It said that the coaches were waiting to offer him (Tranquill) because a kid they had previously offered might commit soon.
Dwight Williams, I believe. Coaches apparently told Tranquill if Williams goes elsewhere he'll get an offer.
Yes he is.
Tranquill doesn't seem to be deciding until late July anyway, so that would seem to rule him out.
Minnesota and Purdue want this three-star SO BAD.

You know, to the downvoters: that was a legitimate comment. If his offer holds true, with Watson's committment, this could be his last chance to commit, if he's worried about another DB taking his place. So...in the same manner as O-Linemen dropping earlier than they expected because their potential places started filling up: maybe it's Westphal.
I find myself complaining about this a lot these days. That -1 button is like an anonymous driveby. The problem is that most people don't know how to use it. They neg someone for an opinion or suggestion they don't agree with. This is a "forum", so if you have a counterpoint, put it out there. Negging someone does not help create a discussion. If the goal of a forum is to create a meaningful discussion on a topic, the +/- feature is its enemy. Instead of requiring a solid rebuttal, all you have to do is hit -1. There's no dialogue. Too many people on here don't realize that the -1 should only be used if someone is not trying to add anything to the discussion.

This coming from the guy who asserted that Michigan fired Richrod because "he was a Mexican" and followed that up with "suck a fatty" which I personally haven't heard since high school
People hit upvotes and negs for all sorts of reasons. I probably only vote on two or three of a hundred posts (sometimes a lot less than that) and they probably run 10-1 for positive votes. The advantage of not having to always explain a vote (whether positive or negative) is it helps keep the discussion going rather than getting bogged down with a back and forth on tangential details. I don't neg posts that make a point I disagree with; I just respond with my disagreement. By far the most common reason that I neg posts is because of a snarky tone, a comment that is likely to derail the discussion because someone else will then respond in kind. Negging and not commenting does a better job of defusing a possible flame war than commenting would. Besides, there's a pretty simple solution if you think someone has been unfairly negged (and I do this quite frequently too), just upvote the post.
It's not a perfect system, and I'm sure some posters on occasion abuse it, but by and large it seems to work fairly well.
The -1 drive by's have been getting so bad that I had to change my settings so that I could actually see some posts. Some threads were getting like 50% grayed-out posts because everybody was -1ing everything that moved.
I agree, Belisarius. The first name that popped into my mind was Westphal too. Like you said, maybe he saw the seats on the bus were starting to fill up quickly.
I have no idea why someone would have negged you for that comment, however it looks like you're now back up to 5 anyway.
Some people may disagree but i found something early in the process very telling to me at least...or maybe i read too much into it...After a Westphal visit he said something along the lines of "The coaches want to take time to evaluate 2014 kids and not rush anyone into a verbal" and in the way he said it i took it as he liked UM but the coaches wanted him to take his time.
Not more than a week later Michael Ferns dropped for UM..And ever since i have felt there is something off about the Westphal/UM situation...It could be alot of things including him just simply not being ready..Just my opinion but i feel there is more to it
The coaches say that to virtually every kid. They don't like having kids rush into things, because then they might end up de-committing, wanting to visit elsewhere, etc. Westphal may have said that, but so have a ton of guys who are committed.
Agreed..I felt like Westphal was strongly considering making a verbal at the time but maybe the coaches were waiting on the "elite" options to decide first.

Does'nt that seem awful weird his response is "He's committing here soon!" to another kid getting his spot. He doesn't sound too upset. No?
Also, committing "here"? Sounds like Tranquill is saying they'll both be part of Michigan's class. Could just be strange wording and I'm reading too much into it (in recruiting? that never happens), but I found it odd nonetheless
that Michigan wouldn't offer if the other guy commits, so the point is moot.
Interesting thought, and one that doesn't necessarily apply here, but it may... Would it make sense for our coaches to recruit hard up until this point, then start offering backup plans now to fill the class. Before you neg me, two things. One, I don't claim that Tranquill is a backup plan, just that he may be. Two, if the coaches set fall camp as their deadline for aggressively recruiting 2014 kids, save for guys like Smith and Hand, and they fill up the roster with a few sleepers, they get another head start on aggressively hitting the 2015 class. It's sort of the Texas philosophy, sans the talent rich state. If they artificially give themselves an early deadline to wrap up 2014, they get a huge head start on 2015. (Sorry for the single paragraph, but until Brian and IE10 fix their lovers quarrel, I'm unable to use the enter button on this PC. IE10 didn't stop me from typing that massive run-on sentence though, that was all me.)

Hell shouldn't break loose for suggesting this, unless you purport to know this as a truth. Speculation never hurt anyone, and the strategy described above could be a very valid one. A lot of people on here pass themselves as passionately critical thinkers, but will disregard anything that isn't the status quo. It's a pretty interesting phenomenon. This site would lose all credibility if everyone around here just goes around agreeing with each other. It'd be a giant circle jerk with pictures of cats and GIFs of Kate Upton.
Apparently I underestimated the percentage of members on this site that enjoy jerking off to pictures of cats and GIFs of Kate Upton. A rookie mistake for someone who has been here so long. I know that this is what struck a chord, as the rest of my post was perfectly valid.
I'm not sure if it is a backup plan so much as putting a big emphasis on SMSB and other camps. Assuming it is Tranquill, all three of our commits this weekend are folks whose stock rose coming out of SMSB. Stribling last year recieved his offer after attending a Michigan camp. Tranquill had a good camp and supposedly also drew some ND interest.
It is getting the word that the Michigan staff is willing to shift their priority and offers up based on camp performances. It's good for us because it ensures a steady crop of "sleepers" will be eager to come to our camps and hope for an offer. I say "sleepers", because Stribling aside, most of our diamonds in the rough are 3*s who camp and just end up looking like 4 * to 4.5* star players so they draw an offer. Also might help nudge some of those other guys into committing before they get displaced by a camp performance.
I agree with you that both commits from today look like serious players. My suggestion is not about settling for marginal players, more so about setting a self imposed timeline for recruiting 2014, so that you stay a step ahead of the competition. Coaching staffs are worked very hard, and they have 24 hours per day just like the rest of us. It would make sense for some coaches to try to get out to an early start each year, and this would be the method to do so.
I think if they make it a real deadline, they would risk cutting off people who are just taking their time. What it could be in a way is a polite way of telling some people to "shit or get off the pot". So, if some people are waiting to commit because they know we are saving the spot, and they probably will end up here at some point, but are waiting for one reason or another, it's kind of a shot across the bow, letting people know that we will give the spot to someone else/recruit other people at the position until it's really truly full. It's also a way of not leaving ourselves in the lurch; The Policy, such as it is, is a way of ensuring that we don't have someone commit and keep checking other places out and then switch at the last minute and leave us scrambling. It could be a similar strategy to that.
This will all be self-solving in a few years. Recruits are beginning to realize that the recruiting cycle has moved 6 months earlier, and waiting until January to do the hat dance is a thing of the past.
You will still have a few 5* that can get away with it, but it will be less and less each year. The big loser is the All Star games who get their panache from the surprise announcements in January.
This would make a interesting "Mathlete" type chart, if the data is even avilable . . . percentage of recruits that commit in the Summer vs. Fall vs. Winter/NSD, by Star-category.
I would bet that the chart would show that the commit dates are moving earlier and earlier for all categories, and especially for non-5 Stars.

By definition, Tranquill is a backup plan. The coaches basically told him that they want another guy more, but if they miss out, they'll offer Tranquill.
It's okay to say the truth. Be brave. People who neg you or get mad at you for it are just being idiots.

We've seen elsewhere that if Michigan wants a guy, they'll go ahead and offer him, regardless of what other offers are out there.
