Rivals 2014 Class Ranking Potential - Tim Sullivan (Free)

Submitted by CorkyCole on

Thought this was an interesting FREE Rivals article by former mgoblogian Tim Sullivan regarding the 2014 class and its chances for finishing with their #1 class ranking (currently 10th).

I realize ESPN is the only recruiting site everyone cares about these days, but here's the link anyway.

but I think ESPN has shown they've been the outlier and have been right on a few things. I know they weren't as high on Big Will and thought his best position would be OG, lo and behold, that's exactly where the Jets want him after an up-and-down career as a NT.

I thought there were one or two other M recruits they were right on too, but can't remember off the top of my head

ESPN's recruiting news get a lot more press than all the others combined. I'd rather be tops on ESPN than any of the other recruiting sites. The under armor all american game is by far the worst coached PoS of all the high school all american games but it gets the most press, so the best players want to go there. Right or wrong ESPN is considered "the big fish".

This is exactly the kind of article that makes me keep my Rivals subscription. I love the fact that the editors favor long word counts in getting out an already rich story. What's really great is they use writers who can rephrase the same sentence idea into a string of multiple sentences. It's amazing how many ways there are in the English language to say the same thing but make it sound different. On the one hand, a concept can be communicated this way, or, on the other hand, you can deliver it another way. It's important to reiterate at every opportunity your main point.

I don't think the Rivals Michigan site has any "insiders" left at this point. Sullivan never breaks any news (it was odd they hired him to be their insider guy after Helmholdt left). 247 is much better.

I've been thinking lately that ranking recruiting classes doesn't make as much sense as grading recruiting classes.  Every team has its own unique set of positional needs, depth concerns, style/transition issues, scholarship numbers, academic standards, etc.  Anyone can design a point system and announce, in a vacuum, that X group of players is better than Y group of players.  But if the Y group fits a team's requirements better, then that's the class you want.

Landing Hand or McDowell, and one of the plan A safety prospects (Smith or Nicholson) would make this class a solid A.  Landing all three, or maybe getting two plus another sublime national talent like Fournette, would make it an A+.  If that class winds up "only" finishing in the upper half of the top 10 nationally, oh well.

Class ranking, to a certain degree, is overrated. Michigan is an elite program and the guys who are commiting are obviously good enough to play and/or start for the Wolverines. As long as the coaches address the needs of team, I have faith in them.
