Youth Day Thread

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on
Here at Youth Day or formerly known as fan day. So far I've gotten the entire WRs and RBs group on Flag of Champions I. Anyone else here?

the point is true. The whole 'experience' has been corrupted by assholes looking to make a quick buck. Getting autographs is cool, but when fleabay opened the floodgates, both the garage sale and fan day became a horrible joke.

Emphasis on kids was pretty apparent, took my twins, they had a good time. One met Hoke, the other had his hat signed by the QBs. Lines were long, far more kids than adults, and sure a handful taking advantage of the situation but enforcement was pretty tight. It was more what 'fan day/kids day' should be...take a few bad apples to ruin the whole darn bunch. It's not a pedestal, it's today's reality.

Yes, they are the db ebay hawks. However, there are also married, childless adults like myself that like a thing or two to line the walls of their Michigan fan caves. Bando is standing on a pedestal passing down judgement like he is better than other people.

FYI, I didn't go this year and haven't since they changed  the name to Youth Day. I still go to Skate the Wolverines for the hockey team.

Unless there is a big bold sign on the site or at the gates that says NO AUTOGRAPHS FOR ADULTS I see no problem. They changed the title of the event to focus it more on the kids.

Which is why they added bounce houses on the field and have the cheer and dance team there. Obviously that isn't for the adults.

Believe it or not, some people have hobbies that may not interest you or that you care for. I know it's crazy isn't it? But you tear them down for it....

Who's the unhealthy one again?

Notice I said I didn't go the past two year when it has been marketed as Youth Day. As a teacher and a high school cross country track coach, I feel bad taking up little kid's spot in line for an autograph.

I don't feel bad get getting autographs from michigan student athletes. As an alum I love supporting current Michigan students. When I do skate with the wolverines, I spend the majority of the time welcoming the freshman to Michigan, letting them know the alums are behind them.

I don't see a problem supporting student athletes.

How does getting an autograph from a teenager="supporting a student athlete"?

Good on you that you slap the freshmen on the back and welcome them to Michigan, because that's what an adult should do in that situation. Good job, cool story.

Asking them to sign your M flag when you're done isn't what adults do. That's the point.

Believe it or not the freshmen still find the autograph and the attention thing cool, especially the walk ons on the hockey team.

You and are not going to see eye to eye. Like someone said above, that is ok. I like collecting autographs, wearing jerseys to games, and never sitting at football and hockey games. I even like the alternate hockey jerseys (Big Chill and GLI). We are exact opposites.

Fair point. I have just never really understood the appeal of having a 20 year old football player (or any athlete for that matter) write his name on a picture. If they were a superstar of some sort, it would be cool for them to sign a helmet or something just as a cool memory...but I still honestly have never really understood the whole autograph thing. And people pay SOOO much money for them...

For one wish I was there. If you don't want to go/be there fine but the people that do no need to rain on their parade. This blog is ALWAYS so negative. ..I don't get it.

Devotee that is a good haul to add to your collection! Have fun and give a Go Blue! for me!!

But I was polite about it. My daughter won early admission, my nephew did not. I asked the man "handling" the qb's if I could get a ball signed for him, he said go ahead. I said, I don't want to break the rules, and if it's a prob, I will walk away, he said thanks for asking, but it's ok. I talked to all 4 available qb's, my daughter had a ball signed, my nephew had his ball signed, and I got a hug from him like never before. That is what youth day is about.

This is my issue.  It's supposed to be for kids.  I probably should have said that in my original post instead of focusing on the adult autograph seeker thing.

I don't know.  I'm not anti-autographs in general, but once I had a few classes with football players it kinda changed my perspective.  They are student athletes that get exploited enough - let them sign for kids and leave it at that.

Agree with the classes thing, and just being around a lot of athletes in general when you go here. I've had classes with Denard, Devin, Lewan, etc., and you just realize they're regular people. I really do enjoy watching them play football and seeing them represent the university, but I don't need to wait in line to have them write their name on something. The kids enjoy it and that's great, but no need for adults to hound them or be overbearing.

Btw semi-related (football players writing names on things)...Jabrill Black would just write "Jabrill" on his homeworks for a large lecture class. I found it amusing.

My favorite athletes-in-class moments were in an American Culture class I had with about half the football and basketball teams. When we'd have film screenings on Monday evenings and the sign-in sheet would get passed around, it was uncanny how many gigantic linemen-types had suddenly acquired loopy, girly, cursive handwriting.

First break all the rules and ask forgiveness later. It's how you get woman, generally it's how the rich get rich. In my eyes it's those who break barriers that make the biggest difference in life. Whatever though. I do agree that it is a youth day and you should take your child with you. That is if you have one. I just hate your statement about rules. I hate most rules and have moved up the corporate ladder by breaking or completely ignoring status quo. Go blue.

That's your advice? Really? "...break all the rules and ask forgiveness later. It's how you get woman, generally it's how the rich get rich." " I hate most rules and have moved up the corporate ladder by breaking or completely ignoring status quo." I've been in business for 25 years and have found exactly the opposite to be true. You seem to confuse barriers with rules and The Michigan Difference with something far less befitting an alumnus, if you are one. But I doubt you are.

I'm not sure the blog is always negative, but right now people seem especially annoyed, I'm guessing because everyone's so impatient for the football games to start.  Look at the RR, fantasyland, and PGA threads today.  There's a whole lot worse slanging matches going on than in this thread.

pretty much agree. I am impatiently waiting for the season to start, start planning my curriculum for the year (AP Bio was completely overhauled), and waiting for the hockey season to begin in late September.

At least Breaking Bad is premiering tonight, along with the second to last episode of the season for True Blood.

MGoBlogland is like a large pack of semi-civilized dogs of every description and temperament, ranging from almost invisible long-time lurkers on one end of the spectrum to constantly obnoxious and aggressive assholes trying desperately to assert their dominance on the other, and everthing else in between.

If there are actual events to hold their attention they all get along more or less well, but if boredom sets in, snarling fights of varying intensities and duration occur constantly.

I have been to it now 3 times with my kids and all we ever do is run down the tunnel, throw the ball around on the field and take a few family photos. Autograph lines are great to keep everyone out of our hair down on the field.
