"I'm sure both TTUN and VTECH hinted to Da'Shawn Hand that he'll start if he commits there. Urbz obviously won't do that and he's not considering us." That actually may be one of the most deluded comments yet that I have seen from an OSU fan. That is literally the opposite of what we know about Urban and Hoke. Meyer was renowned for promising playing time to recruits at Florida and Hoke is known to tell everyone, including guys like Peppers that they are gonna have to earn it.

Yep, Jabrill Peppers - the kid whose goal is to be the second primarily-defensive player to ever win the Heisman *as a freshman* - is worried that he just wouldn't get playing time outside the cozy confines of the Glick fieldhouse.  He's just lacking a bit of confidence, and Urbz don't have time for that shit.

After some research, there is a belief among Ohio fans and insiders, that on Hand's first visit to Ohio, he in fact said Urban was too intense. So when Hand says everyone knows that his first Ohio visit didn't go well, that was what he is talking about. I found this pretty hard to believe, so I also checked out Virginia Tech boards, and they find it equally ridiculous. One particular moderator on their scout board said that Hand was extremely competitive and his calm demeanor flips once pads and helmets are on. This does sound like someone who would avoid intense coaches. As I posted earlier, this is typical Bucknuts like spin, that is about as believable as the tooth fairy, Easter bunny, and strippers with a heart of gold. Carry on, nothing to see here.

Maybe by "too intense" Hand meant that Meyer was laying the recruiting pressure and spin on too thick and it has nothing to do with being competitive on the field. I get the impression that Hand would appreciate intense teachers, but not intense salesmen.

that Hand is a pretty quiet guy who's difficult to get a lot of info out of. I got the impression that he's not all that active in social media and doesn't spend much time talking about recruiting. If that's the case, I could easily see how a hard-sell approach might turn him off.

I think Hoke has hit upon the tactic of brutally honest recruting at just the right time here.  In the past, brutally honest recruiting hurt you, because other coaches just lied to kids and snowballed them with promises of grandeur, and that definitely worked on some kids,  Before the popularity of social media, kids in a recruting class didn't really talk to each other, so they weren't sharing this stuff with each other (ot at least not much) and they couldn't put it together that at some programs the coaches were clearly makinig promises that couldn't be kept.

In today's world, where kids being recruited are constantly in communication, being brutally honest with them is suddenly not a bad thing, but a critical one.  No longer are you scaring them away by telling them "we won't promise you any playing time".  No, now when they check in with everyone else being recruited and find out that everyone is getting the same story they realize the coaching staff is on the up-and-up.  You win your spot on the field through hard work and being the best guy in practice.  And you know that once you are on the team, the coaching staff isn't promising YOUR spot on the field to some highly rated recruit just to get him to sign.

I really think lying to recruits probably used to work better, but in today's connected world, I think Hoke's completely open & honest style with no promises or guarantees for any recruit, no matter how good you might be, has really struck a chord with recruits.

To be fair, I'm sure this is just a continuation of the way Michigan has recruited for a long time under a lot of coaches, but Hoke seems to be even more adamant about it than others have been.

From the article:

"But my favorite coaching staff is Michigan," Hand said. "With Michigan, what you see if what you get. It's professional. With some, you feel like when you get to college it might, change, but with Michigan, everyone says they're straight.

I am reminded of Jason Whitlock's article back on Feb 6 of 2011, just as Hoke was hired:

He [Hoke] has an uncanny ability to get kids to believe in him and believe in themselves. He doesn’t do it with smooth words. He’s not smooth. He does it by being the same genuine person day after day

And:

He connects. The kids hang on his words, respond to his tough love and accept his discipline.

When I read Whitlock's article way back then I was hopeful but guarded in my optimism.  Since then there's not been a thing I've seen that makes me question the sincerity or integrity of Coach Hoke.  Not a thing.

The testimonies of recruits confirming Hoke's genuine nature are stacking.  The word is out.  We won't always get the recruit ... but we'll be in the hunt for them.

If you remember that moment in the spring game when they were changing the scrimmage over and Devin came running and jumping over talking a little smack to Hoke. You see that he had a huge smile and laughed. You can tell that there is a great relationship with his players and it is genuine. I was so appreciative and impressed that he is our coach. He is making a huge difference on and off the field. It is palatable.

Hoke's finest moment at UM thus far IMO.

Huge play in the game against UM's fiercest rival and a game you know Hoke was absolutely dying to win. That play could have cost UM the game but Hoke didn't explode and jump in Hags face like about 90% of football coaches in the game today would have done. I was never more sure that Hoke was the right fit for UM than I was at that moment.

... Is that as far as he is able, we seem to be recruiting high-character young men and being straightforward with them about the situation. Recruiting is inherently a little sleazy as both sides try to sell themselves to each other, but as much as possible we seem to be keeping it classy. I hope we can succeed taking the high road, but I am glad we're taking it either way.

If my wife would let me, I'd subscribe to bucknuts 247, because you know all the VIP posts on there are where they are hiding the crazy/psychotic posters we all know and love. I could entertain MGoBlog for days for just 8 dollars a month; but apparently the Wife would rather have the 8 dollars. Pffft, stupid joint account and stupid chase updates to her phone.

Just do it. If your wife is going to get pissed over 8 dollars, you've got bigger problems than the fight that'll cause anyway.

Full disclosure: when we first got the joint account, I withdrew a bunch of cash from an ATM in a strip club just to annoy my wife. It was just as funny as I'd anticipated. To this day, making ridiculous (but small) purchases from the joint account is one of my favorite things to do.

Maybe Hand like Marshall was given the full court press by Urban, basically telling him we have a spot for you now, but if you don't commit we won't hold it for you.  Marshall committed to ohio, but then backed out.  Maybe Hand didn't like being given what is essentially an ultimatum.

Now what does that sound like...

"Real recognize real," Peppers said matter-of-factly. "That's the shortest and sweetest way you can say it. Real recognize real."

I like how that worked out for us last time.

Meh, they've just for their panties in a bundle because they can't stand that a program they all think is below them has beaten them out for the #2 recruit in America, and has a great shot of landing the #1 guy, too. They can't stand that Hoke is coveting with, and in some cases, beating out Meyer.

Business Time

Everyone keeps bringing that up but no one seems to mention how insanely lucky Meyer was when the whole JoePa/Sandusky thing broke and OSU became the de facto landing spot for all the PSU elite recruits (in particular, Armani Reeves, Camren Williams, and Noah Spence). Without that, I think Meyer was on track to finish behind Hoke.

I'm not saying that Meyer isn't a great recruiter, but it just irritates me that everyone (especially OSU fans) act like it was some legendary recruiting ability that let their 2012 class overtake ours at the eleventh hour, rather than a historic implosion of PSU's class.

How do you define outrecruited? Are you a star gazer?

Recruiting rankings mean nothing. Proceed with caution. These are the same rankings that told me Kevin Grady was going to be the all-time leading rusher in Michigan history. And that Cullen Christian and Demar Dorsey would be part of the tandem here called No Fly Zone.

The only ones these sites are even consistent with are top-10 ranked players. Stars are pretty to look at and get the fans going, but the coaches know what they are doing.

You successfully mentioned three of our biggest failures when it comes to "highly ranked" recruits.

Stars matter.  Yes, some highly ranked kids flop.  Yes, we have had a few of those kids.  But at the end of the day, the % of five stars that make it to the NFL is much, much higher than three stars.

All that being said, no one in their right mind can say "URBZ GOT THE BETTER CLASS" or "HOKE WON" with regards to that recruiting class - still way too early to tell.
