I saw this posted over at MaizenBrew and I just can't stop watching it. Hoping it gets me through the next couple months. Definitely worth your time to take a look.

That hit will get more played out amongst UM fans than the Clowney hit will with South Carolina fans and that's OK.  OSU fans will have to see this over and over for the next 20 years.

Plays like the Brandon Graham play against MSU (obvious missed block on the backside) and this play (obvious mistake by Miller not even starting his throwing motion by the time the ball should already be in the air) are talked up by Michigan fans. But the Clowney hit on Smith is somehow twisted into "it was just a missed block by the TE/LT combo, plus Smith is the smallest guy ever."

Yeah, I'm annoyed by seeing the Clowney hit too. But if it happened to any other team I'd never get tired of seeing it because he did rock him. Just like Graham did to the MSU back. Just like Clark did to Miller above. I just think it's hypocritical of fans who try to twist and justify one while pumping the other, instead of just admitting they are sick of seeing it for obvious reasons (note, this didn't necessarily happen above, but more often than not it happens when the Smith hit gets any attention).

At the end of the day, the fact is that the vast majority of big plays are due in part by someone making a significant mistake. Very few great plays are based purely on someone's own athletic feats.

You're absolutely spot on, thanks for posting this.  Honestly, hating on the clowney hit makes us look ridiculous and makes the whole situation worse (when talking to opposing fans).  Just let it be.  Great hit, move on.  It pisses me off more that we lost both the OSU and South Carolina game.  Those teams were very beatable... but par for the season, the ball didn't bounce Michigan's way.

I absolutely LOVE the Clowney hit. I love that he gets one good play play throughout a game where he is otherwise owned by Lewan. Nothing will remind me of this more than seeing that highlight played over what I'm sure will be many years to come. I just shake my head and laugh, one good hit, woopdiedoo.

No doubt that Lewan probably did better than anyone else against Clowney all year, but he didn't dominate him. The fact was that Lewan played him very evenly, and besides this play, marginalized much Clowney's impact compared to many other games he played in. But Clowney still got a fair amount of push on pass downs and still held his own against the run. In fact, if it was Lewan that came into that game extremely hyped and Clowney who had good hype but not spectacular (a la Lewan), you would hear a lot of people saying how Clowney did really well against Lewan. Clowney still had a day, and still required focus and game planning around and still made an impact on the game outside of this play, Lewan didn't take  all that away. But Lewan did make Clowney as un-Clowney-like as he had been all year. I think that speaks more to Lewan's real and very good ability than Michigan fans claiming something that is a bit of a reach.

only thing that irritates me about the Clowney hit is that it resulted in nearly everybody thinking and saying that S. Carolina owned Michigan becasue Clowney owned Smith on that play.  Because that hit is all that is every shown it is just another case of the SEC owning Michigan and the Big Ten when in reality that was a great game between two evently matched teams.

And Michigan had just as much of a chance to win at the end as South Carolina did. Both teams could point to things depending on the outcome (the first down that never was, some easily fixable defensive coverage busts) and that game could have gone either way. Michigan just didn't seem to get the bounces last year at the end of the day (well, except in the NW game)

EDIT: And just to be clear, I wasn't saying Clowney beat Lewan during the game. I'm saying it was a very good battle in which neither player dominated. That's why it was a battle of early first round draft picks, because both held their own against the other. I see it's being taken the wrong way, but I wasn't implying Lewan got beat most of the day.

You're spot on. I can't tell you how many people think Clowney dominated the entire game, which was only enhanced by giving him the player of the game. It's not about what happened, that hit gives people the perception that the SEC just had another dominating performance over the Big Ten even though it took a Hail Mary to win. It makes sense that South Carolina fans would like that hit, but as a Michigan and Big Ten fan, it's annoying.

One is how Vince took it like a champ.  I mean he got got de-cleated, his helmet popped off, etc. and by one of the larger size mis-matches you'll find on a football field (6'6" 260 vs 5'6" 175).  He was giving up almost a foot in height and 100 pounds in weight.  And he got up like nothing ever happened and didn't think twice about it.  He is one tough guy.  The second thing I like about it is it reminds me of how happy I will be when we get guys like Kalis, Dawson, Kugler, Bosch, etc. blocking back there and a guy like Green running behind them.

without even using Clowney's name, I got a self-righteous response. This is a blog. It is a Michigan blog. Are you really surprised to find homerism here, or you just here to show us how insightful and non-biased you are as a writer. Hey, nice sig line, btw!

Especially seeing as I was in no way claiming you did that. Apparently you did not read my post, because I actually even said that it didn't happen above my post, but that must have been difficult to find what with me saying "this didn't necessarily happen above". But I guess I'm not allowed to be annoyed to always read the spin that typically comes along with that clip that I find hypocritical.

And by the way, just because you're a fan doesn't mean you have to have blind homerism. And it's not that I'm surprised to find it on a Michigan blog, you find homerism on any fan blog. I even said, in my homer opinion, that I find the constant showing of that clip annoying, I just think fans should be honest about why it's annoying rather than trying to spin it. By the way, your post never indicated you were trying to spin it, which is why I wasn't responding to it, because it in no way implied you were trying to, only that you were annoyed with it.

I like how you're insinuating that because I have a blog (my sig line doesn't even go to it though) I'm trying to be impartial to get clicks or something, or maybe you're implying that I'm not really a Michigan fan. That post had nothing to do with my blog. Apparently I'm not allowed to even put a blog post that I wrote in my sig line without it implying that "I'M IMPARTIAL, LISTEN TO ME!" It doesn't even matter that the post was in no way an opinion post where being impartial would even matter. Whatever, if you want to take something that wasn't even about you way too personally, and somehow make it about you (notice how I didn't respond to your post) and then try to bash me back for being impartial, along with the others that apparently agree with me, alright, go for it, but I find your response to my post that wasn't about you pretty self-righteous in its own right.

Oooh, a disclaimer. My apologies.

I am not bothered by the hit, it's football.

I'm not bothered by fan sites that treat it like Oooh, Branch.

I'm not all that bothered by the media repeatedly playing it on every video screen capable of showing it.

I am bothered by media types making Clowney out to be the best football player that ever lived, go tell it to them.

I even listened to your yelling. I don't care. Color me self-righteous if it makes you feel better.

I never said that hit made Clowney the best player that ever lived. And in the comments below it I said Lewan neutralized Clowney well, he just didn't dominate him. I love watching the Branch hit, and the Taylor hit against Penn St, and the Graham hit, and that hit above with Miller getting hit. I have no problem with people loving to see their team hit people hard, as you said, it's football. I was just saying I wished fans didn't try to spin it into "it's nothing". It was a big hit by Clowney. Clowney is a good player that made a good play there on a day in which he did much worse than usual but wasn't dominated. Why you took offense to all that is beyond me. Why your responses to me have made little sense as responses I do find odd.  That's fine. You can direct your anger at me because your bothered by how the media treats Clowney if it makes you feel better.

Perish the thought. I did probably get a bit too personal, and I do apologize for that. I'm not mad at you, I don't know you. I have nothing against space coyotes, although I have had issues with their earth-dwelling brethren.

I did essentially what you did, but I picked one of the things that I find funny. I was voicing my opinion of people who come on without provocation and begin lecturing us on the hypocrisy of some unnamed fan(s). I didn't take offense, I just stated my opinion. I really don't care what your feelings are about the hit, and I would never question your fandom. I am grateful that Smith didn't hurt Clowney when he hit him. About the only thing I take issue with is Lewan vs. Clowney. Lewan can't block Clowney and then go score a touchdown or tackle a linebacker. If the player touted by many as the best defensive player in the country is neutralized, essentially neutralized or even neutralized well, that amounts to domination by the offensive player, in my opinion of course. You are certainly entitled to your own opinion.

TD against OSU comes to mind.  He also had a run earlier in the season where he made a cut that is just not seen to often on the football field.  Those would have fit in nicely.

IMO most pump-up videos are way too fucking long, and this is one of those videos.

No soup for you!

PapabearBlue

Well since it's just a highlight video of total randomness and none of the scenes really link or even last more than a few seconds the best part is that people that like long videos can enjoy it and people that dont can pause, skip around, or even shut off the video with virtually zero negative consequences... minus the second or two of extra thought required to make those decisions.

I think I embedded it at the right time... if not, the 22 sec mark starts the play. Not ridiculous (certainly not for him) but I remember being in the South Endzone watching this play develop and laughing at #5 for Iowa having no chance.

Edit: or I don't know how to embed so here is the link. https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=KoMEQBzUJEc#t=22s

Here is the "Old" embed code with my changes inserted.

<object width="420" height="315"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/KoMEQBzUJEc?hl=en_US&start=22&amp;version=3&am…"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/KoMEQBzUJEc?hl=en_US&start=22&amp;version=3&am…" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="420" height="315" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true"></embed></object>

I added &start=22 into the code provided by YouTube. Obviously, the 22 will be changed for your own circumstance. It does not have to go exactly where I placed it, but I know it works from there and I am a creature of habit.

Anyone and everyone who does not respect that hit is dilusional and a homer. It was a great hit by a great player. Just like anyone and everyone who does not respect the hell out of Smith for getting right back up is a hater.

With that said, I will never understand how Ace Sanders didn't win the MVP for that game. He DID dominate us whereas Clowney was handled the entire game (with the exception of the hit, obviously). That still bothers me even as a Michigan fan. Ace deserved it.

Edit: this was supposed to be a reply to the part where people were discussing the downplay of the hut by some Michigan fans... Sorry I did this on an iPad.
