OT: Kanye West

Submitted by MichiganStudent on
This is way off topic and normally I wouldn't post something like this, but I was just checking my facebook and everyones status was about Kanye West and the MTV VMA's show. I figured someone on here would care... All I've got to say is Kanye is a d-bag asshole for doing this. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=knNcfUkTAso

I just learned about this here, few minutes ago. I watched the video, and what he did was so wrong. He could have expressed his opinion by giving an interview tomorrow, or discussing it with Larry King, or writing a diss song... you name it. Then, I just checked MTV's website and it turns out Beyonce won three awards, including Best Video of the Year. AND she wasn't even a nominee for the award Swift won. WTF Kanye??? Both wrong and embarrasing. P.S. I'm a big fan of his music.

mean a god damn thing. True rap legends aren't defined by album sales......90% of the supposed rap/hip hop that is on the radio is complete garbage. Album Sales mean that he has a big bank account. Kanye West is a great producer - my respect for him flew out the window the second he opened his mouth and started rapping. Seriously, his charades are getting old...fuck Kanye West.

don't mean anything? if you can't sell any albums then no one's listening to you. if no one's listening to you, how can you be a rap legend? i don't think he views himself a rap legend for that matter either, you two would likely be in agreement that he isn't one

Rabacks right. Album sales just mean you're more popular but the most popular doesnt always mean the best. Nelly, 50 Cent, Kanye, and the rest can sell millions of albums but by the "Hip Hop Community" most people will tell you they fuckin suck. Most of those album sales go to people who dont know a damn thing about Hip Hop. I consider myself a Hip Hop head. Kanye can produce the hell out of an album but lyrically...his shit is gar-bage. He will never be on the level of Nas, Jay Z, Mos Def, Rakim, Guru, Immortal Technigue, Slug, Murs, Big Boi & Andre 3000 and fallen legends Biggie, Pac, Big L, and Pun. You'll also notice half the people I've listed wont sell as many albums as Lil Jon or Shawty Lo but they will lyrically beat them. Either way...I think Kanye has some female tendencies.

dude, lyrically kanye is way more talented than a lot of those guys you mentioned. besides the big 2, who i don't think many have even came close to, he's up there with jay z, nas, and outkast. i'd argue that nas is very overrated and jay z a little as well but that's for another day. but listen to murs, slug, or immortal technique (immortal technique, really?) and they aren't as talented (a lot of stupid references to bacardi, L's, etc.). Do I like them? yeah, but kanye is a better all-around artist. just because someone has the 'underground' label doesn't mean that they are more talented. it's annoying when people actually think that. and you mentioned Pun, c'mon. of all the people you could've said that were more talented than Kanye, you think of Big Punisher? As a 'Hip Hop Head' I'd expect better than that.

"So we can finally fly off into NASA" I rest my case. Compare that to, say, Nas's "I Gave You Power," one of the most amazing rap songs lyrically in which he raps from the viewpoint of a gun (it's mindblowing IMO). Don't get me wrong: I like Kanye's music--I love College Dropout and a bit of Late Registration--but he's not the best lyricist, and I think he knows it despite his arrogance. Graduation was meh and I didn't even bother with his album(s?) after that. Sometimes he's on, but he certainly can't hold a candle to Nas and Jay-Z, two of rap's greatest living lyricists, or greats like anyone in the Wu-Tang, Talib, etc. Side note: Eminem is great but sometimes his rhymes are off, kind of like Luda who just can't rhyme period. Otherwise he's a pretty good lyricist. Apparently he actually is one hell of a battler in real life. Good call on Murs. I have two albums by him and he just isn't so good. I like the song "To a Black Boy," I got Murray's Revenge and I thought he was supposed to be better. I got Murs for President for like $5 at a liquidation sale but he just doesn't have it. I want to like it but it's a little grating to listen to him try. I don't listen to that much Big Pun, but IIRC he was actually a pretty good lyricist.

Sriously did you just say that? Big Pun's "Capital Punishment" is classic! Ask anybody that appreciates Hip Hop. Kanye is decent but he is no where near a top lyricist. Shit man his verses are just so stupid. Man "Swagger Like Us" and "Forever"? Seriously he gets murdered on both. Nas is overrated? You just lost all credibility you didn't have. And Immortal Technique isnt a "Bacardi & L" man. He's on politics and story telling. Kanye's best album couldnt hold a light to Capital Punishment, The Big Picture or ATLiens. He has so many female tendencies...Kanye's a bitch.

You are my new best MgoBlog friend. Those rappers you quoted are real hip hop legends, especially my favorite, Big L. I also agree that Kanye has some female tendencies. I believe he likes to play the skin flute and orders tube steak for dinner every night. My opinion is that he is a racist against caucasians as well.

I really have to check out Big L. Did he do tracks with Gang Starr and Nas? I remember WillyWill raving about him. Re: Kanye being racist, I was actually thinking the same thing but was hesitant to say it. It can be speculated for sure. Some of his songs contain conspiratorial accusations such as Reagan introducing crack to the black community to bring down the Black Panthers. That's not necessarily a racist thing of him to say, but I think it could give an indication of where his feelings might be. Other songs portray white women as exclusively being sex objects. Now, many rap and rock songs portray women of all races as sex objects, but perhaps the case could be made that Kanye takes it to another level. The Taylor Swift thing could be due to his feeling that a white country singer could not possibly make as much as a cultural impact as an R&B singer. A big part of it is that he is incapable of accepting that people have differing tastes from his, but I would be a bit surprised if that was the only reason that he got up there. This might be an important detail: did he have anything to do with that Beyonce song/video? Also, props to Beyonce for bringing Swift up on stage afterward. It might have been a bit awkward, but it was nice of her. She seemed to feel really bad about it.

Why is everyone who thinks it was funny or, more importantly, though that he was right, getting downvoted? It's not like they took the microphone from Taylor Swift; it happened no matter what they say. Anyway, this seems. . .I don't know. I honestly had no idea anyone watched the VMA's anymore. Seems like a completely dead idea; no one watches MTV for music videos anymore. MTV must be very thankful that every single one of my friends' status updates on facebook is about their show.

I did, but I didn't think it would be so blatant. Anyway, my point was, it wouldn't surprise me at all to find this was planned, at least partially. MTV is absolutely that low, as an enterprise, and Kanye would be so on board to do something ridiculous.

credibility with his rambling, incoherent diatribe during the Hurricane Katrina relief concert. This only furthers that reality. Its unfortunate, because the man does make good music.
