Russell Bellomy Tears ACL Comment Count

Brian

perrycolor[1]You can decommit from Purdue all you want, Russell Bellomy, but Perry the ACLephant will find you and destroy your ligaments.

Michigan redshirt sophomore quarterback Russell Bellomy has suffered an ACL tear in spring practice, TheWolverine.com has learned and U-M has confirmed.

Bellomy is currently the only scholarship quarterback on the roster other than Devin Gardner. Shane Morris arrives in fall, and just about can't redshirt unless Michigan is going to throw a walk-on out there in the event of a Gardner ding.

Michigan's depth chart is really feeling the absence of a quarterback in last year's class. One per year, every year, is what Michigan wants to do from now on; let's hope they do so.

Dont understand why everyone is so pissed....did people not see the nebraska game?  That was one of the biggest let downs I have ever seen.  Dude couldn't hit a broad side of the barn  from 5 yards away.

Alright, how does a back-up QB tear an ACL in spring practice?  No one should even be touching him.  And once again the ravages of the depth chart after RR rear it's ugly head.  Since when should an injury to a back-up QB who you expected no significant time out of be so significant?

Oh, and seriously, STOP TEARING ACLs!

Given that he had Denard, Devin, an Bellomy on campus, and a great 2013 QB in Shane Morris already committed during the 2012 recruiting cycle, it was a gamble to skip taking a QB that year and get some much needed depth elsewhere on the roster.  And depending on how Morris shapes up once he gets on campus, it may still be the right decision.

True, it was, but if there had been any semblence of an appropriatly balanced roster when Hoke walked in, they would have.  But we had no OL, no DL and no secondary.  Those are also important poitions that needed bodies.  They had some guys they would have taken, but I think when it came down to it, it was a decision between getting players they liked at other positions of dire need, or getting just 'a guy' to take a QB spot.  They took a little bit of a gamble, but even if they did take a QB, we could be lamenting the fact that we were missing an important DL body or something.  There were just no great options considering the vast number of players we needed to restock the roster.  And that last part is on RR.

ACL tears happen a lot just from planting incorrectly. I don't know if anyone remembers this, but there was that Eastern QB a few years ago that just dropped back, planted, and fell to the ground with a perfect pocket around him. He tore his ACL and that was the last game he played in (he was a senior). It's kind of like the injury over the weekend; sometimes shit just happens.

EDIT:

Just looked it up. His name was Andy Schmitt. While looking it up, it sounds like he hurt his knee on a previous play, but thought he was ok to play on it. On this play, he just drops, plants, tears his ACL, and drops to the ground.

Well, it was unlikely that Morris could have redshirted anyways with only 2 other QB's on the roster.  This leaves us terribly thin though, especially with a starting quarterback that will do plenty of running/scrambling.

Ability at scrambling, and I was excited to hear how he was watching tape of kapernick and talking with Borges about it. Borges was leaning towards designed QB runs still while bellomy was healthy. I'm not so sure he'll keep those in now, and I bet he's going to tell him when he does run, get down or out before he gets hit. This kinda sucks, because I think he could easily put up 500 + yards this season on the ground if he didn't have to be extra causious of injury.

I didn't say we didn't have any players on our roster who played QB in high school.  But would Desmond Morgan really be better than one of our walk-ons who has been practicing at QB?  Brian Cleary was a 2* recruit with a scholarship offer from CMU, and I don't recall Morgan being recruited as a QB by anybody.

I wouldn't burn Morris' redshirt for garbage time. Looks like Devin could break some passing records and the stable of RBs could really get worked in some of the nonconference games and lower Big Ten teams.

Hope Bellomy has a good surgery and recovery. He's unfairly judged by the Nebraska disaster, which is actually one of the few blunders by Hoke and Borges. Not saying he could be as good as Devin, but I think he could at least be serviceable.
