Sort of OT: Campus Question - What the heck is that going up
Just on campus (had to drop something at Moe Sport Shop, if anyone is nearby, go drop by, you'll know what I'm refering to once you're inside). Anyway, was turning a corner off of State by Buffalo Wild Wings. What the heck happened to the Frieze Building and what is that thing they're putting up where it used to be???? Any of you who are students want to clue an alum in???

I believe that's going to be the new North Quad...the new dorm to meet the demand of new student enrollment.

are you talking about North Quad?... its a new dorm for upperclassmen. Its like for 500 students and its gunna have a dining center like the hill and a library.

It's going to be a new dormitory, the North Quad. I am a German teacher (work in the MLB) and it's been three years in the up-putting.
Rumor has it it will be a "living and working" space, and will not only house several hundred students, but also provide some homeless departments with homes (e.g. Comparative Literature) and offer classrooms for discussion sessions of the larger cattle-call courses.
If you walk around to Huron, you'll see that they've kept the Frieze building's facade and have integrated it into the structure. While the Frieze building was quite nice, and I'm kind of bummed out it's gone, that's kind of a classy move and something they didn't have to do.

I thought they had to integrate the facade due to historical significance (or something like that). Regardless, it is going to look sweet and be a major upgrade from the Frieze building (aesthetically)

I heard that as long as they kept some portion of the building they were going to save a bundle on the insurance because of the original policy they had on the building.
Which is kinda crazy. But hey, that's what I heard...

The library of the original Ann Arbor HS was deemed a historical landmark, so the rest of the high school (Frieze) was taken down around it.
True story.

While the Frieze building was quite nice
It may have looked nice from the outside, but inside it was a total dump. Its heating and cooling system was atrocious - some rooms were brutally hot in the winter and others were bitterly cold.

even 20 years ago.

Thank god Frieze is gone. It was a terrible building and was a pain in the ass to walk to. I hate how some Ann Arborites were opposed to demolishing it. It seems like in some places there are always some people who are opposed to progress because of nostalgia.

Totally agree, it was even farther than MLB, which to walk to was terrible.

I think I had one class in the Frieze Building and it was a terrible hole-in-the-wall dump when I was in there. That would have been somewhere around 95.
And I don't know how someone could be nostalgic about a crappy building.
As far as pia to get to, I lived in Markley and Oxford housing different years, and didn't have a car, didn't take a bike. Walked everywhere. Must have walked miles just getting to and from classes different days.
