First, he likely isn't alone and is most likely with family/friends. As nice as it may seem, it is likely that he is planning on covering the bill and it is unnecessary/rude to do so on his behalf. I would think seeing what he is drinking and sending him a drink/or buying him a piece of cheesecake would however be appropriate.
