Freddy Canteen responds to questions (and he knows about MGoBlog)
Freddy Canteen has been responding to questions on his "Ask.fm" page (i.e., a Q&A app that interfaces w/ Twitter). I thought some of these were interesting because he acknowledges hearing about MGoBlog and seems pretty excited about coming to Michigan and the Michigan fan base.
Note: Bold is the question that random people asked him and the plain font is Freddy's response. These are selected q&a's, but the top is the most recent, etc.
yea, mgoblog.com readers are hype on you. think you got the best routes. they named you sleeper of the class; think u gonna get real legit all over the ranking sites and on the field.
What's your GPA
How tall r you
I picture the twitter creeper as Brian in disguise.
"That's great Freddy, I'm glad you like Michigan... but more importantly, may I show you MGoBlog and what it has to offer?"
Peddle that product, Brian. I like the panache.
Nah, I steer clear of the VS threads. It's cool to see the insight, and that they're working for a good cause, but I don't really get the impulse to post in there. I am a huge fan of Michigan football, but I don't really have the urge to break that barrier.
But ask.fm freaks the bejeezus out of me.
Not just you. It obviously conflicts with the blogs "do NOT contact recruits via social media" stance.
And it is annoying as hell.
It also underlines how little I have in common with a wide variety of 17 year old kids from a host of different backgrounds. It's easy to trick yourself into picturing Michigan recruits as adults, but their social media messages definitely stop that. Then I realize it is really creepy that I even know who these kids are.
First step is admitting that you're a creepster!
If I admit it, they may try to take my kids away.
Deny. Deny. Deny. Da'Shawn who?
Everyone who uses is it is a little thirsty, it seems.
Haha, I mean you have to read this in context. Most of these are probably their friends and random kids around their age asking them silly questions, etc.
It's probably actually some middle-aged guy from the UP.
if it wasn't before, than it is now...

Then.
then what?
"How do you balance football and your social life? I'm trying to work on my athletics, but the same night there is a party! I'm going to choose to work on my athletics anyway, but I don't want to miss out on the high school experience. How do you balance these?"
Finally, someone who speaks jive is here to translate.
regardless of how the person who formulated taht question has the verbal skills of a 4th grader, his response bodes very well for his future. THis kid looks like he has a good head on his shoulders and hopefully well see his famed route-running skills on the field soon enough
Why can't people just leave kids alone? These twitter questions read like Mouthbreathers-R-Us.
I read it when I see Michigan mentioned, but otherwise, it's a bit annoying when they choose to have their responses tweeted (I think they can turn that feature off) because it floods my twitter. I mean I like to keep up to date on my sports/recruiting, but I also need to know what's going on in the news and the markets, etc.
Mostly I got dumber from reading those "questions" but I thought the response from Canteen to the question about parties was a good one. It's nice to know he's thinking about his parents and not just the prestige/notoriety of getting a scholarship.
Yea, I think he definitely has perspective and is willing to work hard to make it. He also seems to be excited about going to Michigan and values the fact that he's getting a free ride.
In addition, a 3.9 GPA is excellent.
I'm not so sure about the GPA. You see a lot of these high school athletes with good GPAs due to low standards (or even 5 point scales), then they have standardized test scores well below average. Rivals will often post standardized test scores if the kids make them known. Lets wait for that before proclaiming academic excellence.
I didn't understand the part about the beehive
if you ever need to know "what's up", Canteen will tell you...
$5 to whoever asks him if his favorite all-time SNL skit is "Canteen Boy."
nothing would make me more proud than for a recruit to state that they were reading mgoblog, saw a picture of a rape ewok, and decided to commit on the spot...
that is my dream. I pray for it each and every night...

Well, I'm sure as long as you can back up your constructive criticism (as opposed to flame-baiting), it's just you stating your opinion. But yea, with the new media, they don't need to wait for tomorrow's newspaper to see what ppl think about them. I would assume most players would try to block out the fan chatter (whether it's in the crowds, twitter or mgoblog) and focus on the game and getting better.
IMO, DaShawn Hand is the best player in the history of ever.
I feel the good far outweighs the bad on this blog. And players/recruits have not gotten where they are without criticism. I am sure they have thick skin.
If I were Jake Ryan, I would be pretty pumped about a section of the fan base referring to me as Jake Mother F'in Ryan. And being represented in this light...
For the most part, the kids themselves and the coaches will be harder on these guys than we are.
And for the small group of "fans" who insult players' families or otherwise go off the rails, they should be banned, anyway.
Does anyone get concerned about how many players and recruits visit mgoblog? We're going to have to be so cautious about pissing them off, we won't be able to actually write how we feel (e.g., "He had a terrible game. He needs to go back to the basics and bench.")
That's one of the main reasons that the mods distinguish between legitimate criticism ("he needs to pick up blitzes better") with personal attacks ("he needs to pick up blitzes better I hate his dog"), and remove the latter with ruthless intensity.
Please go back and read some of the stuff that Brian Cook has written about Michigan players that goes way beyond legitimate criticism. The nickname Sherideath was personal and very harsh. It would be great if someone would stand up to Dear Leader with "ruthless intensity". Predictably anyone that calls Brian out for that stuff gets banned from posting.
mgoblog.com readers are hype on youWut
Damn, didn't scroll down far enough before I commented...
I really like the addition of Canteen to this class. Great player, but I think everyone here assumes that any 3* recruit (yes I know some sites have him and others at 4*) is just vastly underrated and warrant an immediate 4*...some won't turn out, some will, hopefully Canteen does though, great kid.
I am hype on him
Why do you assume we are not hype on him?
We are hype on him
Only English?
darn kids and their short-hand texting/tweeting...I can't make any sense out of it.
