what happened to mgovideo?

Submitted by tasnyder01 on

I am receiving "error: 403" stuff from mgovideo. Does anyone know if it's just down today or has this been a regular occurance?

Devotee should have kept his mouth shut and never emailed YouTube about anything. Maybe they would have taken down mgovideo and WolverineHistorian anyways... but after he mentioned them in the email it was like giving them the green light.

All this copyright crap is getting out of hand, a coworker went to his nephews high school talent show and they were told not to record the show because the school owned the copyright.  WTF?

I'm not gone but most of my account is.  ZFR blocked nearly all of my single game highlight videos, which was close to 300.  They don't seem to have a problem with compilation videos so my player tributes, defense tributes and other random vids are still up.

It also pisses me off that you have to watch an ad now when you click on my remaining videos.  I never agreed to that but I guess YouTube changed the rules yet again.

pretty sure mgovideo got a cease and desist about a month ago. some of the videos i'm sure you can still find on mgoblue.com, but as far as the full games, you're pretty much S.O.L. unless you want to torrent it which, in my opinion, isn't worth it.

I got my first cease and desist more almost two years ago. The site is still there, the 403 error is because I renamed the index page and directly listing is disabled. I did this because according to Google Analytics, someone using T3Media's network was on my site for hours yesterday, most likely their in-house counsel, Tom Buchanan. Besides, the site is mostly just 600 pages of deleted videos at this point.

All of the attempts at re-uploading have been quashed too, or so it seems based on a Twitter search. There was an MGoVideo2 and evne 3 account for a bit, but those are gone as well, from the looks of it. It definitely will be a while, if we're going to have such a comprehensive library such as MGoVideo, at least through conventional channels, it seems. Very sad, as a lot of sweat undoubtedly went into that.

Hopefully, one that doesn't get bought up by a company whose goal is to produce revenues commensurate with the word from which they took their name.

Mgovideo and the like are ways college football grows fans.  Allowing these games to remain posted is essentially free advertising for college football, the NCAA, The University of Michigan, and so on.  It's not as if the free broadcasts steal money from some rival site where these games are being sold, as if you can go on iTunes or something and pay to download games or seasons like you would a music album or audiobook.

The people that worship the sport to the point that they'll watch games from 10 and 20 years ago are the same people that buy thousands of dollars of tickets and merchandise.  Stop treating your customers like thieves.

It's like the video game community on youtube. If companies really wanted they could strike the channels for posting gameplay, but why the hell would you get rid of free advertising? They leave it because of that. There are times though where companies will put bans on recording the endings to games for say a month or so after the game was released.

but I think it's especially stupid to take down highlights of historical games. Where else can you watch highlights from (for instance) 1995 Michigan vs UVA? Answer: nowhere. No one is going to see those highlights ever again unless the BTN is so kind as to show the entire game sometime

Edit: I now see that that video wasn't taken down, but the point stands. Most highlights from 10+ years ago are basically gone forever

How many total gigabytes worth of video are we talking here? Is this primarily a Youtube rules thing, or would creating a site to host all these videos independently invite legal trouble?

This is horrible.

wolverine historian and mgovideo:

Have either of you tried using a Chinese site like http://www.youku.com/

They may not comply with takedown requests.

I can't read Chinese but someone here must know how.  Maybe you could write a tutorial and wolverine historian and mgovideo could try it out.

Yes, I tried youku (and every other major video site) and everything I uploaded was flagged for copyright (by the Chinese!) in less than 24 hours. Believe it or not, YouTube is the safest place on the internet to upload copyrighted material.

If you go to the MGoBlue.com highlight video of the Men's Gymnastics Team winning the NCAA championship-- this is MGoBlue.com fergodsakes-- they have to begin it with a voiceover saying they weren't allowed to use any footage of the actual championship.  So as the announcer tells you of the magnificent successes of the team members, to illustrate it they have to show footage from previous meets or practice!  Now could some lawyers explain, if student athletes are not professionals, who is it who is actually forbidding their own school, which pays for their education and training, from showing highlights of their students' competition free of charge on the Athletic Dept.'s website?  And what is the legal defense for this prohibition?  Doesn't the University at least own its own history?

now that the low hanging fruit has been picked, the real work can begin.

The Universe believes in encryption. It is easier to encrypt information than to decrypt it.

If this sounds cryptic that's because...it is ;)

You'll see something by September 1st. Stay tuned.

That's funny - didn't realize it was that high.  And I've never gotten a warning letter for this - have several for downloading tv shows. I recognize their rights but think it's silly to harass people for that.

Is any of this connected to this new initiative they have in conjunction with the five or so big cable providers?  I'm guessing not. They have some kind of increased surveillance going on to find torrents and the cable providers are agreeing to step up the pressure on users. Started in February.
