Drake Harris will NOT be at The Opening this weeked.

Submitted by no joke its hoke on

Drake has classes he has to take this week so he can enroll early at Michigan. Tough news for the kid but shows he has a bigger goal in mind.

Bummer. I was looking forward to him going up against better competition. This will probably hurt his rankings as well. There will now be a "not good enough evaluation against better talent" argument when ranking him.

but taking classes so he can enroll erly at Michigan? Yes please. He's not suddenly going to become better by going to a single camp, but being on campus for a whole semester & summer session before his freshman year sure will.

has to carry the torch. I believe he'll be the only commit at the event. Not sure exactly how many we had last year, but I believe Ohio has 8 commits going.

2nd that.  Maybe the recruiting process forces some of these kids to mature beyond their years, but if I was a 17-year-old and had a chance to fly to Oregon, participate in Nike's high-profile summer camp, and be on ESPN...  I can't see myself turning that down to take summer classes.  It's unfortunate for him, but it's a testament to his character that Drake would choose the less-celebrated path.

This just in from Jeremy Birmingham at 11wariors: a source close to Urban Meyer who knows a reporter from the Columbus Dispatch who once sat next to Jeremy at a football media luncheon in 2009 winked in his general direction, indicating that Meyer decided Harris was not the right fit at OSU since he put his school ahead of a summer football camp.

I absolutely love camps, and I think The Opening shows who some of the great competitors are; However, is Drake Harris slips at all in rankings/ people think less of him as a prospect because of camps, they will lose a ton of credibility in my eyes... His film (of actual games) is unreal. It would be nice to have a bunch of a Michigan guys there for the exposure, but I'm happier Drake will be in AA in January.

You have to admire the commitment and drive on Harris' part, but it helps when you have a coaching staff that creates the culture that ours does. He is foregoing an event which could raise his football stock potentially so he can work towards making sure he will be able to get to Michigan as soon as he is able shows maturity, but also the excitement that Hoke and this staff instill in the kids that they recruit. It is great to see someone not only commit to Michigan, but do the extra things to make it happen. As someone said, it's evidence of an excellent work ethic as well.

Drake knows he will be able compete for time next year faster by being an EE. I'm excited about the extra time he will get in a college weightroom. Has a chance to be in the top four rotation with a strong Spring and Fall.

If getting him on campus, into a college weight room and into the playbook a semester early means he has to skip a camp, there shouldn't be any hesitation on his part. Going or not going to The Opening doesn't change the fact that he's a top talent, and that he's already committed to a top school and a solid recruiting class.

is skipping a big time football camp to work on finishing classes so he can start college a semester early. But no, State fans are right. He's a total douche.

Keep up the hard work, kid! Can't wait to see him here.

Playing devils advoacte here, is this something Hoke would be a proponent for and encouraging him to do this?  I'm not big at all on recruiting but I've heard/read numerous times how Hoke thinks the EE process is a bit overrated (maybe not the right word, but).  I have no opinion either way, though this does sound like a very mature decision and kid who has his eyes set on big things.  Again I'm just curious to whether this is something Hoke is encouraging or would some opine that Hoke would rather see a kid do the normal Summer camps and activites a normal kid would do before Sr. season and just come in the summer before (versus January).  Hoke very well may have no "say" in the decision and is just happy to have this student athelete, whenever he can get him.

(I've only mentioned Hoke but I'd let that equate to Hoke and the other coaches who've recruited him and will coach him)

but I'd argue that Hoke would be (or is) very supportive of this decision.  Not because EE vs. football camps, but because Mr. Harris is putting his schoolwork first.  Any time one turns down a fun free ride to take care of responsibilities (even self-chosen ones like this one), I think Hoke smiles.

Staying to complete classes for EE is a huge deal...basically saying "I made my commitment and I'm applying myself to that goal and commitment. I don't need to boost my stock, I'm already invested" it only bodes well for his dedication. UM is his focus not his "stock" regardless of how Hoke views EE...not to slight Hoke either, just saying the kid has priorities and UM seems to be just it.

Needs to get the 40 time lower before the scouts see him again.

Consecutive slow 40's at camps will drop him regardless of how well he plays.

But he has his scholarship to play at UofM. I don't think he is worried about trying to impress some scouts. The only negative would be in influencing other players to commit. Not a big concern. Good for him
