Cornwell to Bama

Submitted by Webber's Pimp on

Just to be clear, this is the same David Cornwell that our staff passed over for Speight?

For the record, I'm happy with Speight. Borges got his man and he personally evaluated both QB's. I have to admit though I was surprised to read ESPN had Cornwell ranked as its #1 pocket passer in the class.

Not sure about the passed over comment. Not wasting time on kids from distant lands, who are showing questionable interest, is not a bad thing. (Not saying that was the case here. I don't know).

I will say I am very happy with the QB chart.....

My point was that Michigan does not need to waste time and resources in middle of nowhere Oklahoma on a QB they were not convinced wanted to become a Michigan man. It seems they were not sold on him, nor he on them. The fact that he is now going to Alabama does not change those facts. Michgan has no reason to suffer QB envy over a high school kid.

Current QB depth envy is an entirely different subject....

I'll add--this is right.

It's a misnomer that double negatives are always incorrect. Sometimes they express the statement clearer and more powerfully than eliminating all negatives.

Fun useless fact to seal my fate on sports message board: Jane Austin used them liberally.

The day Speight committed, Cornwell tweeted that he had learned not to get caught up in the recruiting process, and to commit when he found a staff and school he liked.

I think Michigan, the day before Speight committed, asked Cornwell to commit, and he said he wasn't ready.  So Michigan went to option #2.

You don't have to be a detective to figure this one out.  Cornwell appears to be the better prospect, and we know Michigan had been pursuing him.  But this staff's QB policy is not to offer until the kid is ready to accept.  So when Cornwell said he wasn't ready to commit, we offered Speight, who jumped on it.

That was how they handled this class, where there isn't a whole ton of huge prospects. We've already floated and offer out to Josh Rosen for the next class, and people expect to see more out to some of the highly touted QB's in that next class.

Here is my take on the QB position this year: Hoke loves Morris, but knows he needs time to develop. He didn't want to bring in a lot of competition early that might interfere with his development. Enter Speight, a talented QB, but someone who I don't see passing Morris on the depth chart. If Cornwell was in this class we would already be talking Morris vs. Cornwell. Speight is perfect for his role and what we needed from a qb in this class.

At least I hope Hoke wouldn't set his sights on a less talented player for the benefit of an upperclassman.  If you decide to use a scholarship, you should find the best player for that position.  If he happens to out-compete the kid you brought in last year, then that's a good problem to have.  Reminds me of how Joe Paterno seemed to let his apparent loyalty to Anthony Morelli keep Daryll Clark as a backup when many thought that was a mistake.

In addition to Alabama, Cornwell had offers from Arkansas, Auburn, Indiana, Kansas, Miami (FL), Missouri, Notre Dame, Oklahoma State, Oregon State, Tennessee, Tulsa, Virginia Tech and Washington State - this is per Rivals. A wide and varied slate of offers indeed.

In his junior year, he was 191 for 338 on passes, good for a 57% completion percentage. He passed for 2,742 and 27 TDs, and rushed for 755 yards and 6 TDs on 128 carries.

I kind of wonder what, if any, effect Cornwell's offer sheet had on UM's decision to offer Speight instead.  It was widely-reported that Borges wanted whichever QB he picked to commit immediately (though the reason for that was never made clear).  Cornwell, given the options available to him, might have been less likely to do that--which may have tipped the scale to Speight.

Cornwall's ability to run made me want him the most. All things being equal, give me the guy that can make things happen with his legs as well as his arm. Not that Speight won't be good but I fear a return to the statues at QB. They say Speight can move a little in the pocket but the margin for error goes way down when I guy isn't nimble enough to evade the rush and buy a few more seconds.

Remember when Guitterez was the heir apparent?  Word coming out of camp is what you have to listen to.  It was pretty obvious Carr was going to have to make a rough decision regardless of injury to Matt or not. When players are being asked for comparisons and say things such as, "Matt is good......don't get me wrong........there are just some things that Chad can do that the others can't...........he can make all the passes, etc.," the writing is pretty much on the wall. They were saying the same things about trying to tackle Breaston his freshman year while RSing. Damn, it would have been nice to have an OC who understood a little about spreading people about then, just for a change of pace.    ^And if Speight does prove to be the qb, remember who the record setter is, and he seemed to have his feet planted in concrete at times. Also, there's a gentleman LC almost lost due to his love affair for Drew that turned out to be pretty damn good but probably can't crack 5.3 in the forty. If people have pocket awareness, they'll be fine with the prospects these guys will be coaching up for the foreseeable future.

Aren't asked to do too much. Hand off, occasionally pass, and don't turn the ball over. Bama's success lies much in its Defense. Plus they've had some dynamic runners lately. The only top end WR I can think of off the top of my head is Julio Jones.

While I agree that much of Bama's success should be attributed to defense and its running backs, I don't think McCarron gets as much credit as he deserves. Before the 2012 BCS game, I thought he was just a game manager. But he's really proven himself this past year.

Just my opinion.

Ummm, yeah, I don't think so. Shane gonna struggle for awhile. Speight actually looks like Luck, and probably more the prototype they seek long term. So there will be a health competition to say the least...
