Trey Burke Named 1st Team All-American by SN—and Sources Say He'll Win Big Ten POY
Congrats to Trey Burke for being named first team All-American by Sporting News. The others: Victor Oladipo (Indiana), Kelly Olynyk (Gonzaga), Otto Porter (Georgetown), and Marcus Smart (Oklahoma State).
Also, reports on Twitter are that Burke will be named Big Ten player of the year tonight:
Hearing from several sources that U-M PG Trey Burke, one of five finalists for the Cousy Award, will be awarded Big Ten POY tonight. #bookit

And: Michigan's Trey Burke officially a finalist for the Bob Cousy Award
The other five finalists on the list are: Syracuse's Michael Carter-Williams, Saint Mary's Matthew Dellavedova, Miami's Shane Larkin and Oklahoma State's Marcus Smart.
The Cousy Award will be announced during Final Four weekend.
EDIT: It seems likely that Burke will eventually gain consensus first-team All-American status. According to the Michigan record book, here's the select company he would join:
Cazzie Russell 1965
Cazzie Russell 1966
Rickey Green 1977
Gary Grant 1988
Chris Webber* 1993

Here we go again with the "sources."
He has to be in the discussion for greatest PGs ever to play here .
He's the only Big Ten player EVER to score 15 points a game at any position. He should be in the discussion for best player that UM has ever had. He's definitely top 10, maybe top 5.
I think you mean "15 points in every game," and not 15 ppg.
Top five (not in order):
- Jalen -17p/4r/3a and two final fours.
- Trey - 19p/6.8a/3r this season.
- Gary Grant - All time leader in steals, assists, top ten in scoring.
- Rumeal - won an NCAA championship.
- Lavell Blanchard, Manny Harris or Daniel Horton...I'm forgetting players, who else?
I can't do it because I'm too new, this would be an interesting discussion in it's own thread.
Blanchard was a forward and Harris was a 2 guard and forward.
You're right. For some reason I remember Blanchard being a PG. I'm thinking of someone else.
Ricky Green is in the discussion as top 5
You're forgetting that sweet-shooting small forward that banged Sarah Palin.
Not sure how you compare careers for Burke's 2 years versus someone like Grant who stayed 4 years. And Rumeal is hard to judge. How do you compare the decisive free throws in OT of a national championship game for a player who was quite good versus Burke and Grant who were simply better overall players than Rumeal but have no signature moment of that extraordinary magnitude?
Having said all that, in my opinion his 2 years as a PG were the best of any 2 years for any M PG and his season this year is on track to be the best season for any M PG in the 30 years I've been following the team. The low turnover numbers are really what sets him apart.
The General graced us for four years, culminating in the championship. We will not be able to say that about Trey. I love the kid more than any that's ever played for Michigan, but I gotta give it up to Gary Grant.
That's pretty cool, would be cooler if he stayed another year
Wishful thinking I know
HAIL !
Go Blue!
and Wooden Poy for Burke would be a snub.
Well he won't win the Wooden...in the history of the Wooden award only a few PG have ever won the award...
I've stated before how much ESPN loves Oladipo--pretty sure they said he's the next Michael Jordan, which, ....--but even their analysts and such say Trey Burke WILL win the Wooden Award.
Very happy for Alfonso! Much deserved!!!
Trey has been great this year, congrats
Big Ten POY is great, but I want a national POY.
Ballin' is a habit
Good for Burke. Here's to him winning the Wooden as well. That's a pretty damn good recruiting pitch Beilein could have in the coming years.
I'd go as far to say Burke is amongst my favorite group of M athletes, up there with Hart, Henne, and Hagelin.
Woodson, Denard, Hart, Braylon and Trey top 5 if you held a gun to my head.
Desmond Howard, Charles Woodson, Jimmy King, Mike Hart, and Trey is tied with Jake Ryan right now.
These are favorites, not necessarily best
you would include Anthony Carter.

That should ever be on a list would be Morrison and maybe Turco or JMFJ.
Im writin this because I saw someone else Mention him in this post. He was my favorite Michigan bball player till trey. Im 26 and just don't remember the fan five but do remember Louis bullock etc. Blanchard though was awesome, class act too. How good do you think he would be had he been on a better team? How nicely would he fit in as a PF on this team??? It's sad because his talent is always forgotten.
The Fab Five was revolutionary. The had talent and swag. They would dominate today's teams. Have to remember they played in the days of 3-4 year players where teams were stacked with talent who played 3-4 years together. They just were too young to win it all against veteran teams back then.
What time does this get announced?
It'll be announced during the All-Conference Selection Show, airing on the Big Ten Network from 7:00 to 7:30 ET.
