who the hell cares if it's breaking news (to you)? It's straight from the head coach's mouth, from today's press conference. Get over yourself.
August 22nd, 2013 at 10:27 PM ^
+100. Thank You.
August 22nd, 2013 at 10:44 PM ^
We need the point system back very badly
August 22nd, 2013 at 11:36 PM ^
Why? To make yourself feel high and mighty by down voting a post, which actually does nothing in reality? Yeah, we reeeeeeally need that thing back.
August 22nd, 2013 at 6:44 PM ^
Question: If Devin plays each and every offensive snap this year and Morris is only listed as the backup, can he still redshirt?
I think Green plays this year and Smith redshirts.
Chesson will be the other outside guy.
Norfleet will be used for jet sweeps and WILL get a bubble screen.
August 22nd, 2013 at 6:45 PM ^
Quick, Heiko, tell Borges!
August 22nd, 2013 at 6:51 PM ^
Yes.
August 22nd, 2013 at 6:55 PM ^
redshirt only gets burned if he plays. depth chart doesnt matter
August 22nd, 2013 at 7:06 PM ^
Yes Shane can still redshirt but in all honesty he's going to see the field at some point, whether its mop up duty or maybe a play or 2 while Devin is nicked up, he's going to play.
August 23rd, 2013 at 12:48 AM ^
With that in mind, we should play him during garbage time in the early games, to make sure he is ready. As has been pointed out, it's not the end of the world if he doesn't redshirt. We have other elite recruits who will follow him. And as has been pointed out, two years of starting is all you can expect at Michigan: ask Grbac, Navarre, Griese, Brady, et al. The bottom line is that we need him to be ready to play this year because he most certainly is the back up. We cannot afford to blow a game like Nebraska again this year. Surely that is a lesson the coaches learned in '12.
August 22nd, 2013 at 7:22 PM ^
I'm not sad if we play him. Speight is legit and we will get talented QBs when we want them.
August 22nd, 2013 at 7:41 PM ^
So are you saying there are time when we don't want talented QBs?
August 22nd, 2013 at 10:19 PM ^
You of all people don't know this yet? You can be listed as the starter for the entire year, but if you don't actually play, you can redshirt. Thankfully you go back to high school soon.
August 23rd, 2013 at 8:47 AM ^
No, If #12 is still in there vs. any team that UM may have a nice lead going into the 4th and you don't put Shane in, we (this board) will lose our shit. I may fly home and Bubble Wrap Devin myself if need be.
August 22nd, 2013 at 6:46 PM ^
I wish freshman OL weren't like 99% guaranteed a redshirt. It may sound dumb but I'd rather see Kugler at center than Miller/Glasgow. But of course I'm just a dumb fan.
August 22nd, 2013 at 6:56 PM ^
Based on what? Recruiting stars?
August 22nd, 2013 at 7:37 PM ^
guaranteed to redshirt and not 100%. Because if they're ready to step in and play right away, they don't get redshirted.
August 22nd, 2013 at 9:53 PM ^
to me this encapsulates like 99.9% of what's wrong with some of the people on this blog. it just makes zero sense.
August 23rd, 2013 at 2:48 AM ^
Well, 99.3% of all statistics are made up ...
August 22nd, 2013 at 6:46 PM ^
Awwwwww yeah: https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8324/8347157127_b0b7767256_o.gif … RT @nickbaumgardner Brady Hoke says Dennis Norfleet will be Michigan's primary kick and punt returner.
August 22nd, 2013 at 7:17 PM ^
Before this year is over you just know he's going to take one all the way. /Musberger'd
August 22nd, 2013 at 6:49 PM ^
When Darboh went out I wasn't too worried because I figured Chesson was of similar quality, and could fill that void without too much of a dropoff. If the coaches see Chesson as on the same level as Jackson and Reynolds, that says very bad things about the #2 WR position. Bummer.
On the other hand, it's great to see the freshmen RBs and Shane progressing. And I'm very happy that Norfleet was able to lock down the punt returning job as well as kicks.
August 22nd, 2013 at 7:01 PM ^
Or very good things about Joe and Jeremy. Ending the negativity one thread at a time. Glass half full people!!
August 22nd, 2013 at 7:19 PM ^
Glass half full; glass half empty. Either way, we all agree that the glass isn't full yet.
August 23rd, 2013 at 8:08 AM ^
Joe has shown some potential in highlights and from practice buzz seems to be a guy who may actually catch a pass this year (unlock his blocking duties last year). Jackson, on the other hand, will be the same guy he has been the past three years. A guy who is too slow to be an option on the field. I hope this was just the coaches trying to keep him from feeling bad because if Chesson is really fighting it out with Jackson, that's bad news.
August 22nd, 2013 at 7:04 PM ^
I think your blowing it a bit out of rotation. We were going to see a bunch of Reynolds and Jackson anyway even with Darboh starting.
August 22nd, 2013 at 7:11 PM ^
I think knowledge of the offense and route running are the things keeping Chesson at the same level as Jackson and Reynolds at this time.
August 22nd, 2013 at 8:04 PM ^
So are we just forgetting about Dileo here???? He's our second best receiver
August 23rd, 2013 at 12:50 AM ^
Or that was coach-speak like 95% of everything else said in the press conference, the main point of which was to motivate Chesson to kick it into gear.
August 22nd, 2013 at 6:51 PM ^
wooohooo norfleet punt returner!
August 22nd, 2013 at 6:53 PM ^
I see lots of attempts to run outside week 2.
August 22nd, 2013 at 6:53 PM ^
The fact that the center position is still up in the air doesn't bode well since the two guards seem have locked down their position and the they haven't been able to really form a chemistry with either center. That could really hamper the running game inside
August 22nd, 2013 at 6:59 PM ^
no matter who starts at center next week, I think we see Glasgow at some point in the ND game.
August 22nd, 2013 at 7:11 PM ^
then you must be saying he will be playing next week as well even if he doesnt start. but I'm not one to rotate linemen because the line only gets better the more they play together
August 22nd, 2013 at 7:13 PM ^
Whoever starts, will play throughout unless there is an injury. You don't want to be rotating centers, of all positions that would be the toughest to do.
August 22nd, 2013 at 7:25 PM ^
really? you mean to tell me if Miller starts and ND starts blasting him off the line 4 yards they won't pull him for a bigger, strong center? yes, you don't want to rotate centers but I have a hard time believing that in game 2 they won't pull a guy.
August 22nd, 2013 at 8:08 PM ^
At this point I think they have a good idea of each of their ability to block. If they decide that Miller is the best option, I expect them to give him a fair chance. The first game is the audition, whoever starts vs ND I expect to remain there. Now they could pull whoever that is for a series or two to get their head straight if things are going badly, but if our coaches haven't pegged "the guy" before kickoff vs ND then we're all gonna die.
August 22nd, 2013 at 7:20 PM ^
I predict Glasgow will start somewhere because I think he's good. He looked pretty good in the spring game, he looked good pulling near the goal line on the last scrimmage highlights, and he started the spring game and ran with the first string in the last scrimmage. The dude is 6' 6" and moves like a football player. My guess for the starters would be Glasgow at guard and Miller at center. The only way I can see Glasgow not starting is if it were Braden at guard and Miller at center.
It would be one huge line if it were Lewan-Bryant-Glasgow-Kalis-Schofield.
The suspense will end Friday after today's scrimmage so the line can get some run as a unit the rest of the way.
August 23rd, 2013 at 7:07 AM ^
if Glasgow starts is only at center. Kalis and Byrant have locked up the guard positions and Braden hasn't been practicing at guard for for some time now.
August 22nd, 2013 at 7:00 PM ^
He will take 1 back for sure this year!
August 22nd, 2013 at 7:03 PM ^
today he had 186 receiving yards and a TD in my NCAA dynasty against #2 TCU! We're in good hands
August 22nd, 2013 at 9:18 PM ^
He transferred to Illinois for playing time in mine. He would have been the #2 guy the next year too!
August 22nd, 2013 at 10:09 PM ^
Maybe he left because you killed 5 hookers....
August 23rd, 2013 at 11:45 AM ^
