OT: PS3 or Xbox 360?

But with your criteria it might be XBOX. I personally don't like the XBOX controls/controllers and I also really love that the PS3 can play Blu-Ray movies which was the big selling point for me over the 360.
So if you want to get blu-rays/up convert dvds, are an avid movie fan, and want to enjoy the latest in games then I'd say go with the PS3. If you just want a gaming system I'd say that the 360 has better overall games.

Had a PS2 when they were new, then had an xbox for a long time and I just couldn't get used to the controller. Going back to PS3 was the best thing ever as far as controller comfort is concerned. Also blu-ray is a big plus for me.

but i've had to send my PS3 in three times to have it fixed....everytime, it was the disc drive, which failed to read my discs. So make sure whatever you get, that you get the biggest warrenty you can.

as far as PS3 goes. Not nearly as many people have problems with their PS3s as people that have problems with Xbox. You will have to pay for online gaming with Xbox and the PS3s is free. There also are quite a few more people on XBOX that I know of, but I got a PS3 because I have always had a playstation. I'm happy with the PS3, but either way you go you will get a pretty good product. Based on my experiences with my PS3 and my brother having an XBOX, I would recommend a PS3.

I would recommend PS3 for the following reasons:
Free Online Play
Built-in WiFi support
Built-in HDMI support
Built-in Blu-Ray support
Ability to play .avi files downloaded from the internet (Has the Divx and Xvid codecs preloaded)
Ability to stream a media server.
Ability to stream Youtube
Ability to surf the internet.
The new Slim PS3 is coming out soon, and they price-dropped it to $299.
I literally use mine multiple times per day, and I'm not a huge gamer, but I am a big fan.
The Xbox is a fine gaming system, but they get you $$$ on all the extras.

Xbox, IME. I have both, and honestly only use the PS3 for Blu Rays. Gaming is much better on the 360. The only downside is that with the Xbox, there is no wireless connection, you have to buy a wireless adaptor, while the PS3 has it built in. You also have to pay for Xbox live, while you don't have to pay for that service with the PS3. The PS3 and Xbox 360 elite are both only $299 now, which is nice.

Thanks for your help... I can't seem to find an Xbox wireless adapter cheaper than $77. Because of that, and the monthly charge for Xbox live, I'm thinking about going for the PS3. Is the online gaming for Xbox significantly better? Would this justify the cost?

Well it depends. If your tv is close enough to your internet connection, you could go that route, and just use the ethernet cable that comes along with the Xbox (at least most models, not sure though). If you did that, you wouldn't have to buy the adaptor. I haven't played many games online on PS, so I honestly can't give you a real good opinion. All of my gaming friends have Xbox, which helped with the decision.

I would rather fork over a couple of dollars a month and use a service that I know to be reliable, than depend on game developers to develop a useful online system, which I have heard can often be flaky.
Also, streaming Netflix and being a Media Center Extender make me love my Xbox.
The people that I know that have purchased a PS3 just watch movies on it, and game on their 360...

Xbox Live OWNS Playstation Online in EVERY way.
I only use my PS3 to play my old PS2 games. It would collect dust otherwise.

so I had to go with xbox 360 and I love it! If you go with the 360 dont go cheap,buy the one with the most hard drive. The cheap 360 doesnt even have enough memory to hold much more than names for all the players on madden.

That said....if anyone has a PS3 that they want to trade for my 360, let me know. The BluRay, free online, built in wireless, MLB The Show, and the fact that my brothers both have PS3's are the reasons that I want to switch.

Games do not look better on 360 than PS3. Play Bioshock on both and then report back to me.
360 has better online gaming but you have to pay for it. They have Halo, which is great online. But you can get Call of Duty for both and play online for free on PS3.
Sports games, in my opinion, have always been better on PlayStation consoles, so if that is your reasoning for buying either then go with the PS3. The online play for both of those will be the same and again, Playstation Online is free.

I have both and the PS3 is hands down the better system. If you get the PS3 Slim you will not be disappointed.

ps3 hands down. watch blue rays, connect via wireless internet, use it as a web browser, free online play, less chance of breaking. it rocks.

While the online play is tremendously better with a 360, PS3's are also much more reliable. A friend of mine has had multiple 360's develop the "red ring of death". I have never had a problem with my PS3 and have loved everything about it. PS3s also come with a built in wireless connector, thus you can put it anywhere if you have a wireless router. The available games is probably a wash, however it depends on the type of games that you would like to play in that category.

have both, xbox pwns ps3 for gaming period. community on 360 dominates. i dust off my ps3 for blu-ray and i played metal gear solid, that is it.
and i don't game on wireless so that is a wash.

If sports games are all you play go with the Ps3.
I had the 360 for a year and a half and I just traded it in for the Ps3 slim once the price got reduced and everything.
If your a baseball fan the Xbox is useless.... MLB 2k9 = worst game ever, the physics are like somthing straight from the Sega Dreamcast.... And The Show is the best sports game around except for maybe NCAA 10 or Madden and it's only for the Ps3.

I have a playstation 3 and love it. Also Xbox 360s fail a whole lot more than ps3, and ps3 online play is free.

I recommend a 360, unless you really want to play a good baseball game. Overall, despite the cost, Xbox Live is better than whatever playstation has for online play and the majority of sports games are available for both. However, if you want to play baseball games a lot, then I would say go for the PS3, as MLB the Show (only for PS3) is significantly better than MLB 2k (available for both). Either way, the differences aren't too apparent and, while the 360 can have some problems breaking down (mine broke for 3rd or 4th time recently), PS3 has problems as well, though probably not quite to the same extent.

My two cents:
360: Online play with the 360 is much, much better than the PS3. Even when you factor in having to pay for it. Also, I like more of the games for the 360 better than the PS3 too -- although Infamous and Killzone are pretty fun.
PS3: unless you have an HDTV, the Blu-ray playback is a moot point. But if you do, its a pretty big plus. For just $299 for the slim, you're getting one of the best/better Blu-ray players out there. That's pretty cool.
Outside of that, there really isn't much of a difference. Games look great on both systems and the controllers are pretty much the same. Really, either way you can't go wrong.
If a lot of your friends have a 360, go with that -- online play is worth it. If not, go with the PS3 for the movie aspect.

I also have both and the added cost to get the xbox online is a pain, plus the controllers on the PS3 just rule. When you include blu-ray its not close in my opinion. Plus there are some really interesting things you can do with your PS3 such as streaming movies to your PSP if you have one, and I think generally the overall look of games is superior on the PS3 as well. Still if you were a Halo guy, that could change your view, but just for sports games I would choose the ps3.

I just bought the new PS3 slim a couple of weeks ago. It was a tougher choice (360 v. PS3) when the PS3 was $100 more, but the new slimmer design and lower price point sold me. I'm a very casual gamer, though; serious folks might have a more informed opinion.

Both are good systems. I have a 360 and my brother has a PS3, and most game developers work on both systems. Figure out what games you want, then see if any are exclusive to one system.
Also, good luck with the LSAT. As someone who just sat for his third different bar exam, welcome to a world of frayed nerves and standardized testing. :-)

Xbox 360 has one advantage, it is better online. But even then, you have to pay for it so for me that neutralizes the one advantage it did have. PS3 has blue ray, free online, way better controllers, and IMO better graphics, even if only by a hair. But at the end of the day, I would get whatever system most of your friends have. Even though I think the PS3 is better, I have the most fun playing games online with my friends. If all of my friends had a 360, I probably would have bitten the bullet and gotten a 360 just for that reason alone.

If you buy the PS3 just for the Blu ray, you might want to know that it is a fad format. The ultra def format has been standardized and will hit the consumer market before a PS4 of Xbox 720 will be launched. It has hit a lot of movie theaters already. You might have paid $10 to watch the quality you will soon have at home. Remember, We should have had HDTV in 1989. Fights over the standard format (1080) pushed it back for years.
Blu Ray is a Great Storage media device but the actual visual quality is only "on Par" with high end up converter systems like Kaleidescape.

Get whatever your friends have. While there are minor pros/cons for both consoles, the ability to game online with your friends and then recap around the watercooler on Monday morning trumps all.

My take is the online play and game quality is mostly a wash. The blu ray is a good feature (you're not future proofing your home theatre system here...you're buying a damn video game system). The fact online play is free is good.
But the most relevant feature is the home network/internet which enables the utilization of justin.tv or other similar services to stream all M games (all NFL, various euro soccer etc.). In HQ picture quality is *nice* and for the price, quite a reasonable option versus your cable company.
