B1G to add Armed Forces Bowl to lineup
Complete change for the bowl lineups. So far we have this-

Rose | Pasadena, CA | Rose Bowl | 1901 |
Capital One | Orlando, FL | Citrus Bowl | 1946 |
Outback | Tampa, FL | Raymond James Stadium | 1986 |
Holiday | San Diego, CA | Qualcomm Stadium | 1978 |
Pinstripe | Bronx, NY | Yankee Stadium (II) | 2010 |
Fight Hunger | Santa Clara, CA | Levi's Stadium | 2002 |
Music City | Nashville, TN | LP Field | 1998 |
Armed Forces | Fort Worth | Amon G. Carter Stadium | 2003 |
Detroit Bowl | Detroit, MI | Ford Field | New |
Should have known it in 2010.
Michigan had no business being in the Gator Bowl against an SEC team. Not with that coaching staff.
On the flip side, I think that bowl result was part of what got RR fired, and that was, I think the best possible outcome.
I think the Josh Groban meltdown was the final straw.
was done on purpose to force Brandon's hand. Brandon didn't flinch.
I dont know about everyone else but nothing screams "RichRod coaching debate" quite like the announcement of the B1G new potential minor bowl tie-in's.
Although whenever there's a soccer thread I immediately think of RichRod coaching debate.
nah man, I automatically think of a Rich Rod debate whenever I am doing an active site structure determination using central sphere predictions.
The bowl alignment is a direct result of the RichRod years; if we could have been winners we wouldn't be ducking the SEC...
flame away.

It's nice that MSU will get to play in a California bowl game too. Maybe they could even drive to Pasadena on their activity day
If I am not mistaken, the other tie-in for the Armed Forces Bowl is the Mountain West, which sends the #3 team in the conference to this bowl. I wonder how they'll match this up for the Big Ten. I thought that the projected alignment in the new playoff system for the MWC was the Las Vegas Bowl followed by the Poinsettia (beginning in 2014 - based on an SI article from last month), so I am curious as to whether this moves down the MWC selection order now.
other boards I've read is that this will be an AAC (Big East) conference Bowl beginning in 2014. The AAC will have two teams in Texas (plus Tulsa, fairly nearby), whereas the MWC will have no teams in Texas.
All that said, I'd like to get a B1G vs. MWC match-up in a lower bowl game. B1G teams rarely face-off with the MWC and the MWC --- even now minus BYU, TCU and Utah --- still produces some pretty good teams.
Last I checked, there's only 1 Bowl game of ANY type in the B1G footprint. Not many B1G teams will be going to the post-season if we applied the "logic you're accusing me of."
Anyway, ANY minor bowl will want a power conference team if they can get it. Even if they only get the 6-6 and 7-5 type teams, I'd argue it's a "win" for the Bowl.
For example, I was at the Heart of Dallas (TicketCity) Bowl on 1-January-2012 when Penn State played Houston. E.g., exactly the type of match-up the Armed Forces Bowl would get in this deal.
Attendance was not great (46,817) for that Bowl game --- but that number was over 4000 higher than ANY Armed Forces Bowl has ever drawn in its 10-year history. I think the Armed Forces Bowl is a decent fit for both the B1G, AAC and the Bowl game itself.
It just sounds like one big pile of fail.
What happened to the "we need fewer bowls" mentality that seems to occur each year right after bowl season is concluded?
