Banner Design - Basketball, football - both?

Submitted by jonvalk on

Ok, so I saw in a post the other day that people want a banner that no longer has the Denard prayer pose since he's leaving for the NFL.  I read requests for a banner that had Trey for the offseason.  I read requests to have Gardner/Lewan or some other football theme.  I read requests for some combo of the two.  I opted for a combo of the two.  This isn't meant to be some sort of permanent banner change - I didn't put enough time into that, nor do I think the banner design needs changed (maybe just a photo-swap of Gardner/Lewan or whatever for Denard).  I just wanted to see what people thought.  Enjoy.

By the way, I think a good subtext would be "not just a basketball school..."

My suggestion is putting more emphasis on bball than football, simply because Beilein has achieved more than Hoke so far.  I know Hoke won't let that stand for too long though.

Maybe the hardwood block M instead of the 50 yard line?

I like the current font and the boarders top and bottom...  So I'll pull for those being maintained.  Until fall camp, I think it's only fair that it be a basketball-only banner since we had Denard up there for the basketball season.  Maybe something based one of the photos of this, or the shot that set it up (photo credit to New York Daily News):

If we're replacing Denard because he is leaving, then shouldn't the same logic apply for Burke?

I'm just waiting for the requisite vote for The Naked Guy.

in the lettering are hard to see. I don't like the MGOBLOG font either ... it's too "fat and rounded" but I realize it was chosen so that you could place images in it. Current players would be better, but I don't like showing players given the whole EA Sports/O'Bannon thing and also, well...

Man, I LOVED the last two banners for their simplicity. The Denard prayer pose is amazing, and I also liked the subtlety of Hoke holding the Michigan helmet while he was having his picture taken with Dave Brandon. THIS is what a web banner should be -- sort of one step more complex than your logo in terms of reflecting your "axiom" (who you are, what you do) but nothing more, nothing less. Cramming coach and player photos into the letter to "prove" that M is a football AND basketball school is trying too hard. Not sure if it was you or Sixzero who did the last two banner but in general I like both of your work. Hope this feedback helps!

... center the current MGoBlog letters and put an empty football helmet on one side and the half-court Block M from Crisler on the other....

Wow. Lots of responses. I appreciate the candor of the dislikes. I am most certainly not advocating changing the banner for good (I think I spelled that out clearly in the post), but I wanted to get a forum going.

I will agree that maybe this should have been a normal thread instead of a diary. Forgive me, I'm used to creating diaries for the backgrounds and didn't think it through.

Anyway, I like the banner as is, but as much as I love Denard (so much), I think the banner should change. The reason I ha Trey on this was because I thought a short spotlight should be given his accomplishments with the basketball team.

I know this is a football-first board, and I'm a much bigger football fan, but I really lived this basketball season.

Anyway, mods, feel free to kick this o a thread if enough people are not happy with it being a diary.

The only critique I have is I am not a huge fan of the font, perhaps something more crisp?  Less rounded edges, it looks too cartoony for my taste.  Other than that I do like it.

I think it could be cool if you centered the 'MGOBLOG' part and put the halfcourt 'M' on one side and the block 'M' from the football field on the other side.  That could possibly be too busy, but that's immediately what I 'wanted' when I saw your design.

Great work, thanks for this!

I think the "HAIL" book looks really professional and polished. I don't know if it can be done, but have a football and/or basketball player over the top of MGoBlog, like Lewan is over "HAIL."

Have a bunch of approved banners from both sports.  That way you can feature a bunch of different athletes and coaches within the structure of the banner logo/brand.

I wonder if there's some rules against student-athletes being on the banner (yes, we all know it is Denard on the banner, but I feel it's just perfectly set so that his likeness is not featured).

I know MGoBlog received cease and desist's from UM for using the block M logo and/or the winged helmet, so there are rules.  This ain't 'Nam.
