Give thoughts or prayers for Louisville player Kevin Ware

The most gruesome injury I have ever seen, hands down.  If you didn't see it live or on a reply, I honestly do not recommend it.  Get well soon, big guy.  

EDIT: Players on the the court fell down and some were in tears.  Happened in front of the UL bench and reports are that some UL players literally couldn't hold their stomach.  Pitino wiped away tears.

Kid still managed to give his team a short pep talk before they took him away on the stretcher.

I couldn't see it from the first few angles, but I didn't know what I was looking for at that time.  I think they only used the worst angle once and then only showed players' reactions after that.  

 

Edit: Clearly I am blind or wasn't paying close enough attention.  Good for me I guess.  Carry on.

Prayers out to him. I think we've all been thrilled/amazed by the quick recovery that Fitz is making and I wish nothing less for Kevin Ware. Hope to see him out on the court next year.

Basically, the Lattimore injury was hard to tell what was going on so a lot of it was in your head. This leaves no room for imagination. It just happens and it's bad. In terms of viewing it I'd say this is worse than the Lattimore injury but the Lattimore injury was a worse injury to have.

that we don't see more injuries like that in a sport that constantly has athletes landing awkwardly on hardwood. Lord have mercy on Kevin Ware.

Rehab will be just regaining strength and endurance from weight-bearing and activity restrictions. Bone will heal fully in 3 months in a young, healthy, non-smoker, presuming there isn't any infection preventing fracture union. He may have anterior knee pain from the nail insertion site as his only lingering after effect.

But I've seen more than my fair share of mangled bodies and gruesome injuries and my guess is he'll be able to fully recover. As bad as it looks, it's still just two broken bones and a severe laceration. Given that he would have had immediate top notch medical attention, any vascular issues would be mitigated and it's doubtful there was catastrophic damage to the connective tissue. The wild card would be the extent of nerve damage. I hope for the best for this kid.

I did suffer a "clean" tibia and fibula break about three years ago that was similar, but not as gruesome as Ware's. The doctors inserted an inter-medial nail, a long titanium rod, through the middle of the broken tibia, secured two screws at near the knee and two more near the ankle. The surgeon seriously goes to town on the leg like a carpenter, drilling, hammering, and screwing to secure the bone. The fibula is small and doesn't bear much weight, so they just reset the bone and let it heal on its own. I was in an aircast boot for only 2 months and walking without crutches after soon after. At the time, I was a collegiate athlete in great shape so that, combined with being young and having access to world class doctors and physicians dramatically reduced my recovery time. If it was in fact a clean break, and he doesn't have major setbacks, he could be back to near 100% in a year. God bless him and his doctors.

You are correct on the open reduction; however, If it was a closed injury it wouldn't be an open reduction. The only thing that would make it an ORIF is the fact that was open and they would have to debride/irrigate the bony ends and likely use that to their advantage to get a better reduction.

This injury is very similar to Fitz, open tibia fracture.  Treatment is a titanium rod inserted through the knee, across the fracture to the ankle.  ORIF as stated above.  

 

With regards the severity, this injury is easier to rehab from than a ligamentous injury (Lattimore).  This injury may look gruesome but it actually has a very good prognosis.

I would expect him back next season.  Fitz is on track for a return this fall.
