OT: SEC Basketball Complaining about Being Treated Like Mid-Major Conference
The SEC basketball coaches are bitching about being treated like a mid-major conference after playing like one:
Tennessee coach Cuonzo Martin predicted two weeks ago that the SEC would earn six bids.
Martin said the SEC's three bids were an ''embarrassment'' after the brackets were revealed, and he didn't back down from those comments Monday. He said Tennessee, Kentucky and Alabama are ''NCAA tournament teams'' that landed in the NIT.
''It's almost like a mid-major mentality in this league, when you've got your second-place team that doesn't get in the NCAA tournament,'' Martin said. ''This is a BCS league. It's one of the best leagues in America. That shouldn't happen.''
The SEC's non-conference performance indicates it actually wasn't one of the best leagues in the nation this season.
As the article goes on to point out, the SEC had losing records against all BCS conferences and performed worse than two mid-major conferences.
Maybe if they quit playing like mid-majors.
kidding...
doesn't really help them on the court.
Come on, don't group them in with the Mid-majors. It makes mid-major conferences look bad...
...but not really.
when there are "BCS" games played in college basketball you will be first to know.....
Don't try to explain this to an SEC fan. Ever been to a basketball game in the south? Half the crowd spends their time bitching about the team "not being set for the inbound", "fumbling" the ball to the other team, and screaming "HIT HIM!" on break-aways.
Like explaining hockey (or what a girlfriend is) to a Hawaiian...
I'll be here all night folks, tip jar is by the Diaries section.

So this is actually one of Brian's alter-egos. I had always wondered as much.
(in my best redneck voice) There are only two seasons: SEC Footbaw & Spring Practice!!!
go on all the talk shows about this! Rub the hurt in some more!
P.S. Dear Big Ten--don't screw the pooch.
That is the equivalent to finishing 5-6 and bitching that you didn't make it to a bowl over a MAC school...
I like the new avatar...a lot. Nice incorporation of the pink pony
The SEC isn't close to one of the best leagues in the country. Watch Alabama if you get the chance. They'd finish 10th in the Big Ten if everything broke right.
wrong sport, cuonzo
ps, i hated you at purdue
Cuonzo you had 64 chances to make your point. Sorry no sympathy.
Sparty tears taste just like SEC tears.
If you wanted in the tournament, Cuonzo, your team should have played better. Bitching about the results won't improve your team.
This is why people root for mid-majors.
I feel so fucking sorry for your conference.
This is funny. This is Nick Saban's opinion on getting the four "best" teams into a football playoff:
"I think somebody's a little self-absorbed and how it affects them and how they can best get somebody in the game all the time rather than getting the best four teams. I don't think that's fair to the fans and the people who really have made it known they really want to see the best four teams play in a playoff."
Now, this jackass from Tennessee is saying that the SEC deserves more teams because they're better than a mid-major conference? Puh-lease. SEC Hypocrites!!!
No need for any logic when it comes to a good SEC bashing...
Thanks, WolvinLA2, but you can keep your fairness. I'm irrationally lumping the SEC, its member schools, their coaches, and fans all together.
They can all kiss my ass.
That's cool. I'm of the mindset that they have enough legitimate stuff to bash them for that we don't need to make up extra stuff.
But I like your way too.
for comment, Stu Douglas simply dunked on Bruce Pearl and Counzo Martin had nothing else to say on the matter after that.
Oh that is just rich. Love it when the shoe is on the other foot!!
Funny how not being able to over-recruit nearly as much in basketball compared to football affects a conference's abilities.
But honestly, of those three teams listed maybe Kentucky has an argument, and that's kind of a stretch. It was a crap conference with only Florida being a legitimate top team. 3 bids looks rights to me.

in the first round of the NIT. NCAA was kind of a stretch.
SEC! SEC! SE...no? Not now?
If you belonged in the big tournament, why are your guys 10:1 against to even win the NIT?
AAAAAAAAAhahahahahaha. Fuck you, SEC.
doesn't translate to basketball? Must be some other variables to this football dominance thing.
Not saying all these comments won't prove to be true this year but given that the defending National Champs Kentucky hail from the SEC and B1G hasnt won one since 2000 we might not want to knock them TOO hard.
Oh, and while another SEC team Florida was winning it all in both 2006 & 2007 the B1G has lost it's last four NCAA Championship games.
Glass house meet rock.
Fun-sucker
That also proves what a lot of us say about winning football championships. Great teams win conferences. I believe a few years ago when UConn won the title the Big East had 9 teams in and UConn was the only one in the E8. That Florida team played in a very weak SEC, but was the best team. Alabama wins NC because they have the best football program, not because the SEC is so supreme. LSU lost to Clemson, Florida got crushed by Louisville, and SC should've been beat in their bowl games.
I don't like this argument.
First of all, the coach is talking about this year, so who won championships last year or 7 years ago doesn't really apply.
Second of all, he's talking about the depth of his conference, not how good the top teams are. If he were bitching that Florida should have deserved a 1 or 2 seed based on how top SEC teams perform in the tourney, your argument would hold water, but he's talking about the bubble teams. UK winning a national title doesn't saying anything about the 5th best team in the conference.
Lastly, I think using national championships to determine the strength of a conference is a bad indicator. Those seasons where USC was winning national championships (allegedly) the Pac 10 sucked. No one then thought the Pac 10 was good because USC was the best team in the country. And everyone agreed that the Big Ten sucked this year. If OSU wasn't on probation, played ND in the title game and won (which likely would have happened), is the Big Ten all of a sudden a great football conference in 2012? If Memphis or Butler had pulled off those national championships a few years ago, were their mid major leagues the best?
No. The best team does not necessarily come from the best conference. In fact, especially in basketball, the best team can very realistically come from the worst.
start cheating more.
Give me a break. They don't even go to their teams games. Here are the stats. Attendance numbers are from 2011-12 (last completed season of attendance)
It's a joke VANDERBILT practically fills their arena almost every game, and big name schools like auburn, georgia and south carolina have pathetic numbers.
Team | Capacity | Avg Att. | % Full |
Alabama | 15,383 | 12,484 | 81% |
Arkansas | 19,368 | 13,096 | 68% |
Auburn | 9,121 | 6,502 | 71% |
Florida | 11,548 | 10,434 | 90% |
Georgia | 10,523 | 7,079 | 67% |
Kentucky | 23,500 | 23,721 | 109% |
LSU | 13,215 | 8,661 | 66% |
Miss. | 9,061 | 5,770 | 64% |
Miss. St. | 10,575 | 8,019 | 76% |
S. Carolina | 18,000 | 8,868 | 49% |
Tennessee | 21,678 | 16,543 | 76% |
Vanderbilt | 14,316 | 13,698 | 96% |
SEC has football, baseball and softball. Kentucky in most years run that conference. This year florida is the team. The ONE team who is worth a damn there and they couldn't even win the conference tournament against a bubble team.
You want to stop being treated like a mid-major? Field some more competitive teams. I'm sure your football counterparts would be happy to explain that to you.
They've been a joke historically really. Kentucky owns the place. Even in a down year, it shouldn't make them lose sleep at night. They have so many SEC banner they could give a bunch of people in 3rd world countries blankets.
I mean, Auburn couldn't even do anything with freaking Charles Barkley. They got to the Elite Eight and that is the biggest accomplishment they've had.
Cuonzo, Cuonzo, Cuonzo. Your team came to UVA and scored fewer points than Mississippi Valley State (SWAC, 5-23), Seattle (WAC, 8-22), and Lamar (Southland, 3-28.) If you don't want to be treated like a mid-major, don't play worse than the shitty ones.
Head shot.
Jesus, does the South ever stop bitching? I'm pretty sure losing the Civil War means you have to keep your mouths shut forever. I'm pretty sure that's in the treaty Lee signed somewhere.
Not really to answer your question. And I live in probably the least "south" southern town around, outside of Austin (which is pretty damn west to be considered south).
