CBS Sports - NCAA Power Rankings - Ohio #1
Dennis Dodd has put out CBS Sports Post Spring top 25 and he has Ohio on top. Interesting that he feels they will be prepared to beat an SEC opponent in the championship game because, "this is the Big Ten where there isn't a serious challenger to the Buckeyes."
Sadder then that is that there are no other B1G schools in the top 19 and only Northwestern and Nebraska in the top 25. No Michigan in the top 25? This will be good bulletin board fodder as this team gets motivated for a better season than 2012. This team was within a minute of beating a good SEC team. I think Dennis Dodd has misplaced the reality that Michigan is back, and the SEC and Ohio be )#(#$.
Yeah, well, it's Dennis Dodd.
Wow, that's a really high ranking for the Bobcats. That came out of nowhere. Good for them.
I wonder where Ohio State is ranked...
I've never heard that one before.
THEY ARE NOT THE NUMBER 1 TEAM BECAUSE THEY HAVE AN EASY SCHEDULE THAT IS NOT WHAT A POWER RANKING IS A POWER RANKING IS WHO IS THE BEST TEAM NOT WHO IS THE TEAM WHO WILL GO UNDEFEATED BECAUSE THEY PLAY CRAPPY TEAMS ARGHHHHHHHHHH THIS IS SO STUPID AND IT HAPPENS ALL THE TIME AND IT MUST BE STOPPED
Why are you yelling at me? =*(
THE STUPID IS SO STUPID
In this instance, it's warranted. In fact, I don't think his letters are capital enough.
Jon Snow.
I think there is something to playing a weak schedule so you are healthy to play in a bowl game. That is why I feel the Boise States of the world never have a justified reason to be in the BCS until they play in a real league. Playing one good team a year does not suffice.
Look at BSU's schedule for 2013 if you think they have played a weak schedule the last few years:
I thought I remembered that one Saturday night. Husky stadium is still one of the five loudest stadiums in college football, so you don't want to go in there with an iffy QB situation (Wisky, Sparty).
If they get past that game, they'll still blow a game, maybe at SDSU. BSU is programmed to blow a game late in the season to end their championship game hopes.
Them and what defense?
The stupidity of these rankings is plain on its face. The only value in this article is to tuck it away until next year. Any time that Dodd says anything, and you consider believing it, pull out this article, compare it to what actually happened, have a good laugh, and ignore him.
This is actually a premise for a good diary. Look up a few prognosticators from before a season and compare their opinions to the results of the season.
The work has been done as far as rankings go.

They look at preseason and final ranking to determine how over or under rated a team was for a given year and then give year by year results for analysis.
season total variances on the list (ND and USC had some significant variances as well).
someone shows they can beat Urban and the Bucks. As much as I hate it, they have lorded over the B1G for a decade and show no signs of slowing down with Urban at the helm and the B1G down overall. Michigan is the only legit threat at this point but they need to prove it on the field whereas Ohio gets the benefit of the doubt based on the last 10+ years of dominance.
We will show that they can be beat this year.
Then they will get a BCS Bowl and get crushed by someone.
Yes! The plan is all coming together! It has been foreseen!
A loss to Michigan and a Bowl loss - I'm prematurely schadenfreudeing!
USC was also preseason number 1 last year, and look where they ended up. Preseason rankings are useless.
Yeah, but Lane Kiffen is a big confounder to that example
LOL!
Wait, so no team in the B1G will beat them, so that means they can beat the best SEC team? Something in this logic doesn't follow...
They did go undefeated last year but everyone is forgetting how they got there. They were actually fortunate to pull out a ton of close games and easily could've had 3-4 losses
UCF 31-16
Cal 35-28
UAB 29-15
MSU 17-16
Indiana 52-49
Purdue 29-22 (OT)
Wisconsin 21-14 (OT)
Michigan 26-21
Sure, they made it undefeated, but they sure made it as difficult as possible. Seems like regression to the mean would suggest that they're going to have a few unlucky games this year since they had so many lucky ones last year
And Cal handed them that game, in Columbus, and I don't even think Cal made a bowl last year despite a pretty easy schedule.
Purdue should've had 'em as well.
Very true, that was the same day as the MSU game.
Good teams have close games, I get it, but Purdue and Cal were bad. A top 5 team should kick the shit out of them.
Oh, and all this tells me is that he didn't actually watch any B1G football last year.
The OSU game is the only one that matters to me this year. If we don't get a win in that game can you imagine how many Urban Meyer/OSU media fluff pieces will be out there? That train needs to not only be stopped, it needs to be blown off the FUC!*#% tracks!!!!
I've been waiting for Michigan to curb stomp them for a long time. I really would like that to happen this year, not just once, but twice.
Alabama has earned the right to be number 1 until someone beats them
Alabama does better when they are not number 1.
OSU hype machine is running in 5th gear. SI has them on the main page today too. That said, Urban's 2nd year at all of his previous programs were very good. Their offense will be impossible to stop this year as they return literally everyone. Defense could be a different story, but the talent is there.
I guarantee they have at least 2 loses this year, mark my words.
I don't see 2 losses for them unless Braxton or Hyde gets hurt. Only 2 games they have to show up for are @ NW and @ Mich.
I think they'll have to show up for Wisconsin and Penn State.
Wisconsin seems to always give them a game...but it's in Columbus, at night, where Wisconsin hasn't won in like 30 years. Penn State is not going to be any good this year. Bank it.
Yeah, Penn State had a good season last year but it was more of a "us agaist the world", "everyone thinks we'll be bad" type of motivation that made them competitive. When the penalties and sanctions hit them it will hit them hard. I think they are going to have some rough roads ahead.
Wisconsin won in Columbus in 1999, 2001, and 2004, so there is some recent history of them winning in Columbus. OSU vs. Wisc all time
I am more concerned that Wisconsin has a new coach with a new offense.
and they almost lost a couple games last year because they overlooked the team. I'm pretty sure luck is going to swing the other way sooner or later.
If you are including the bowl game in your calculation of losses, I would agree with you.
Their offense does not return literally everyone.
I think they return like 9 of 11.
But that is not literally everyone. I'm keepin YOU honest!
11 out of 11 is literally every starter. 44 out of 44 (or however many offensive players they have) would be literally everyone. "literally" means you are being literal and not using any hyperbole.
Their offense should be good as long as Miller stays healthy, although I don't think their line is all that. They do enough to enable Miller to do his thing, but they don't take games over. Defensively their line won't be as good, but their back 7 will be more experienced and probably less prone to meltdowns. They'll probably have 4-5 close games this year compared to 6 last year, and it's highly unlikely that they'll sweep their close games again.
is one of the worst pre-season ranking lists I have seen, if not the worst.Laughable.
Trying to put my homerism aside but Michigan should be in there and no way Ohio goes undefeated again.
People are underestimating this team and I dont know why.
The one thing that really sticks out for me is that the team has 59 freshmen and sophomores on the roster, counting redshirts. Which will make a hell of a strong team next year.
I think the Big Ten Network mentioned somewhere that Michigan was the youngest team in the conference. Hoke's first two years were kind of Rich Rod transition years. 2013 should be the year we start to see what Hoke's vision and plan for this team is, but we will be young. In my opinion, like you mentioned, 2014 & 2015 is when this team should really take off.
If the James Ross hype is legit, I can't wait to see him and Jake Ryan (fully recovered) play together next year. Also, if Devin does stay for year 5.
The love fest with this douche is unreal... The season needs to start already
