OT: Red Wings @ Hawks Game 5 Open Thread

Submitted by I Bleed Maize N Blue on

Elimination game.  The Wings have stepped on the Hawks' throats.  Can they cut off their heads?  Don't want to give them any life.  It'll be tough to win that 4th game, and on the road, too.  But there's no time like the present.

TV:  8 PM ET, CBC and NBC

Let's Go Red Wings!

FINISH THEM!

Gotta admit I'm still worried because it's not like the Wings have been dominant, nor have the Hawks played especially badly (not real disciplined, but not bad either.)  But on the other hand I remember how incredibly frustrating it was when the Wings were in their shoes and guys like Kiprusoff and JS Giguere were standing on their head.  You feel like you'll never see another goal again.  We'll see if Howie can bring it home.

Does anyone know if we are going to have to put up with Ed Olczyk tonight on the telecast?

It just seems wrong that we have to put up with the Hawk's local color guy on these national telecasts. He has truly ruinedmy enjoyment of what should be a very enjoyable series. I still am mad about how he characterized the boarding penalty on Franzen in Game 3.

His other comment that really bugs me is when he says that it is generally recognized that the Wings have historically used interference to our advantage and that was a major reason for ourprolonged success through the years.

It's as bad as having to listen to Buckeye broadcasters during Michigan football games!

Although I would love to see it happen, not sure I can predict a Wings win.  Detroit been a little fortunate the last few games - Howard standing on his head, a few Hawks losing their cool, and getting just a crease of space for a goal without getting any unlucky goals coming on the other end.

But then again, if you flip the coin to look at it from the optimist perspective:  Both teams have taken on the personality of their coaches.  Hawks - talented, a little wild, capable and a little emotionally raw at times.  But absolutely flying around the rink and going after the wings after every whistle; but a little whiny at the wrong times.

Redwings (again like their coach), totally under control at all times.  No whining whatsoever, no acknowledgement of anything but trying to get the job done.  All else is unimportant.  And unflinchingly surgical when any opening shows.  When is the last time you heard no discussion AT ALL over the refs/calls from a fairly badly refereed series from one team???  I mean, in ANY playoffs of any sport?  Love these Wings.  Don't know if they have the talent to win it all, but they are certainly playing like champions.

Go Wings

the team that scores the most goals tonight wins the game...I know, I know, going out on a limb here, but I got a good feeling. Go Wings! ( Disclaimer) alcohol has contributed to this post....

A lot of people have remarked about the role reversals this year for the Wings. Usually, we would be considered the talented juggernaut with all the pressure on us to win.

This year it is generally assumed that we are a mediocre team who is overachieving.

No pressure on us to win - all the pressure on the Hawks.

So strange!

now with the hawks having what they will understandably see as a nice victory.  close game until the end so it's not like the wings got run out of the building.  however, tomorrow night i think it's on the wings to win it because if not, they have to go to chi-town for a game 7against an excellent hockey team.  here's to hoping it's the wings in 6....or 7.  go wings.

Most sites in Vegas seem to be going with the Blackhawks at -1.5 for this game. Even so, I think I like where this is headed if the Red Wings can continue to keep challenging Crawford. In the last couple games, the Blackhawks have essentially been outmaneuvered - hopefully, this happens again tonight.

Howard has been just amazing - in the playoffs, I believe he's averaged about 2 goals against with a 92% percent save percentage, if I did the math right, including 86 of 88 shots stopped in the last three games, which is better than a 97% save percentage. We may very well need that level of performance tonight.

So, I'm not a hockey expert or anything, but it seems like the Wings should probably try to keep possession of the puck for longer than 2.5 seconds if they want to win

I'm reminded of the scene in Schoolhouse Rock's Interjections, when the little guy stands up in the football stadium and shouts, "HURRAY! I'm for the other team!!"

Go Hawks.
