baseball: M wins 1 of 3 vs Minn

Submitted by snowcrash on

The Michigan baseball team (now 11-14) hosted Minnesota (17-12) this weekend, and lost 2 of 3 games despite outscoring the Gophers 13-8 overall.

Minny won the first game 3-1. Logan McAnallen and Ben Ballentine combined to allow just 1 earned run, but M got just 5 runners on base all day.

Today there was a doubleheader. M punished the Gophers 11-3 in the first game, pounding out 16 hits including 4 by Travis Maezes and 3 by Cole Martin (including his first HR of the season) and Michael O'Neill. Evan Hill went 7 innings for the win.

Unfortunately the second game today resembled Friday's game, as the Wolverines could only get 6 men on base and lost 2-1. Maezes and Zach Zott each had 2 hits. Trent Szkutnik managed to scatter 9 hits over 6.2 innings despite not striking any Gophers out.

Biondi's been out for a couple weeks (other than pinch-running) with a sprained thumb. Bakich had said earlier in the week that his cast would come off on Thursday, but that didn't happen.

This team doesn't have much margin for error, so his absence has really hurt.

What a great start Evan Hill is off to. He's now 4-1 and has already won two Big Ten Freshman of the Week awards.
