OT - Weis calls his KU team "pile of crap"

Submitted by Brhino on

I know it's a bit OT, but this blog has always had a soft spot for Charlie Weis and his Decided Schematic Advantage.  Even though he's moved on from Notre Dame - Now the head coach at Kansus University following coordinator stints in the NFL and Florida - he's still generating headlines for all the wrong reasons.

The capper came when someone asked about Weis' recruting pitch, given the miserable state of the Jayhawks program. Weis hit on KU's academics, its facilities set-up and the lure of immediate playing time.

He says he puts it this way to the typical high school recruit, referring to players already in the program: "Have you looked at that pile of crap out there? Have you taken a look at that? So if you don't think you can play here, where do you think you can play?

Captain Frontbutt is hardly the first coach to throw a player or section of a team under the bus, but I cannot ever recall a coach blasting his entire team so completely.  It's hard to imagine being a player and giving your all for a coach who has publicly stated such a low opinion of you and your teammates.

He addresses last year's record, and he manages some proper coachspeak there.

"We're 1-11 and picked by everybody to finish last in the league, and that's justifiable. If I were you, I'd pick us in the same spot. We've given you no evidence or no reason to be picked anywhere other than that. I told our players and told our coaching staff that, until they start winning some games in the conference, that's just the way it's going to be."

Humility, honesty, and turning a negative issue into a motivational message to his players and staff.  Well done, really.  And then... what happens?  Did the teleprompter break?  Does he have a psychological condition that prevents him from keeping his foot out of his mouth* for more than 30 seconds at a time?

*NOT a fat joke.  This time.

What is it with KU hiring psychotic and stupid fat *FAT!* (Gundy reference) coaches?

"On dismissing, by Weis' count, 29 players for off-the-field issues since taking over: "I took a team that already wasn't very good and made it worse talent-wise."

As I recall, this is the same Charlie Weis that told the seniors to not bother with practice the week before their game against Oklahoma State as a means to "develop talent for the future". As many know, that's so easy to do without the team leadership there, unless of course you've given up on that as well. Between moves like that and the "pile of crap" comment, I am guessing that this coaching adventure ultimately ends badly. Just a guess.

employing more or less the same rationale? I'd say that's two strikes for Meatloaf. You can demand loyalty from your team when you're disloyal TO your team. That shouldn't be so hard to figure out.

I can only assume that his tenure at Kansas is all part of some elaborate Andy Kaufman-esque performance art joke. Funded by the Notre Dame Athletic Department.

will be looking for another job again in short order. On the other hand, the expectations are so low at Kansas, that he may be able to stick around for longer than he should.

The schematic advantage comes at the buffet table. A lot of planning and preparation h goes into scoring. Opportunities at the crab legs come only so often and are fleeting, hence the importance of proper positioning and technique.
