Banner Kerfuffle
What's with the new banner?
Unfortunately, the winner from the banner contest uses a source photo from a flickr user who isn't exactly down with Creative Commons. He's asked me to take down the banner banner, and I've done so. In its stead is the other banner the banner banner creator submitted to the banner contest and yes I'm just trying to cram "banner" in to this sentence as many times as I can banner.
Yes, the above image got knocked out in the first round, but since the second-place finisher in the competition volunteered to have his entry replaced with the above I don't think he'll mind.
That's all. This is becoming something of a burgeoning tradition at MGoBlog, the banner contest winner that gets knocked out partway through the season.

It would have been solved forever if Yvgenni's Evil Masterpiece was installed from the first.
You cannot stop Evil. You can only hope it gives you a wonderful banner that you should have chosen for fear of crap like this.

the one in my avatar. I posted up the large version a while ago.
I don't know what the rights were on the original moon photo (unaltered was with an american flag).
I will post it up again if anyone wants it. Give me a day or two.
I would say just don't take credit for the photoshop, but someone from some where else will pass it off as their own somewhere down the line (as people have done with my mgovideo game postings, although it hasn't stopped me from sharing)

IF that's the case, I'm in big trouble because I pretty much rip off half my stuff from Flickr. Isn't that what god created Flickr for in the first place?

@The peanut gallery:
Why is the photographer a "douchebag"? Because he doesn't want his work reproduced without permission? Without being informed that it's being used (per the photographer's comments on Flickr)?
What would you guys think if someone was reproducing Brian's work elsewhere without permission? What do you guys think of the "Fulmer Cup" site that rips off EDSBS?
It is arguably disappointing that the guy didn't release his work under Creative Commons. But he didn't and that's his choice. That does not make him a "douchebag."

What's the point in having a banner contest if Brian is just going to pick the one that he prefers in the end?
Sure he asked the second place winner for permission, but what about third placewinner? fourth place? anyone in the second round even? No... he likes the one that was booted in the first round, showing that most of his audience didn't even really like the thing.
If there were no contest, there would be no issue with Brian just posting what he likes. But having people vote on it just to ignore the results sends the message that he doesn't really care what his audience wants. His explaination reads as such.
He almost just comes out to say: I know that a lot of you didn't like this one, explaining why it was out in the first round, but I do like it. I'm know I asked for everyone's opinion, but it's my site. Not yours.

Maize and True,
You need a valium. It's a banner. Can the outrage.

This to look like I was filled with rage about the decision. It's not like I'll stop coming to the site.
Just saying, if i had known that the voting was all for naught, I personally wouldn't have bothered voting in four rounds over several weeks in the first place.
Maybe some other people wouldn't have either.

I'm sure Brian will be willing to compensate you for all the hard work you put in voting in a fucking banner election. I, personally, am deeply sorry for the combined 90 seconds the 4 rounds must have taken you.

You have to realize that Chitownblue has:
Narcissistic personality disorder -- a mental disorder in which people have an inflated sense of their own importance and a deep need for admiration. They believe that they're superior to others and have little regard for other people's feelings. But behind this mask of ultra-confidence lies a fragile self-esteem, vulnerable to the slightest criticism.

Enjoy Life, Enjoy Life, Enjoy life.
Relax, calm down. It is only a blog.
You must have some serious issues if someone disagreeing with your opinion hurts you this much.
I know the market looks down, but take some valium! It's just the internet!

I'm know I asked for everyone's opinion, but it's my site.
That's why he can do it. How much have you donated in the past year?
Also, democracy is a formula that produces shit. The banner contest proved it. Round after round of Michael Bay looking "EPIC" banners with lots of dramatic filters and deep, poignant pictures of coaches that sucked.

Obviously, he has every right to do what he pleases with the site. I just wish he didn't tell everyone that he was going to let them decide something that will be on his site and then ignore it.
I really wish I had another example to use than this, but here goes...
That's like American Idol letting the voters know that they ignore all of their votes and pick who they want anyways. Not saying that this doesn't happen already, but at least they don't come out and tell everybody that they're wrong and here's who we're going with instead.
I'm just saying....... Just have people submit banners, display them and then pick one. Don't go through the trouble of setting everything else up and involving your readers.
It makes readers feel that their opinions can contribute to the site when it doesn't.
P.S. maybe a better example to use for the WLA would have been the 2000 election when the U.S. told the voters that more people voted for Gore, but we're going for Bush.
Democracy does suck!!! (I swear I'm not a hippie. I have short hair and I wash it).

Ok, look at it this way.
This banner lost the popular vote.
But by way of the Electoral College, where Brian's vote count for 20000000, and the popular vote counts for 10, it won in a landslide.
October 2nd, 2008 at 10:35 AM ^
That is absolutely perfect!
October 2nd, 2008 at 10:28 AM ^
winners of the popular vote got the books that were promised, and he did actually put up the winner of the popular vote until the guy whose photo was sampled threw a hissy fit, even though it wasn't his favorite one. so i don't know where you get off, exactly.
as he noted, this happened last year too, and as others have noted, it's his site. he might ask for popular opinion, but he never promised to be governed by it. maybe that should be made explicit in future banner contests for the whiners in the crowd: the popular vote determines only that--what is popular, and maybe there's a reward for that, but brian puts up whatever he wants to put up.
anyhow, it might more fun to see a rotating selection of the submissions throughout the year as relevant and/or funny. i wouldn't want to look at them all the time, but i bet there's humor to be mined from the paint banner and naked man.
and fwiw, i think this banner rocks. it's the perfect visual representation of the expertise and precision that make this blog what it is, emphasizes the winged helmet that represents so much of what makes michigan football what it is, and it's beautifully designed.

I read Brian's post as saying this banner was created by the same person who created the winning banner. I'm assuming Brian felt that since that person won the contest, but was kind of screwed over by his banner needing to be taken down, he should could still be rewarded by having his other banner used.
Anyhow, your vote counted- the banner that was up for the last month was the one that won the contest.

Correct. Both the blueprint banner and the banner banner were submitted by Jason Minor. Also, the runner ups in the banner contest used photographs that were pretty recognizable and I don't want to have to pull the banner *again*.
Also also, I'm pretty sure this one got knocked out in the first round only because people didn't see it full size.
