Lacrosse loses close one, 10-7 vs Colgate at Citi Field
Another close one for Michigan today at the Metropolitan Lacrosse Classic at Citi Field, home of the Mets. Thanks to Mets owner and Michigan alum Fred Wilpon, Michigan was the home team.
Without a couple sloppy plays on defense by Michigan and the fatal colgate mistake of nearly scoring on themselves coming to fruition, Michigan could have very well won this game.
Saturday, 3/23, Michigan will get the defending national champion #10 Loyola (MD) at Michigan Stadium to open up the true home slate. Game will be on MGoBlueTV. This is Loyola's final season in the ECAC. They will be defecting to the Patriot League next season.

Michigan in their big game maize today.
Couldn't we have used the one that already existed?
No, because WolverineDevotee's name wouldn't have been at the top of that post. We all know how important it is to him that he gets to start the thead.
Won't let me watch it, I'm actually gonna have to pay attention in math class noooooo
But on the bright side, I did get my season tickets for lacrosse. $10 for 6 games in the Big House and a t-shirt, pretty good deal to experience a new UofM sport
I did not see anything on mgoblue.com.
SCOOREESS! David Joseph makes it 1-Michigan.
colgate ties it at 1.
On the Colgate goal.
Good crowd but man is it cold...many of the people who were here for the first game chose not to stay because of the cold...
Who played in the first game? We're you there for that game as well?
Yes i was there it was Navy vs Holy Cross with HC pulling out the win
SCORRREESS! Meter makes it 2-1 Michigan!
LOL what a clownshow. The inexperience really shows when you've got seven guys on defense and everyone can see it. JP yelling "DOUBLE THE BALL." Might as well. I wonder what was stopping us from just putting all nine guys on the defensive side once you've got that penalty going for you.
But additional technical penalties would be called so longer man down.
Probably right. I was sort of half-joking but I do assume there's something written in the rulebook to prevent that from happening, otherwise someone would've done it before now.
Crazy that even though I have been around the sport for over a decade there are still things i have never came across or seen happen before.
Would "defender tosses the ball over his goalie's head and almost into his own goal" be one of those? It would for me.
I have seen the goalie drop the ball behind them on a clear. That always make me drop my head as a coach.
Might wanna shield your eyes wahoo. They're talking about the game yesterday coming up next.

Was at the game today. It was cold, but not brutal. I layered. And drank.
M&B - 7 guys on the defensive end happens a lot. If you go offsides, which can happen on clears (it shouldn't, but it does every once in awhile), you just stay and play defense. The flag is already down. There's no reason to go back onsides at that point. I've been playing and coaching a long time, and I see it a lot - especially at the high school level. At the D1 level offsides happens less, but if you go off when the other team has possession, that's what you do.

I know. The problem was that our 7th guy played a little defense, then tried to go back on offense, then went back to defense, and then Michigan settled into a defense that took no advantage whatsoever of the 7th guy, who sort of floated in the middle guarding nobody. Until JP (or another coach) hollered to double the ball so loud you could hear it on TV. It looked like they had no idea what to do in that situation.
colgate goes on the 2 man-up after two penalties. Offsides and pushing.
Full strength and a great save by Logan.
Tied at 2 now.
Maize, sideline guy. Maize.
but you can tell we're still outmatched at the D1 level. Hopefully we'll start turning it around soon
I dunno man. I mean, yes, we are outmatched, but I was thinking you wouldn't have known it from just that first quarter. Other than looking like a Mickey Mouse outfit on the offsides penalty, that is. But they won the faceoff battle and killed Colgate's 2-man-up chance, and probably possessed the ball for the majority of the quarter. And Logan looked great.
End of the 1st: Michigan 2 colgate 2.
the purpose of different sticks?
It's easier to defend with a long stick but easier to play offense with a short stick. You're only allowed to have four long sticks on the field.
Huge breakdown defensive allows colgate to take the lead 3-2 on a dump in. 2-3.
Big goal by Kraus.
SCORRREESS! Kraus makes it 3-3!
colgate scores. 3-4.
colgate scores again. 3-5. Peter Baum, the Tewaarton Trophy winner (Heisman of lacrosse) scores it.
Are when I remember how young this team still is. Bad defensive breakdown right there.
And there's another one. Two guys stay with the screener, nobody takes the ball. Talk about leaving your goalie hanging out to dry.
When I allowed a one on none with my keeper. I played LSM and low defense so it happened more than I like to admit.
colgate goal. 3-6. Michigan needs to respond.
No communication from the defense right there. For those unfamiliar with lacrosse, without defensive communication a defense will fail most of the time.
A near own goal by colgate.
Michigan goes on the man-up.
Any current students or alums know if there is any movement going on about a lacrosse student section group? Need to get behind these guys. They play in the biggest stadium in lacrosse by far and don't draw what they should be.
It's called the "Extra Man Unit" according to the email I got. Tickets were $10 for the season, including a shirt, with seats in section 1. First game is this Saturday.
Halftime score: Michigan 3 colgate 6.
Do you think Coach Paul could have our team competing with most of the squads in two years, or do you think it will take longer? How many recruiting classes will it take? I am just curious, and I think that we need to be patient.
Also, where else do you think it would make sense to try to play in the next couple of years to build some brand awareness? I think Boston, Denver, Philly and San Fran would make sense.
Go Blue!
San Fran probably not. We went out and did a thing in Denver last year, and our conference will have us playing in Colorado (unless and until B1G lacrosse is a thing.) I'd like to see us get ahold of one of the upstate NY teams like the one we're playing now, or Canisius or someone, and play a game in Toronto. Don't think it's necessary to do a neutral-site thing in Philly or Boston with so many teams in those cities we can just do a home-and-home with.

Depends on what you mean by competing. They are competing now. Their last four have been close. If you mean winning, they have a ways to go. Another two years maybe to start winning more than a couple? Even though this is Team Two, they only have one recruiting class in. Watching them today, you can see the difference between the D1 recruits and the returning club guys. They need the current freshmen to grow up, and they need two or three more classes for depth and more top end players.
Will probably be 5-10 years before they have a shot at becoming really good.
colgate scores less than a minute into the 3rd. 3-7.
