SB delivers MSU a 11-2 Mercy-Rule Thumping; Wins 2nd game 8-7 for the Sweep
The SB Team headed to East Lansing today for a double header. The first game is a make up from yesterday's postponement due to cold weather. Today, the 1st game was delayed due to a heavy snow squal in the area. The first pitch was about 3pm as the temperature warmed slightly to 40F.
The game was close for the first 4 innings. Then in the top of the 5th, the M bats started to warm up. Sierra Romero continued her hot streak by going long for a Grand Slam in a 6-run inning. We scored 3 more runs in the top of the 6th inning for the 11-2 lead. Sparty could not do anything in the bottom of the 6th; preserving the mercy-rule win for the Good Guys.
Sierra Romero finished 1 for 1 with 4 RBIs and 2 runs scored. She received an intentional walk as well. Ashley Lane went 3 for 5 with 3 RBIs. Kelsey Susella went 2 for 2 with 2 RBIs and 2 runs scored.
Sara was the starting pitcher but was relieved in the 3rd by Haylie. Sara gave up 2 runs (1 ER) on 4 hits. She struck out 4 and walked none in 3.1 innings of work. Haylie gave up 0 runs and 1 hits. She struck out 4 and walked none. Haylie was credited with the win.
Michigan leads the Big Ten in team batting average. Sierra Romero lead the Big Ten in total bases and is in the top 5 in batting average. She leads the league in runs scored as well. This is due primarily to Caitlin's hot bat pushing Romero home.
What a difference a year makes when we were in the middle to bottom of the Big Ten in offense. We are 3rd overall in the league in pitching.
MSU was 2nd in the league heading into this weekend with a 7-2 record. This is somewhat misleading because MSU has not played ohio, Nebraska, Minny or NW yet. I stand by my prediciton that MSU will finish in the bottom half of the Big Ten.
The second game will start shortly and I expect another mercy-rule win. If so, this will make a mercy-rule sweep. We have not done that in over 3 years.
What threat?
msu.mercy rule.thumping.drake harris. what a weekend for the Spartys.
State came close in men's tennis this year but Michigan still won on the road 4-3. Good effort!
to see the overall varsity records this year. MSU power-house women's basketball team let Spartys down this year when we beat them. I would beat that of all the varsity team sports, we won over 90% of them. Sparty is on a down-ward trent for sure.

I look at it a little differently. I compare team by team. So in men's sports we are 5-0-2 and women's we are 7-1. Overall comparing team sports we are 12-1-2 against sparty.
I will dig a little deeper as there are more than 15 total varsity sports.
And yes, I avoided a few sports. Ones that didn't have any head to head meetings I didn't include. And I may have also just missed a couple.
I just used mgoblue.com and the schedule link to each sport.
Either way, it's looking good for the team in Maize and Blue.

...football and rowing. Football's 12-10 win and rowing's sweep vs. Iowa and MSU on 30 Mar make it 6-0-2 in men's sports and 8-1 in women's sports in 2012-13.
None of this means anything because you know we cheat and we're paying players just like Ohio State and the entire SEC, while MSU remains the last bastion of fair play in college athletics.

Congrats to the team and anytime UM beats Sparty it makes me think, I guess laying in the weeds just isn't getting it done.
Actually, Romero was intentionally walked her first 3 at-bats; she had hit a grand slam in Friday's slug fest. Anyway, when she cam up to bat with the bases loaded they pitched to her and she hit her grand slam. Her next at bat, she was also intentionally walked.
However, in game 2, they are pitching to her - at least for now.
She is a stud hitter, and only a freshman.
Not 21-1? Not good enough. /s
Life delivers MSU a mercy-rule thumping today.
today is tied up 7-7 going into the bottom of the 7th. Ashley Lane hit 2 bombs, Kelsey hit one and Lawrence hit one. Haylie started and Sara came in relief.
Any thumping of MSU is a good thumping. Even on the recruiting trail. ;-)
Life sucks for Sparty fans today. Wish it could be like this every day.
It is.
Is there a sport they are better than us at? football no basketball no hockey no baseball no softball no lacrosse they don't have a team swimming no
by a score of 8-7 in 8 innings.
Coach mixed up the batting order today. She had everyone move up a slot which put Lyndsay in the 9 hole while Colie batted Lead Off and Romero batted #2.
Michigan leads the Big Ten in Team Batting Average and third in overall Pitching. Romero is in the top 5 in 8 offensive categories.
Sara continues to play DP when she is not pitching. She is hitting very well.
Despite my relative lack of interest in softball, there is just something about MGoSoftball's posts that brighten my day.
+1 to you, Good Sir.
Softball has been the most consistant winning team on campus over the past 15 years. Coach has done a World Class job in building an empire in the softball world.
Think about it. What Southern California young lady would want to come to AA and its lovely -20F winter days just to play a little softball? They want to play for Coach. She is the Bo, Joe Pa, Petino, Woody, and the Bear Bryant of college softball.

Was worried for awhile there but had a feeling they would pull it out in game 2 of the DH.
The closest team to Michigan in the standings is 3 games behind.
