OT: The 68 "Coolest" People to Attend the Tournament Schools

Submitted by nmumike on

SI created a list of the coolest people ever to attend the 68 schools in this years tournament. Some interesting people on the list for sure. Who knew that Bob Gibson HOF pitcher for the Cardinals played basketball at Creighton, or the Big Show from WWE fame played basketball at Wichita State?

Anyways it has Madonna as our "coolest" but I think that is very debatable.

Who do you think is the coolest person to attend, not necessarily graduate from Michigan is?

My choice has to be James Earl Jones or Gilda Radner outside of athletes that played here.

Agree. Whatever definition of cool you use or whatever generation you are in, I can’t think that having the quintessential exhibit A for sex symbol that Marilyn Monroe was as a wife wouldn’t qualify you for an upper echelon berth. Especially when you throw in the Pulitzer, plays, screenwriting, and New York and Hollywood “A list” parties he could attend.

Gilda Radner of Saturday Night Live fame, the inventor of the iPod, co-founder of Google.....

Coolest means many different things for different people.  Madonna certainly wouldn't have been first on my list.  However, it would be hard to argue against her being the most recognizeable across both genders and all cultures and generations.

I went looking for a picture of Brian when we were undergrads and he had short hair and buttoned his flannel shirts.  However, Google Image search is a finnicky mistress.  I will see you all sometime next spring when I return from down south.

...on Twitter last night between Craig Barker (Yostal), BiSB, Raoul, Ace, me and others. Watch the Hoover Street Rag for a bracket event on this topic in the near future.

And, anyone who was married to Marilyn Monroe and penned two of the most acclaimed plays in the 20th century American theater pantheon gets my vote - Arthur Miller.

I would have to go with the all Michigan space crew. Granted it's not 1 individual, but come on; like axes says nothings cooler than astronauts.

I feel like the list had no set criteria and the guy just selected whoever he liked personally. Because Bob Dylan went to Minnesota for a little bit and he should be #1, but he's not even Minnesota's selection. Brad Pitt cooler than Kurt Vonnegut? GTFO

3 WWII vets deserve props...

Norman Mailer is (doubtless) very cool, but Jack Kennedy beats him at Harvard

Gregory Peck has nothing on mountaineer/environmentalist/combat vet David Brower at Cal

I'll stick with Miller for us, but Tom Harmon deserves a mention.

I'm OK with Madonna.  I wouldn't have chosen her myself, but her credentials are pretty impressive.  She created what could loosely be called her own genre and became a giant in her industry.  Her incorporation of dance and the way she leveraged videos to advance her career helped changed the face of music.

Madonna is "not my cup of tea," but her success in the music business certainly can't be denied.  Not bad for someone who showed up with a dance scholarship.
