I spent a good few of my childhood years near there while my dad worked at Tinker.

This is devastating. I can't even imagine what those parents must be going through. I hope they overcome and rebuild with ease.
I feel for those people.
Here is South Florida we don't get those type of storms but when a Hurricane comes we get days or even a week notice. I can't imagine 10 mins to get somewhere safe.
Makes me sick to watch this. Tonight would be a great night to donate to people who need money more desperately than we might.
Yes it's sad but is this really thread worthy? Don't know what can be discussed aside from the "hope they do better" and "sucks to be them"
Wow.
seriously ....
This thread will be a bunch of selfish assholes talking about how tragic this whole thing was to make themselves look better. Those who really feel for the victims don't feel the desire to showcase it on a blog. It's like one big PR thread
i started this thread as a "PR" stunt. not to let people know that a awful event is taking place in our country.
The only person that is being a selfish asshole is you. This is a terrible event that warrants a thread for people who can possibly make a difference and help out in any way possible. My thoughts and prayers are with those affected by this tornado.
You really think you're making a difference by commenting on this thread? Make sure you "like" it on Facebook too. That'll help.
Hey, it worked for that Kony guy, right? He must've gotten elected or whatever, because I didn't see his name after that one week of campaigning. Thank God those Facebook polls work, otherwise Guantanamo would still be open, the government would be openly disregarding the Constitution, and my Dad would still be smoking! And hey, that's why I share my beliefs on ESPN and Huffington Post blogs, because MY VOICE MATTERS. We really can work together to make a good, honest change for the better! We can work with politicians, out-groups, minorities, businesses, bankers, athletes, bullies, wusses, teachers, policemen, and the military to make America a better place by letting our voices ring loud and free. (Disclaimer: This is all false and completely untrue). Hope the best for Moore.
I've been visiting the MGoBlog for a few weeks now...and I have to say that your comments are perhaps the most offensive that I have seen.
It's too bad that you can just re-up and get a new account as FUB v2.0 or whatever.
I vote Bolivian.
He's been trolling since the day he joined mgoblog. I assume he's a sparty asshat.
I don't think he ever said his intent was to make a difference. Rather, just bring it to people's attention. And there might be some people out there who read this blog, don't listen much to the news, but when they find out about today's events through this blog, they'll go donate. In that instant, posting this thread would have been infinitely worth doing, even if it was just one person. I couldn't say with certainty that that's happened, but I'd like to think you get my point. Not exactly sure what fault you could possibly find in all of that, but if you want to be a Debbie Downer about it, then that's your problem.
As the old saying goes, if you don't like the thread, don't comment on it.
You forgot to insulate yourself from all criticism by labeling all the posters who dare to line up on the side of thinknig you're being a dick, as "sheeple".
I really don't watch the news...just not into politics, slant, etc. Also, just all of the negativity, it's depressing for me.
The downside is that I'm late to events (both positive and negative).
I had no idea about this tragic event until I saw this thread. In fact, I skipped over it the first time because I just saw "Prayers for Moore" and thought it was person who passed years ago.
Anyway, thanks for starting this thread and #1 passing along the information. But more importantly, allowing friends of MGoBlog to come together to support and share thoughts/prayer for the people of Moore, Oklahoma.
God Bless.
if we can't have a lengthy discussion about it, it doesn't matter, right?
You need some perspective.
who starved to death yesterday.
There are tragedies around the world every day. Please feel free to highlight the one you feel is most tragic. No one is diminishing anything else that happened by commenting on the situatation in Moore.
Is there not enough death for you in Moore, Oklahoma? Does there need to be a Michigan connection? Would the Tsunami qualify? Would the Twin Towers bombing qualify? FTR, this is off season, when OT is ok. And it isn't politics.
Also, I happen to be hard at work, and hadn't bother to check the news. This post allowed me to bring up another couple windows and see what happened.
Have some compassion. I pity someone like you, who doesn't give a rip about a tragedy like this, and whose world vision is so narrow that you don't care about anything beyond trivia like Michigan sports.
I love Michigan sports. I follow Michigan sports obsessively. Way too obsessively. But at the end of the day, these are games that don't matter. They're children's games that we follow as a means of escape from sometimes humdrum existence. Please don't callously denigrate those who might ask for prayer for something that really matters.
End of rant.
p.s. I still wish there were some OT posts about the city of Detroit and the Emergency Manager and the economic meltdown and corruption and crime and the future, but that seems to be such a third rail that it can't be touched by anyone. It is fascinating, from a distance, and I would have thought there would be some Michigan Alums in the Detroit area who might have an insider perspective on what's going on in Southeastern Michigan.
Obvious troll is obvious. Ban this shithead
Loser!
May God help those in need this evening in Moore, OK and comfort those mourning horrific losses.
He's not a horrible person for doing so. I think there is a larger discussion to be had one day, not necessarily on this blog, but for people who post that 'their thoughts and prayers' are with those/ family/ friends that were injured every time something like this happens.
We don't need to know that everyone feels bad all the time. We ALL feel bad, but posting that you are praying does come across as selfish.
There's an argument to be made, but not the day of one if the worst natural disasters in US history.
But I can't for the life of me understand how saying you are praying for someone else is a selfish act. I suppose we'll just agree to disagree, and let people mourn in their own way.
God doesn't exist. If god doesn't exist, then praying doesn't do anything but make the person praying feel better. Whatever is done solely for the purpose of making oneself feel better is selfish. Prayer is selfish. QED.
and it appears you need it.
Your argument is entirely predicated on the assumption that God doesn't exist. That's quite an assumption to make so confidently and definitively.
Sure. Maybe you disagree. But that argument can serve an explanation as to why some people think that prayer is selfish.
It is not inherently selfish to pray or give wishes. I think that some people feel that some other people only do it to be seen doing it, like wearing a funny hat at the Kentucky Derby. Note all the ambiguous qualifiers...
EDIT: Judging by the next several posts, it seems that my point is quickly proved correct. People bickering about how THEY choose to deal with it. Losing point of the whole thread. People lost lives, kids, houses, etc, but I'VE been inconvenienced by someone else's point of view!
understand prayer it can be the most unselfish act you can do for a person.
Does altruism exist? Discuss. Now that is a thread topic worthy of real Michigan Men and I suggest that we take up this debate when the day breaks in the morrow!
Disagrree - sure. Downvote, that is the sign of an insecure, smallminded person
No. It's a sign that this thread is wandering too far in the "no touch zone" for the blog. I don't really have an opinion on it, just think that may be why it's being negged. Note the similarly negged post a few places above that leans to the other side of the religious debate...
Anyone can pray. Not anyone is willing to place themselves in physical danger for other people. There is no more selfless act than offering up what is most precious(life) for another.
What is most precious to me. Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much. Most of us are not there and could not have been there to save anyone. I pray for those who are injured, those that are still missing, and for the families that have lost loved ones. If you don't believe in prayer that is up to you, just don't tell others what is "most precious" in their lives.
Maybe you should pray and ask that next time maybe your God doesn't destroy a town with a tornado.
This whole conversation just shows the inanity of the idea that there's a deity that gives a shit about people. If God cares about the people injured by the tornado maybe he should have prevented it from happening.
Mysterious ways indeed.
I think many people see it as encouraging when people say, and presumably do that. I for one am very encouraged. I even mentioned to my wife, "Hey, mgoblog has a post about Moore, Ok..." to show a person who doesn't understand what we do on here all day that we have compassion too and that some things are enough to give even the most hardcore sports enthusiasts pause.
That's one of the better parts of the blog, if you ask me, and I'm here for Michigan football. I guess I cant relate to the selfish part, because regardless of one's beliefs, I've always found it to be selfless when someone has stopped his or her day to say they'll pray for me or someone else or offer condolences. Just my perspective. I appreciate the sports part of who we are as people here. Otherwise I wouldn't be here. Let's not lose the humanity part, though.
But it would cross the no politics rule. There is lots more you can do than just pray and donate.
FUCK YOU!
none of those were "small" twisters either. All but one was an F4 or worse! (this assumes today's storm is an F4, which seems likely given the pictures) Unbelievable for a relatively small (in a geographical sense) place.
aren't fun but all of life isn't fun. I love Michigan football & spend probably way too much time reading about it & watching highlights all the time so topics like this help us keep life & football in perspective.
its awful that states like Ok have thousands of miles of open area but this storm had to hit a town. one thing we have learned over the years is that Americans will pull together and help every way we can.
Donate money and maybe even have some kind of music benefit, you are probably right.
If you mean have a serious dialogue about what we can do to limit the impact of future severe weather events, I highly doubt it.
Heaven forbid one suggests we do more than donate and pray and actually try to do things to minimize tge devastation of future disasters. If it doesn't fit in my worldview, it must be downvoted and labeled as flamebait.
To downvite something suggesting we should all do more?
Crazy world.
