Superstition before or during the game?

Submitted by UMxWolverines on
I know I'm a really superstitious person, I wear the same exact clothes to every game (but i wash them first). What things must you do (or not do) every game day? edit: also, last year i bought a brand new #1 jersey before the toledo game and wore it for the game. i sold the jersey in the off season, and so far i haven't bought a new one this season, so I don't think i'm going to! I'll stick to my all in shirt!

I don't wear my 2007 Rose Bowl shirt during game day -- ever. This is because we have never won a game while I'm wearing it ... and when I wear it, we lose in a most spectacular FAIL manner. USC, App State, Oregon ... and that was the end of it. Never again.

M has suffered when I wear my 1998 Rose Bowl sweatshirt; I only wear it in celebration of big wins.

It only took me two games (losses at ND, Syracuse; the first two of 1998) to stop wearing it for games.

We got season tix the first time for the 07-08 season. We bought a program for the first gane...the Horror. We bought a program for the 2nd game... Oregon. We stopped buying programs. We apologize for ever having bought a program, and hope you dont know where we live.

I never watch the game with people. I stay by myself and I don't speak about the game (being over, yeah we won) until it really is over. This is mainly because I live in Ohio with only OSU fans. I remember the Braylon vs MSU game, I got so many texts from people making fun of me and laughing at me ... joke's on them, ha! I wear the same hat too.

I have been trying to quit forever and was doing well up until the Notre Dame game...everytime I had a dip in we did well. Needless to say I am not quitting anytime soon.

I have one of those creepy-ass looking U of M gnomes that they sell, I named him 'lil Blue and I watch every game with him, or I leave him in my recliner if I go to the bar or the stadium. The first week I could have sworn he messed with the volume on my tv while I was gone. I also wear the same outfit and only wash my jersey after the season's over.

I look for the number 72. It is a very lucky number indeed and when I see it a lot, good fortune seems to come my way (including Michigan Football wins). When it is conspicuously absent, it means the opposite. For instance: I was at The Horror. I left at half time because I couldn't take any more nagging to leave from my wife and we were both getting hideously sunburned. On our way out of the stadium the team buses were lined up along Stadium in ascending numerical order. So it was like bus#16, bus#32, bus#54, etc, etc. So there was bus#71 and bus#73, nose to ass, with 72 conspicuously missing. I told my wife that Michigan was destined to lose the game. We all know how that one ended up. Beware the power of 72.

on the morning of the notre dame game, i awoke with text from someone i didn't even know, and it said: "...god is going to shift things around for you today and let things work in your favor. if you believe , send it. if you don't believe, delete it. god closes doors no man can open & god opens doors no man can close. if you need god to open some doors for you...send this to ten people. have a blessed day" during the game, a really pretty girl i was talking to said yes to go with me to the game next week, and also michigan upsets notre dame in one of the best game i have ever been to. quite a blessed day indeed.

While plans are currently in motion to expand... my current 'fleet' of UM jerseys include #1, 2, 3, 7, 8, 10, 15, 16, 20, 21, 23, 32, 56, 60, and 86. As a rule, I only wear home jerseys during a home game and vice versa. I also try to always wear the # of a player who is currently a starter or one of my favorites. That being said, I started the first two games with the #21 (I know Hemingway didn't play vs. ND, but I didn't want to mess with the good mojo from Week 1)... and on Saturday I used the lower opponent to get the #86 its first win of the season. Not sure which one gets the nod next week... but away #23 looks to be the favorite for Oct. 3 right now.

It's gonna be very cold in Nov. if they are undefeated and I am wearing my Maize Adidas Tshirt and cargo shorts. Last year I wore the same pair of maize and blue shoes to the first three home games and I haven't put them on since. Aside from Michigan Football I have no superstitious tendancies. Am I only insane on Saturdays in the fall? I know the clothes I wear and the actions of one person in a crowd of 106,000+ cannot affect the outcome of a game, but for some reason I do these crazy things anyway.

I put my #97 jersey in storage by accident (Note: I think the 97 represents the last national championship. Right now, #97 is our third-string PK. Have any notable players ever worn 97? Note part 2: Before you can ask, you don't get a choice of number on women's jerseys, AFAIK) but it got mixed results last year during football and then basketball seasons, so maybe it just needs a rest. Instead this year I've been wearing a plain T-shirt in maize and a pair of blue jeans. So far I like it.

I wear a Michigan T to work on Friday and I wear a new #2 Adidas jersey (unwashed) during the game with my Michigan hat sitting on the top of my couch. Two years ago I had the same ritual but with an authentic Mike Hart jersey. Good topic.

A pregame meal of a dozen-and-a-half to 2 dozen wings. It all starts @ 12A of game day with the prepping of the wings . . . Head hits the pillow around 1 AM, wake up at 10:30, fire up the deep fryer, get 'em nice and crispy, toss 'em in the homemade sauce, & I'm eatin' @ noon regardless of game time . . .

When watching a game on TV, I cannot take a piss throughout the duration of the game. This sucks because I must curb my beverage intake early, but its better than pissing away our chances. However, when at Big House, or a road stadium, I can piss without penalty during halftime or the breaks between quarters. For every ticket in hand, another case is slammed.

Not so much a superstition, just a fun thing . . . since Francis Schmidt, tOSU coach tried to convince his team that Michigan was beatable by telling them that "they put their pants on one leg at a time," on gamedays I put my pants on with both legs at the same time.

I listen to the 1st quarter on the radio, then watch the rest of the game. They lost about 75% of the time when I watched game from the beginning. I went to the Wisc. game last year, and still have the tickets on the fridge. I may have unjinxed myself with seeing them live.

I wear the same maize shirt for every home game and the same blue shirt for every away game. I also make sure I wear a Michigan shirt to work for Mondays and Fridays so the Buckeyes there can start and end the week looking at Michigan gear. I've started a new superstition this year by rocking shoelaces around my wrist as well.

I wear a Michigan shirt to school on Friday, sleep in a Michigan shirt Friday night, and wear a Michigan shirt during the game. But I NEVER wear the 2007 student shirt during the game, because that one is bad luck. EDIT: Realized today that I've worn my Michigan hat during all 3 games this year, now it must become part of my gameday outfit!

My mother-in-law has used my favorite Michigan coffee cup 4 times to my memory. I remember because it irritates the hell out of me because she is on OSU fan. That's my daily cup! Two of those times were on game day. Last year vs Wisconsin and this year vs Notre Dame. I'm not sure, but I may be going to the city zoning committee to inquire about adding on a mother-in-law's suite. Aghhh...just shoot me.

The night before the Michigan game I always play "The Victors" on my Ipod through my computer speakers at max volume and sing to it of course. The before I go to bed I listen to it one more time while I lay in bed. I wear my 20 player tee to bed including my maize bed pants that have Michigan helmets, the University seal, the words WOLVERINES and Michigan, including the almighty M logo and the mascot. When I wake up I pat my Michigan flag three times on my wall for the number of wins we have so far. Then I wear my ALL IN FOR MICHIGAN shirt under my #7 jersey, my Michigan M wristbands, my Michigan shorts and my Michigan hat including my Michigan fan scarf and sit in front of the tv and get ready to watch the action. I also wear the same when I go to the game. Sometimes if we start to get in desperation mode like in the ND game did I take a knee and watch the game on floor (I truly believe this works call me crazy but I believe it cause they've won everytime I've done it. After we win I chant "The Victors" then watch the highlights. Or if I'm at the game I just stand an cheer it.

I'm glad I'm not the only one. Ok, so This year I finally get my wife to agree to take down the summer flag a week before the season starts. I put up my Tigers flag to wait until the morning of the WMU game. Then the Tigers win 6 straight games. I can't screw up their mojo so I leave up the flag Michigan wins so it's all good. Then the Tigers go into a slide and lose like 4 or 5 in a row So I take it down and put up the big Block M. Then they beat Notre Shame, and EMU so it's up to stay all season long ...hopefully. I've also worn the same #6 home jersey during each game this year. I'll wear my # 15 away jersey when they play Sparty, and change accordingly to keep them winning as much as possible. Looks strange when I see it here but I seem to be in good company. GO BLUE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I wear a dark blue shirt and khaki pants never with any Michigan logos. Then on the day of the game I wear one of my many Michigan polos or Tshirts. Last year I would wear a Michigan polo on dress down Fridays and well all know how that turned out.

I am very superstitious. First of all, I grew my mustache for Michigan. When Michigan won, I decided to keep it until we lost. It looks terrible, but I do this for my team. Additionally, I wear the same thing to every game as long as we keep winning - my good luck Michigan hockey shirt. Lastly, I have not picked up my student football t-shirt. I wore the student shirt to the first game each of the past two years with poor results (I haven't worn either shirt since), so this year I didn't even pick mine up. I realize none of this actually affects the games in anyway, but I'm crazy.

I have a coffe mug which I bought after the '96 season; it has a picture of Bo on one side and his coaching record at Miami and Michigan on the reverse. I only use my Bo mug during Michigan games, and I always sit in the same place on the couch. At all other time, the mug sits on the highest shelf in our kitchen. I only rinse the cup with hot water, until the season is over when it gets a complete washing. The mug ritual started during the undefeated 1997 season.

During the week leading up to a game, I cannot wear the colors of the opponent. So, with Indiana coming up, no Red and White striped shirt. If we're playing a team with blue as one of its colors, I can only wear blue with maize, (or yellow). After we win the game, I usually wear the opponents colors in celebration. Admittedly, there's not much red in my wardrobe.

I, too, know none of this has any impact on what happens on the field; but it can't hurt, right?

No specific superstitions per se, except that a particular spot on the couch is reserved as the rally seat. You can't abuse the rally seat. It's only for emergencies, and it doesn't always work. Only so much magic in the rally seat. I think it used most of its power for the season during the Wisconsin game last year and ran out during UVA-UNC. But if I start doing something and then we start winning? Well, you just can't stop doing whatever it is that's bringing the magic. Likewise, the opposite if it's causing us to lose. I joined in the CIL chat during Notre Dame after Stonum's kick return and like ten minutes later we were down 17-14. Got nothing but love for you guys and gals but if hanging out in the CIL means the defense is going to fold like clean laundry, I want no part of that action.
