Question on DB/S Recruiting

Submitted by Chi-Blue on

So on the Scout/Michigan front page they list an offer going out to 3 star saftey prospect from Florida Quincy Wilson. I know many of us are hopefull/confident about getting Peppers, but what position are we recruiting him for? How many DB's are we taking? Last I saw I thought it was 3 with the hope of . . .

J. Peppers - Safety

P. Westphaul - CB

M. Nicholson - S

Obviously any attrition would change this, does anyone know out DB recruiting situation?

I'd say right now one and two would be a stretch. My guess would be there probably not recruiting him that hard, but have a backup plan in case they don't get Peppers or any other big name.

We spoke with him after the coaches swung by to see him last week and he said the coaches told him they are only taking one guy in the secondary.. From all my info I have gathered, it appears that would be Jabrill Peppers (ATH) and than a Parrker Westphal.

Hah!  I've never seen this before.

We're recruiting Peppers as a CB, Westphal as a nickel/slot corner, and Nicholson as a safety.

Like someone said above, I would be very surprised if we take just one defensive back.  We've got 1 QB, 1 TE, we're taking 3 WRs, we want 2 LBs, 3 offensive linemen, presumably 2 RBs (Hoke said he'll always take "a couple"), 2 defensive linemen...  All that adds up to 14.  Unless they've increased their desired numbers for one of those positions, that should leave 2 spots for defensive backs.  Obviously, there will be more open spots if there's attrition.

That's the way it seems.  I think they would take Hand (a DE) and McDowell (a DE/DT) and call it a day. Weakside end isn't a huge need at this point with Clark, Beyer, Ojemudia, and Charlton.  But they would probably take a WDE if Hand or McDowell escapes.

We will take two.. 1 will obviously be Peppers who I feel we land, and 2.. which I hope should be Westphal.  From speaking with Nicholson last week he says they merely just keep in touch over Facebook and that the coaches havent dropped by in a little while.  Seems things may have somewhat cooled with him...  The coaches seem to be saying just 1 cause they want premier players.  I.E the offer to Oliver is merely just a backup option.. Think Crawford from last year's class.. If Reon Dawson hadn't committed than odds were that Crawford would have been offered and more than likely committed.  I say we get both Peppers and Westphal at this point.

Don't think that Nicholson is just an afterthought here. I saw him at the Pitt Rivals Camp last week - we want this kid. His being recruited as a safety, but he could play CB too. He has over 30 offers, and is taking his time. He has been on campus 3 times, and will likely be back in the fall when he makes his officials. If he wants to commit - the coaches will find a spot for him (even if Peppers and Westphal commit by then) - I think Nicholson is that good.
