CONNOR JAEGER WINS THE 1650YD NCAA NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP!
1-4-6 in 1650!
HUGE start to the evening session!
EDIT: finished 1-3-4 in final heat, but standings based on time, so 1-4-6 (and 9)
Picked up 57 points in the 1650, to none for California (1st, 4th, 6th, 9th)
Lead now 393-301.5 for Michigan
Final Results including the earlier heats. Michigan takes 1-4-6-9. Cal takes nothing.
Michigan has 393 points
Cal still has 301.5
Cal's max 434.5
Michigan's Non-DQ Min 462
Let the countdown begin
As long as Michigan has no one in the back final, nice to see a Wisconsin swimmer have their first NCAA win since, what, 1959?!?! Is that really what they said?
Cal takes 3rd. Lowering their Max to 430.5
37.5 points left for Michigan to clinch.
No way! 57 points in swimming at the NC is crazy! Wow! congrats Jaeger national champion in the 500 and the 1650! Missed the record by 3 seconds, but he is only a junior, so look out next year.
Nice side story, Wiscy swimmer wins the 200 back, their first national champion in 54 years. And my Alma Mater Eastern Michigan came up 4th, Hurons, yes!
Michigan is now in firm control..Go Blue!
You're dating yourself. Of course, so am I.
You got me! Class of 94'
Heh. Ann Arbor Huron '89, Michigan '93.
I had a few HS friends who were in band at EMU who were PISSED about the switch to Eagles.
EMU surveyed 700 Huron Indians 5 said they were offended, so they switched. Go figure. EMU was just a job to me. Commuted for 4 years. I've always loved Michigan, but just wasn't smart enough to get in; hence, the "UM Reject" moniker. I can laugh about now. I still have my rejection letter. It reads like, "Thank you for applying, you weren't even close. Buh-Bye."
Hurons forever! I mean, the eagles, I am still pissed skyline is the eagles, is everyone going to just be eagles?
Skyline should bethe Salamanders and Eastern should be the Walleyes, anything but the F'ing eagles.
Is your first name Eric?
I swam at Andover, class of 86, and I think I swam next to you in the 1986 Michigan H.S state championships (500 yd Free) if you're who I think you are.

but I'm not Eric. Didn't swim in high school.
Ahh, Gotcha. Thanks. It was a shot in the dark, I know.

I recall " Emus" being in the candidacy for potential mascot.
Talk about a loser program. This is wisconsin's only NCAA individual champion since 1959.
Is it fair to say that Swimming & Diving is lopsided like women's basketball is? Seems nuts to have one team have like 3 of the top 7 swimmers in the country in a single event
I think that, like in track and field, some schools tend to be really strong in certain events, weaker in others. Michigan has traditionally been a strong distance swimming program; It's my understanding that Mike Bottom was hired in part because he had a strong sprint background.
I think it is more a case of tradition. Michigan has a long line of distance swimmers. Think of it like Penn St linebackers. They pull the best ones in year after year.
Bruno Ortiz in lane 8 in the 100 freestyle.
Michigan takes 8th and 16th
Cal takes 7th
Michigan has 405
Cal's Max is 422.5
18 points to go
tells me that we can clinch in the 200 fly - can someone confirm?
Michigan has 417 points after the 200 Breast
Cal has 362.5, but can only get to 409.5. Even if Michigan DQs in every event they will still win.
GO BLUE!!!!!
WOOO! I know zero about swimming, but NCAA champs sounds pretty dang good!
Champeeyunships! WOOOOOO BLUE!
Six of the top 18 NCAA teams are B1G teams! UM far and away the best.
Not that it matters a whole lot for the team title, but in the 200 fly:
Michigan goes 3-8-11
Kid from California ties Michael Phelps American record.
Current score: Michigan 446, California 388.5
400 free relay all that's left for M.
So does Michigan have this clinched?
Cal can get no more than 9 points in the last swimming event, and I don't think they have anybody in the platform diving finals.
Niether team had any divers qualify. That's an area Michigan hopes to improve on. They scored points in every swimming event except the 200 back. But there are also 3 diving events that we scored no points in, so we can get better still! Incoming class is strong but we lose 6 national qualifiers to graduation.
Still two events to go, but Michigan has it locked. Congratulations Men's Swim Team.
My brother lives in San Fran and shipped two wonderful portions of Pliny the Elder. The first one has been opened. YESSSSSSS!
Oh, and let's go Wichita State! Kick the crap out ohio
That's more NCs than any other M team, and just one less than football and hockey combined.
Go Blue!
NCAA only recognizes 12 of them sadly, but they can't take away what actually DID happen.
Mark Emmert doesn't like your pre-1937 titles.
If Alabama gets to count 37 national titles in football, we get to count 19 here
Don't forget the Princeton Tigers claim to 28 titles.
Including 1869. You know, when there were only two teams around. Princeton and Rutgers? Seriously, that happened.
recognize blatant cheaters, so who cares if they cannot recognize some of our champions.
Whether it's 19 or 12, Michigan has more NCs than any other school in swimming. Go Blue!
That is all.
Brian/Seth/Ace/somebody, we needz moar muppets!
First National Title since men's gymnastics back in 2010 right?
It's Great To Be A Michigan Wolverine!
Woo! Moar championships please!
So when do I get to see them celebrate and jump in the pool? I'm getting bored watching all these divers
After diving championships are over, the final swim of the night, the 400-yd freestyle relay is it.
Here we go! Last race up next!
That kid from USC is f'ing fast. Just swam the fast 100 yard relay split ever.
