RB recruiting in 2014

Submitted by Bluestreak on

I was wondering if we'll take any RBs in this class. I haven't seen any RB offers go out in this class (Elijah Hood was one) but not too many others.

I know we have two in the last class with Deveon Smith and Derrick Green but considering Fitz is a senior and we have no other 'elite' back on our roster will we take another?

I see the following:

Thomas Rawls

Drake Johnson

Justice Hayes

Dennis Norfleet

Deveon Smith

Derrick Green

Fitz Touissant

Maybe Peppers will also play on offense?

Wow, so we are just copying and pasting stuff straight from TTB and not even giving Magnus credit? No citation?

Classy!

Yeah I guess somewhere in your words there you gave him credit.  All I "heard" was, "thank you for pointing out he ripped this from my website, but I kinda sorta guess if you click on ONE word in his post, you can tell it's mine."

I'm confused.  Why does Magnus need to give a guy credit who simply pasted in information that Magnus himself compiled?  It's not like Magnus got pissed at the poster.  Occasionally you contribute some good stuff to the board (a few snippets about Jabrill Peppers and his standing with Scouts quickly comes to mind), but the Magnus bashing got tired months ago.  You're rapidly approaching 'David from Wyoming' levels of vapid and negative posts.

Magnus has mellowed out a lot in the last few years.  At this point, he contributes more solid info and analysis than anyone else here who isn't getting paid to do so, and he does his own research to formulate his opinions.

Most of all, I would be willing to bet that there aren't five people here who know as much about football as he does.  Bashing him really doesn't make him look bad at all; it just makes the basher look bad.

A lot of what you said there is true, but not all of it. The problem that I see is that Magnus has a strong tendency to talk down to people, as well as using circular logic when arguing with people over minutiae. I can't ever think of an instance in which he readily admitted to being wrong about something. If he were to drop that schtick, he would be respected much more.

Until then, a lot of people will continue to be put off by the way he carries himself online.

The funny thing is, there are times when I've been wrong and admitted it.  Just because you didn't see it or don't remember it doesn't mean it never happens.  You don't notice those things, though, because you're not looking for them.  You've reached the conclusion that I "use circular logic" and "never admit to being wrong," and that's the way I will remain in your mind until one of us stops posting on this site and you forget about me.

And all of this ignores the topic at hand, in which I've used various pieces of evidence to support my argument. Of course, nobody can be proven "right" or "wrong" right now when projecting Shallman, since he hasn't started college yet.  However, objective observers would trend toward my side (that Shallman won't be a tailback), and in fact we have evidence that they do (see: ESPN, Rivals, Scout, 247 Sports).

It's pretty tough to prove that I can admit when I'm wrong when the preponderance of evidence regarding Shallman suggests that I'm right.  Wait until the next time I'm wrong about something and see what happens...

I should have been more clear. I wasn't specifically referring to the "discussion" on this thread, in which you did use various bits of evidence to make your point. But (hate starting sentences with "but") you also did some of the things I was talking about.

I really don't have an opinion on Shallman, as I don't follow recruiting very closely (thank goodness). You may very well be right, I'm not suggesting otherwise. I'm trying to get you to recognize that you aren't an easy guy to have an honest discussion with.

It is what it is, but you could do better about these things.

What's it going to take to get this guy banned? I mean don't all have to like every poster on this site but ffs, every single one of this guy's comments are immature, flaimbaiting, shit directed at a single poster.

Hilliman and Ballage are the two most likely out of that group, with Hilliman probably being the better of the two and really underrated, especially when you take into account his offer sheet. I personally really like L.J. Scott's game and said as much a long while back, didn't realize he had an offer. He was rated at one point as a FB, but I think he is in the D. Smith class where he has some power but is much more of a TB than a FB. Maybe not quite as good as Smith at this point, but can be a really good back and I think he is really underrated by the services.

Scott does not hold an offer, and I have reason to believe (not certain) that McKenzie does not hold a Michigan offer either.

It's Ballage, Mixon, Hilliman or bust. No new names have popped up in a while, and they're in good with a few 2015 backs. Green/Smith have allowed them to swing for the fences in '14 and then get back to work in the next cycle.

EDIT: RB is a position to watch at camp though; I shouldn't have disregarded the position completely. Still, they are not heavily pursuing any option they haven't offered yet.

Sorry everyone! It was late last night and I was just trying to help the OP. Yes, this info is from the 2014 offer list on Touch the Banner created by our great friend Magnus.. Next time I will not forget to give credit where credit is due.

I guess some people think that saying recruit X wont come here is flamebait.

Coach Ferrigno was in to see him, but not sure if we even get a visit. Until he visits I would consider it a long shot to get him.

From a recent rivals article:

Once spring ball and the school year winds down Mixon is targeting some unofficial visits. Notre Dame, Oregon and Texas are possible destinations. Oregon has yet to offer but continues to express interest.

But I don't hear about any potential RBs visiting or announcing Michigan as their top school. There isn't enough RB 'buzz' in this class. Maybe its just me.

no joke its hoke

I just don't see the need for a rb in this class right now. we are in on so many good players I don't see the need to take a flier on one at this point. now if we miss on some kids or the class ends up bigger than expected I could see it.

As of now, I believe we only have 15 spots in the 2014 class.  With Peppers, we are up to 10 commits already.  We are still looking for a SAM, we have two spots earmarked for D Line (hopefully Hand & McDowell), and then we'll probably take two more DBs (presumably Westphal and a safety), an offensive lineman, and a slot receiver.  Doing that would require 17 spots, and right now we don't even have that many.

I beiieve Hoke has previously said that he considers 3 players to be a normal level of attrition, so I wouldn't be surprised if the staff is recruiting RBs with the expectation that they will have room for one in the end.  But since we already have a bunch of RBs on the roster and since one of the highly-rated 2015 RB prospects is a Michigan lean, I also imagine the staff is prepared to forego a RB this year if they don't wind up with enough scholarships.

I would look for 1 OL, 1 LB, 1 DB, 1 DL and 1 RB. If we could land both Hand and McDowell, then we could probably do without the RB. it's not a critical need this year, but you like to take at least one in every class if at all possible. If we get up to 17 or 18, then a RB should definitely be in the mix.

Shallman is a Fullback or perhaps H-back, and if you want to throw that position into the mix, you need to include Houma and Kerridge as well, but their role is going to be more blocking than running the ball.

Space Coyote

Of his speed and athleticism, which is good for a FB/U-back, but not really for a RB. Especially with the other two coming in, I think it's a fair assumption that he ends up somewhere other than RB, and I believe he realizes as much as I think he backed off his adamance that he was a RB only later in the recruiting cycle.

Full backs don't get 4 stars across the board from recruiting services. Running backs do. Where does this "unathletic" garbage come from? You're not the only one that's said something along those lines and I can't help but wonder if he had the exact same measurables but came from Pahokee instead of Catholic Central whether people would be so quick to discount him as a running back.

Magnus

ESPN: 3-star FULLBACK
Rivals: 4-star ATHLETE
247 Sports: 4-star FULLBACK/STRONGSIDE DEFENSIVE END

You're awfully insistent about his position/rankings for being wrong about almost everything so far in this conversation.

EDIT: I didn't include his Scout ranking because the site won't come up for me right now. I'm not 100% sure of his ranking/position on there.

Bad morning, Magnus? Like usual, you pick on the details while missing the overall picture. Speaking of being wrong about everything in a conversation, I know Shallman is no Michael Cox and we're all better off for it.

The fact of the matter is that most recruiting sites had him at and most other teams recruited him as a DE. Now he's a 4 star across the board on most sites as a FB or ATH. Again, he's a good athlete at those positions, but if you actually objectively watch his tape he doesn't display the foot speed, agility, balance, or athleticism to be more than an occassional short yardage guy who mostly plays FB or Uback or gets moved to defense. He's skilled, and would be more skilled than most at FB/Uback, which along with what I said above is why he got 4 stars. I don't know why you want to make this a race or socio econonic thing. Its just what most people and I see from him as a player.

Butterfield

May 29th, 2013 at 9:06 AM ^

4 star "athlete" without enough athleticism. I totally gotcha. Not trying to pick a fight. I understand he's coming in with Derrick Green, and if Green lives up to the hype, there probably won't be a lot of running back carries for the rest of the roster. But why shallman is singled out as opposed to, say, Deveon Smith, Thomas Rawls, or whoever, just seems odd to me. The guy was recruited as a running back, can we at least keep him there until the coaches tell us otherwise?
