Morning after blizzard

Submitted by 1464 on

I know that there are going to be so many Michigan fans waking up this morning and trying to digest what happened last night.  Let's consolidate all the philosophic waxing into this thread.  Topics of interest:

- Based on baseless speculation, who is going to be suiting up for the basketball team next year?

- On a scale from one to Nickleback, how bad did the refs suck?

- What were some of the keys to the game?  Should Burke have come back in the first half?  Should we have stayed small with Albrect in place of a cold Hardaway?  What would you have done differently?

- On a scale from one to Nickleback, how bad did the refs suck?

but I'm so proud of this team. Amazing to watch. They had way more heart than I gave them credit for. They were literally 2-3 plays from being national champions with a slew of freshmen. Awesome year

Refs were bad both ways but the calls they missed or made wrongly against were all crucial ones. Even when they called a few fouls for us it was a ticky tack one that stopped us on a break or from a easy bucket.

Mis-assigning the Hancock foul was not a judgment call gone wrong, it was a flat out fuck up that completely altered the personnel on the floor and was inexcusable. I don't feel like I watched the game I should have down the stretch and I will bitch about it every single time I talk about this game for the rest of my life.

It truly messed up the game. Hancock was the up fake that set down McGary. Hancock hit the dagger three. Hancock iced 2 free throws late.

He should have been on his butt like McGary was until about 2 mins left. Would have been a completely different game. Schadenfreude and whatever but I really feel like we got fleeced. I think Trey deserved better.

I cant help but respect this man's outlook on life and competition in general. He understands that these games are played for fun and he also realizes that helping raise these young men to be contributing members of society is more important than a national championship.

Gotta love this man's approach to the sports psychology aspect of coaching. The pre game and halftime speech, along with the quick halftime interview, really shed light on why our players can make it through rough stretches and play so well FOR eachother. His positivity has me feelin great about where our program is currently.

That game should have been a joy to watch last night. Instead, it was like watching an impacted molar get cut out of someone's mouth. The officiating was bad for both teams. But it was really...REALLY...bad.

That said, it was a great year. The implications on recruiting will be enormous. This will be a season that Michigan can build on for years to come.

...no excuses for the missed goal-tending and the fairly blocked shot...but Michigan missed a lot of free throws and committed silly turnovers that ultimately cost them the game...I also think that Burke needed to come in much sooner, that was a dumb gamble by Beilein in the end of the 1st half that allowed L-ville to go on their run becuse LeVert had no clue what he was doing out there...all in all a tough loss but a great season

What was worse was the solid cross check by Dieng on Spike that was considered a screen. Heck I thought we learned from the Nix foul at the end of the season that the flagrant -1 foul was called when the fouler outweiged the foulee by 100 pounds. We can't even count on that I guess.

I don't think you can really say we would have done any better with Burke in more in the first half. Spike really went crazy. In the second half I would have liked to see LeVert in more for Spike just for his defense. We really struggled to get stops and rebounds.

Even though we lost, I still believe that overall Michigan had better talent. But it looked like that some of the issues people seen throughout the year, like youth and lack of toughness, re-appeared in the second half. Our D was absolutely shredded in the second half. It just sucks because it looked like these things had dissappeared in the run to the finals.

I'd like to see Hardaway return next year. I think this team could benefit from some upperclassmen leadership. It could be possible for this team to make another deep run next year.

We need to get over the ref thing.

Yes, the refs impacted the Michigan - Louisville game.

Yes, the refs impacted the Louisville - Wichita St. game.

And yes, the refs impacted the Michigan - Syracuse game.

What does that tell us?  The refs are going to impact the game.  It's going to happen. You know this before you step foot on the court.  It's unavoidable.

Is it because there is a conspiracy against one team or another?  No, it's because there is a lot of subjectivity and judgment calls to be made in a fast moving chaotic game.

Every call goes against one of the teams.  Every team that loses a game by a few points can look back to a couple of calls that "lost them the game".  Every one.

The Burke foul on the blocked shot, a legitimately bad call, happened with five minutes left in the game.  Not five seconds.  It put us down 5 points.  There was plenty of time left to get some stops and even up the game.  But we could not get the stops.  That's why we lost.

I wonder if we had kept Burke in if we could have kept the lead going into the half...  but that said, Louisville was just plain better than us and it showed as the game went on.

Burke should leave, anyone who doesn't believe he is gone is a little naive.  Hardaway may still leave and there could be a surprise with GRIII but I doubt it.

What I would like to see is GRIII in the 3 spot next year where he can create some huge mismatches...

Outside of the burke block shit call I think everything else was pretty evenly called.  There were at least two louisville steals that were called fouls.

For me everything after Kansas was icing on the Cake.  And it was a good fucking cake.

it really was icing on the cake after stealing the game from Kansas...and I also agree that Burke should have played in the final 4 minutes of the first half (their run would have assuredly been limited to not getting wide-open 3's as Burke would have slowed the game down)...but I disagree on your point that L-ville is better than Michigan, more experienced yes, but Michigan could have just as easily won that game as they lost it...I am inceredibly proud of this team and take some solace in knowing that all of you are in the same misery-filled boat as I am....but hats off to a great season and i am looking forward to next year regardless who goes or stays

First, thank you to the entire Michigan men's basketball team for a terrific season. I was lucky enough to see every game (except the regular season ending loss to Indiana) and this team transformed itself once the tourney started.

- My prediction for next year: Trey and THJ leave for the NBA. We are in good hands with GRIII, Spike, Mitch, Nik, Jordan, Caris, etc.

- Refs were pure Nickelback last night. Unbelievable. The two "phantom" fouls by Trey, and the clutching and grabbing that was not called... Unfortunate...

- Keys: Two "phantom" fouls on Trey. Handcock's 4 3-pointers at the end of the first half...

We'll be just fine, folks. Lots of big names leaving the B1G this summer...

The game itself was too fast for the officials. Great game peppered with some awful calls. That said, the first half until Hancockapalooza was so much fun to watch.
