Porcello is looking pretty sharp. He's getting a lot of weak ground balls.
Like clockwork. Gave up one earned run if the first five. Then...
Top 6th: Toronto |
- A. Dirks in left field |
- M. Cabrera singled to shallow center |
- J. Bautista singled to left, M. Cabrera to second |
- E. Encarnacion doubled to shallow left, M. Cabrera scored, J. Bautista to third |
- D. Downs relieved R. Porcello |
- M. DeRosa hit for A. Lind |
- M. DeRosa doubled to shallow left, J. Bautista and E. Encarnacion scored |
Three earned runs in the sixth, in which he recorded no outs.
Can still get the win.
Almost there...
you see that terrible video they just showed, in which the high school girl asked porcello to the prom? this stuff needs to end.
Yeahh, that's embarrassing.
On the bright side, I saw the one girl with Porcello's shirt and number 48. I thought the 21 looked odd for some reason.
Damn you Villarreal, throw strikes!
Time to bring Marte up and send sir walks-alot down.
he needs a good defensive infield behind him to become anything more than average which this team will never have while he is here and its the reason why I've wanted him dealt for awhile now. Despite my underwhelming view of Porcello, I'm still surprised DD couldn't deal him for a an average closer or short stop given his age and relatively low salary.
it's seems every year Dombrowski leaves some glaring hole. 2007 we get all these bats and no pitching. Then we get pitching but get rid of Polanco so we have no second base. Then we add fielder last year and add torii hunter this year but the bullpen falls apart then goes with closer by committee.
And then he goes out one off-season and trades away Cameron Maybin and Andrew Miller for Miguel Cabrera. Dombrowski completely sucks.

with the namecalling and personal negativity. It's counterproductive and generally makes the board worse than it needs to be. If you think his statement is illogical, point out where it's illogical instead of calling him an idiot, just like 99% of disagreements on this site.
Especially when obvious sarcasm is obvious. Maybin and Miller have both done nothing. Cabrera is Cabrera.
....is contagious. Sorry, but I guess I should've included the dreaded "/S" tagline to my post.
I hate it when people have these knee-jerk reactions claiming Dombrowski has completely sucked at every move, every year. He negotiated one of the biggest trade heists of the century by getting Cabrera for what amounted to nothing. Nothing. Sure, we had to take on Dontrelle Willis for a few years, but we have Miguel Cabrera and gave up virtually nothing! Genius move.
Also, everyone in the bullpen has kinda stunk this year. If they had a true closer in the fold right now, does that mean Villareal, Dotel, Coke, and Benoit are automatically lights-out through the first 8 games? That's kinda illogical thinking, too.
way ahead of the game.
How many bullpens in major league baseball are rock solid?
Every MLB team has weaknesses, even the ones with huge payrolls (See Boston, NYY, LAA).
Personally, I don't think our bullpen is all that weak. Coke, Albuquerque, and Benoit are good relievers and Downs, Smyly and Dotel are solid. Villareal needs to hit the road - he has given up 8 earned runs, and the rest of our bullpen combined has given up 11. Outside of a dominant closer, our bullpen is fine.
you cannot ignore the issues in the bullpen. We got to the world series in 2006 without Cabrera. We got there with Jamie Walker, Zumaya, and as terrifying as Todd Jones was, he still managed to get outs. . . I love that we have Miggy, that was a great move to get him. But ignoring the obvious after last season is as equally unimpressive as getting Cabrera was impressive. . .
And how did we get to the world series last year? Jamie Walker? Nope...
I was skimming through the stats to date, and although the season is barely a week old, here are some of the quick stats all the same for the Tigers bullpen (using Baseball-Reference here):
SO/BB ratio: 1.85
WHIP: 1.717 (team WHIP is 1.353)
ERA: 6.82
Hits / 9 Innings: 9.55
Walks / 9 Innings: 5.91
SO / 9 Innings: 10.91
Although the Tigers bullpen to date accounts for half of the earned runs (again, young season), it is responsible fo 41% of the team's strikeouts and actually has a higher SO / 9 Innings ratio than the cumulative pitching staff number (8.7).
