Friday Night NCAAFB Thread - Colorado @ Toledo
Game's not for another couple hours, but it has schadenfreude written all over it. Hawkins guaranteed 10 wins this season, and he's already got one loss to in-state rival Colorado State. They play at Toledo tonight, which shouldn't be very good at all, but could be a tough game for the Buffaloes. Supposedly Toledo is a lot worse this year (lost 52-31 to Purdue last week), but Colorado is only a 3.5 point favorite from the lines I've seen.
Hawkins' kid is supposed to start at QB again, and their big running back prospect may or may not play this week. The guy was projected to be huge for them, but he was benched last week for poor pass blocking.
Being a Friday game, Toledo is on a day's less rest than normal, while the Buffaloes are even shorter. They played CSU on Sunday, giving them just 4 days to prepare.
So what do you think? Can Toledo pull off the upset?
Game is on ESPN at 9pm ET.

So make a comment on the GAME! Geeze!
September 12th, 2009 at 10:12 AM ^
was that necessary?
September 11th, 2009 at 11:12 PM ^
So jamiemac, did you wind up betting on Toledo? I hope you didn't talk yourself out of it.
September 11th, 2009 at 11:14 PM ^
UT's D looks beatable, but CU just shoots themselves in the foot every time they do something positive. And that's not often. Purdue must be pretty good. I really hope Purdue beats Oregon.
The Big 10 needs some key wins tomorrow, and a decent game from OSU. I don't expect them to win, but they really need to keep it respectable against the men of troy.
September 11th, 2009 at 11:17 PM ^
CU does not look very physical...their tackling sucks and the blocking on offense is not very strong. Ooh, they just scored on a pushoff like in that '98 Rose Bowl (that non-call precipitated the missing 2 seconds, so I kinda think WSU fans should shut up about the clock officiating.)
September 11th, 2009 at 11:19 PM ^
UT just keeps running right past them.
September 11th, 2009 at 11:21 PM ^
This is pathetic.
September 11th, 2009 at 11:23 PM ^
Seeing CU lose like this makes me mildly happy.
September 11th, 2009 at 11:24 PM ^
The DB interfered against the receiver and the guy still brought the ball in! That is the defining image of this game.
Hawkins is in big trouble. This is his fourth season; if he can turn it around he can get another year, but the team is just not playing hard.
September 11th, 2009 at 11:26 PM ^
Seriously. Toledo looks very good this year... but not that good. The offense, yes, but the defese shouldn't be just shutting them down like this.
September 11th, 2009 at 11:27 PM ^
Woo fake punt just to have an illegal substitution
September 11th, 2009 at 11:30 PM ^
Perplexingly terrible football. It's like the players just don't know what they're doing, none of them, and they're just kind of cantering around and shoving guys on the other team. On the short passing plays, the routes are run but the ball is mistimed and in the wrong place; the line is a sieve; the catching is miserable, etc. Depressing.
Poor Hawkins, man. For such a seemingly down-to-earth dude, he's really put a bad product on the field.
Also: how about these ultra-bored announcers, trying their best to keep into the game.
September 11th, 2009 at 11:36 PM ^
Whoops! That wasn't so hot. So 24-37 now?
September 11th, 2009 at 11:37 PM ^
break for Colorado - if they score a td here they are right back in it.
September 11th, 2009 at 11:37 PM ^
But...lost 5 straight. Sound like anyone you know?
PS: I am a Carr fan, but was ready for something new by the end of his tenure.
September 11th, 2009 at 11:38 PM ^
Doesn't exactly apply, but still...
EDIT: And of course, right when I post this, Colorado gets back in the game. Figures.
September 11th, 2009 at 11:37 PM ^
A sign of life for Colorado on the fumble/touchdown? Toledo's defense is terrible...their secondary is getting gashed again and again.
September 11th, 2009 at 11:38 PM ^
On a side note, why does Toledo have a big blue bouncing condom for a mascot?
September 11th, 2009 at 11:50 PM ^
It's a rocket. All of the students prefer the dude in the astronaut getup. More "Rocketeer".
September 11th, 2009 at 11:39 PM ^
CU's defense needs to prove they can get a stop.
September 11th, 2009 at 11:47 PM ^
Not so much...
September 11th, 2009 at 11:46 PM ^
QB draw on 3rd and 6 TO THE HOUSE.
Wow.
September 11th, 2009 at 11:46 PM ^
And there goes my bid for a comeback. QB run for the TD!
September 11th, 2009 at 11:54 PM ^
The way Colorado's offense is playing, I think they could still come back. Provided, of course, that their defense decides to...well...play.
EDIT: Oh...interception...never mind.
My timing is OFF tonight.
September 11th, 2009 at 11:47 PM ^
That is how you kill momentum. Wow
September 11th, 2009 at 11:47 PM ^
DENARD'D!!!
September 11th, 2009 at 11:48 PM ^
Opelt as Denard? I'll take that. That's a fast white man right there.
September 11th, 2009 at 11:47 PM ^
That's a good way to start the 4th quarter for Toledo. 60-some yard QB keeper for a touchdown. Got some momentum back.
September 11th, 2009 at 11:47 PM ^
Opelt has wheels, baby.
September 11th, 2009 at 11:49 PM ^
CU might not win a game all season. Their defense makes '08 Michigan look competent.
September 11th, 2009 at 11:50 PM ^
M's defense was pretty good in 08. It was the offense who was so terrible. The O's ineptitude lead to the D being too tired late in games.
September 11th, 2009 at 11:51 PM ^
We played last year?? I thought our season got cancelled after Boren ate all the footballs on his way out.
September 11th, 2009 at 11:50 PM ^
Hmmm, did a big play just happen? The 8 posts at the same time seem to indicate that it did.
September 11th, 2009 at 11:50 PM ^
Incredibly Surprising QB Draw lives here.
September 11th, 2009 at 11:51 PM ^
If not for some costly mistakes [Edit: by CU] at the wrong times, this game is a lot closer.
September 11th, 2009 at 11:51 PM ^
In the first half, Toledo's defense looked pretty good. In the second half, not so much.
Thought that's a nice interception.
September 11th, 2009 at 11:51 PM ^
It's not exactly like Toledo's playing perfectly either.
September 11th, 2009 at 11:53 PM ^
They are really bad (ha!).
So many missed tackles, missed assignments, etc.
I say this and sure enough UT intercepts a pass. Granted, it was a terrible pass and a total dead-duck.
September 11th, 2009 at 11:53 PM ^
Dare I ask if this is worse for Colorado than 2008 Toledo was for us?
September 11th, 2009 at 11:54 PM ^
Nothing was worse for anyone than 2008 Toledo was for Michigan.
Except for another game that, well, yeah...
September 11th, 2009 at 11:57 PM ^
Not even close. A few points:
1. Toledo looks really good this year. Last year they were terrible under a lame duck coach.
2. Toledo is beating Colorado. Last year, Michigan beat Michigan.
3. Toledo and Colorado have played before, some very storied, high energy games.
September 12th, 2009 at 12:00 AM ^
Alright, I guess I durst not ask.
September 12th, 2009 at 12:08 AM ^
While last year's game was atrocious, it is mitigated by being a competitive game when Michigan was undergoing a transition and an exceptionally crappy season. While Toledo is definitely better this year, they still are coming off a game where they were pummeled by Purdue (!). Furthermore, Colorado came into the season with high expectations. Finally, whenever a MAC team blows out a Big 12 team, there's a problem.
September 12th, 2009 at 12:15 AM ^
The MAC has been down for a couple of years now, but they are traditionally known as a "Giant Killer" conference, especially the higher profile, rich football history programs like Toledo, Ball State, and Central.
A few years ago, when Toledo Tom Amstutz was still the hot new coach on the block, Toledo was talking about leaving for the Big East to get a crack at the BCS.
September 12th, 2009 at 1:34 AM ^
I don't think that takes away from the fact that Toledo just beat the ever-loving shit out of Colorado. This is a hell of a statement and one way to say Colorado won't come close to contending in the Big 12 North.
September 11th, 2009 at 11:59 PM ^
is a terrible way to lose to another bad team. UT v2009 still could go on to do some things in the MAC. [Edit: Just thinking about it again, makes me throw up in my mouth.]
September 11th, 2009 at 11:56 PM ^
When was the last time you saw this many holding calls?
I swear about 65% of the penalties in this game have been for holding. Talk about undisciplined offensive lineman. Or just not very good.
September 12th, 2009 at 12:00 AM ^
RIP DAN HAWKINS
September 12th, 2009 at 12:02 AM ^
Toledo's D line may be bad, but their corners are freaking BALLHAWKS! HOLY CRAP!
