College kids going to be college kids. I remember shooting off illegal fireworks in the middle of Ann Arbor after a Pistons championship.

Looking down your nose doesn't solve anything.

After the game me and a friend were completely depressed and talked a bit about how it's bizarre people do this sort of thing after a loss. I mean, we had no energy to even get out of our chairs, much less run outside and burn things. I could see things getting out of hand after a crazy win, but a loss? It took me a half hour to get out of my seat.

for the record, people burned things in the streets a couple times a year when I was at Michigan from 2003-2007, especially on Michigan Ave right off of East U.

Close your eyes, imagine you are 18 again, and drunk, VERY drunk. Put yourself in your college living room. There's an old couch in the corner that no one really uses because one of your roomate passed out and vomited all over it. And before that, another roommate had sex on it with a chunky girl that wasn't worthy of his bed. After the loss, you are angry, irrational and have a lighter. You find others in a similar mental state to help take the couch out on the street. You take some vodka and sprinkle it over the couch (you clearly don't need anymore) flick the lighter a few times and when it first lights up the flames consume your eyes and for a moment you evolve backwards into a caveman who has just seen fire for the tirst time.

Get over it. It happens. If you've never been drunk and done something stupid or irrational, I suggest trying it once. If you have, then realize that absolutely no thought goes into lighting anything on fire, so why put any thought into criticizing or looking down on it.

Why? I've actually never done that before, nor do I have a desire to. I don't understand why anyone would want to burn things in the street as a reaction to an outcome of a sporting event, nor do I think there's any justifiable rationale for it. It's stupid.

I'm pretty sure burning anything and embarrassing the whole University never sprung to mind.

I'm not saying it's any better or worse today. Then then got tear gassed and pushed back by the riot shields.  But when it started getting to that point, that's when even my drunken lizard brain said "it's time to leave."

Someone who thinks that's normal has a problem, because it's not.

I was aghast last night at the arena when some dipshit muscle-bound undergrads were starting shit with a dad with little kids. I saw the dad go get security and the first two were told to leave. They left. Then the third one started shit again and almost had to be manhandled out of the stands.

Like what the fuck?

Obviously I don't know what happened and maybe the dad with the little kids was the aggressor, but somehow I doubt it.

What an embarrassment.

Next time they decide to set things on fire, let's hope it's themselves.

When your fanbase is numbered over a million and your enrollment is over 42,000 chances are you'll have a few weak links in the human chain.

Frankly it was disgusting last night.  I stopped to offer a family a ride because the street was turning into a giant mob scene/shoving match and people went after the mother and father as they were helping the kids into my car (for that matter consider that mom and dad felt that a ride from a stranger was safer than walking on a street in Ann Arbor).  It reached the point where I had to push my jacket back and display the fact I had a handgun just to get people to back off the parents so they could get into the car and we could get out of there.  A couple people on the street attempted to help as well and one of them got punched in his face for his trouble.

Beyond that I saw about four fights/shoving matches between people where each party was wearing Michigan gear.  WTF is wrong with people...?

This doesn't happen when we win or lose bowl games or the Frozen Fozen, but basketball always seem to lead to this, State and South U turns into dipshit city.  It sucks because frankly the way people behave just makes it clear that the University can't play up the accomplishments of the basketball team without risking bad behavior.  After we win or lose against tOSU, everyone can have an awesome night drinking on the town, but after a key basketball game it looks like AAPD needs to don the riot gear and go all jack booted thug just to keep things under a moderate level of control.

Why doesn't this happen with bowl games or hockey?

Bowl games: are held at the beginning of January. It's cold, sure. It's also winter break.

Hockey: most people just don't care very much. Seriously, if peoplpe rioted after a Frozen Four loss, most bystanders would have to ask why they were rioting. (Note: it probably isn't always possible to get a clear answer from a rioter to the question, 'so, what's this riot about?'

Overall driving through the city AA seemed fine, but about 15 minutes after the same, the Packard/S State area was a giant cluster fuck with at least one right on the side streets right to the east of State.  I saw three fire trucks and five polices go hauling through there in the convoy.
