If you had...
to, for some terrible, terrible reason, turn in your Michigan Fan card and adopt some other college football program as your own, who would it be?
I would like to pick either Wisconsin or PSU because for some reason I have always liked those programs, but it would be to tragic to have to root against Michigan every year.
I think I would untimately hop on the Texas bandwagon. They seem to have a clean program, and generally have fairly classy players. Their coach seems like a nice guy. You don't hear a ton of crap about their fans. Good tradition, average stadium. Great rivalry game with OU. Also under consideration would be Georgia Tech or Virginia Tech.
Hook 'Em Horns!

Texas first, Ga Tech as well, PSU. Huh. I cribbed your list. Great minds and all that.
Oh, I'd add Univ. of Washington. Honestly. Maybe Wisconsin.

Either Yeshiva University or Slippery Rock.

I think you misspelled "Minnesota" as "Northwestern". Just letting you know.
September 10th, 2009 at 8:52 PM ^
What did I ever do to you to deserve this?
September 10th, 2009 at 3:22 PM ^
Probably a team that is constantly terrible. That way any win would be cause for celebration, and a loss wouldn't make me feel sick to my stomach for a few days.
September 10th, 2009 at 3:27 PM ^
I assume you are talking about Michigan state cause that pretty much describes every state fan I know
September 10th, 2009 at 3:23 PM ^
Rodert Griffin is awesome
September 10th, 2009 at 3:24 PM ^
I like the topic. Here are my picks:
Big Ten - PSU
Big East - UC
Pac 10 - Cal
Big 12 N - Mizzo
Big 12 S - Texas
ACC A - Clemson
ACC C - NC
WAC - Boise
SEC - NOBODY
September 10th, 2009 at 4:42 PM ^
Big Ten - PSU - agree, even if their fans are a little out of control wrt distaste for Michigan.
Big East - Before Jihad I, WVU. Now, UConn, up from I-AA.
Pac 10 - Cal - agree
Big 12 N - Iowa State (family ties on mom's side way back)
Big 12 S - Texas
ACC A - Wake Forest (a number of friends attended)
ACC C - NC (family ties)
WAC - Hawai'i
SEC - Vanderbilt (an oasis in a swamp of obnoxious)
MWC - Colorado State (my baby sister goes there)

My current #2 team and the college that I attended which is the University of South Florida. Kind of hilarious since Jim Leavitt and Rich Rod can not stand each other.
September 10th, 2009 at 3:39 PM ^
Why do they call it U of South Florida?
September 10th, 2009 at 4:50 PM ^
Is it like Us Vs The Panhandle AND WE FUCKING HATE THEM! I mean, the University of South Florida sounds like it might be as tough as the University of the Northwest Territories (only warmer). High school on steroids?
I heard you get a"D" in science at USF if you have tan lines. Is that true?
September 10th, 2009 at 3:32 PM ^
I would invent an imaginary Michigan that I could still love, and that love would be requited by victories glorious and innumerable!
September 10th, 2009 at 3:30 PM ^
I don't get why everybody thinks Texas is so clean? They've had slews of arrests, guns, weed and it's even become a joke to talk about how many pot heads they have on their team. (I'm surrounded by both UT and A&M alums and even the UT guys don't deny the excessive involvement w/ the police - down here they are regarded much like how we think of OSU...).
Personally I'd go w/ TCU if I had to - have a good coach, seem to play at least 1 big name every year so you'd have a chance to pull an upset and, at least lately, they've been pretty good. They also at least have some history with 2 NC's and players like Sammy Baugh, Davey O'Brian and LT.

Pot smokers in Austin? Home of the most whacked Americana/Alt Country music scene in the world? You've gotta be kidding.....

Texas, Florida State, or Colorado.
September 10th, 2009 at 7:04 PM ^
Bingo Bango Bongo.
1. Tennessee ( liked Fulmer, like the stadium and like the tradition and colors ... hate Kiffin though)
2. Colorado
3. UNC
4. UCLA
5. maybe A&M?
September 10th, 2009 at 3:35 PM ^
the U
September 10th, 2009 at 3:37 PM ^
Nebraska. Iowa and Wisconsin as runners-up. I need a rich, old-school tradition and a midwest location. Good academics are a plus, but I can't bring myself to cheer for ND what with Weis and the whole Catholocism thing. Northwestern has so little fan support that it seems like it'd be boring to be a fan of theirs. Otherwise they'd be up there, too.
September 10th, 2009 at 3:37 PM ^
so Rutgers. Barring that, the U.
September 10th, 2009 at 3:40 PM ^
Local team, cheap tickets, great seats available, Ron English.
September 10th, 2009 at 3:40 PM ^
Which ever team Ohio State was playing that weekend.
September 10th, 2009 at 3:42 PM ^
Hands Down:
UCLA # 1 and then Georgia Tech #2 (sucker for that ramblin' wreck!)
September 10th, 2009 at 3:46 PM ^
I would go for UCLA. It has great academics, good athletics, and a gorgeous campus in a nice location.
September 10th, 2009 at 3:42 PM ^
Good football, great academics, good college town, good college town food, good uni's.
September 10th, 2009 at 3:44 PM ^
Honestly, nobody. I don't really root for any other team in any other sport, amateur or professional. There are certain teams I like to see win, but no one I really care about all that much.
September 10th, 2009 at 3:45 PM ^
Kennesaw State at Kennesaw Tech

gotta luv dem winged helmets.
September 10th, 2009 at 3:45 PM ^
South Dakota State University.
Go Jacks!
Fear the Rabbit!
September 10th, 2009 at 3:46 PM ^
go with either Virginia Tech or Oregon. I like them both, but neither is anything near Michigan.
September 10th, 2009 at 3:47 PM ^
PSU, the U, 'Bama.
For whatever reason I always cheer for teams with tradition outside of ND (yes even OSU). It makes college football more fun when the "powers" are powerful.
Side note: this is why I am in favor of a playoff. Just the thought of something like this actually playing out...
1. Michigan
8. Texas
4. USC
5. OSU
6. The U
3. 'Bama
7. FSU
2. Oklahoma
...gets me all giddy.
September 10th, 2009 at 3:49 PM ^
USC. I know the program isnt too clean but i love the colors and i can still root against OSU and ND. Also my gf is a big USC fan so I learned to like them
September 10th, 2009 at 7:07 PM ^
Shouldn't get negbanged for saying you would root for someone that other people don't like. I couldnt root for USC but I can seewhy some would.

I've always loved LSU, having them as my second favorite team to Michigan.
Their coach is a Michigan man +1
Decent Historical Tradition +1
Unique Uniforms +1
Incredible Gameday Experience +1
Excellent Recent Success +1
Great Tailgating Food +1
Awesome Tiger Mascot +1
Incredible Recruiting Base +1
SEC School that can beat up on FLA, Bama and TN +1
Southern Hospitality +1
Hot, Easy, Southern Girls +1
Nice Football Weather (in the fall at least) +1
I've always liked LSU, which might be attributed to the fact that Louisiana is my favorite state (after Michigan.) Have always liked it down there, which makes LSU my second favorite team behind Michigan
September 10th, 2009 at 4:38 PM ^
Co-sign.
September 10th, 2009 at 4:39 PM ^
Coolest mid-field logo +1
September 10th, 2009 at 5:34 PM ^
LSU is the number two team in my house, as Mrs. 60 is an alum and native. Never been to a game in Death Valley, but if the tailgating food is as good as the rest of the food down there, it's worth more than +1.
Otherwise, I could probably become a Maryland fan if I worked at it. I can't bring myself to list another Big 10 school but will say I've been to plenty of Penn State games and never had a problem rooting for the home team when there wasn't a Wolverine on the other side of the line.
September 10th, 2009 at 5:51 PM ^
Agree with everything you said ...by far, the most fun of the recruiting visits I took was LSU. The girls were out of this world but... I still went to Michigan :)
I also root for the hopeless SDSU Aztecs (local team)
September 10th, 2009 at 6:28 PM ^
I suppose admiring LSU from afar makes some sense but truly they have one of the most ignorant, myopic and redneck fanbases around. I live in New Orleans and everything is LSU all the time.
Since they are the only competitive D-1 school in the state (Tulane being the other D-1 but non-competitive school) everyone is an LSU fan, and they get face-twistingly confused if you live in Louisiana and don't support LSU. People speak of Wal-Mart Wolverines but b/c of LSU's position in Louisiana the WHOLE STATE is nothing but Big Lots Bengals.
Their support is not of the mgoblog variety, they have little historical perspective on anything and generally know very little outside of SEC football. I've had LSU fans tell me that Tennessee has the biggest stadium in the country and that LSU is a much more prestigious program than Michigan.
As far as the redneck stuff goes: I was at the LSU-Tulane game last year, wearing a Tulane sweatshirt and some LSU fan got in front of me and my friend and asked us why we had Tulane stuff. We told him we were alums, he said: "What are ya, a bunch of Jews?!" I hate LSU.
September 10th, 2009 at 3:53 PM ^
Fresno State, my hometown college ball team. Maybe Cal, as it is likely where I would have gone if I hadn't moved to Michigan.
September 10th, 2009 at 3:54 PM ^
Georgia Tech (b/c Paul Johnson impresses me), Oregon (love the crazy approach to an inherently conservative sport) and Texas Tech (the Dread Pirate of Lubbock is to clever and nutty not to like).
edit: Whoops, forgot to type a word. Go me.
September 10th, 2009 at 3:54 PM ^
UNC, Texas, and Vandy.
September 10th, 2009 at 3:54 PM ^
... sike.
September 10th, 2009 at 3:55 PM ^
Colorado, because thats where i go to school. But we will never be able to compete with Texas and Oklahoma so routing for them is pointless right now.
September 10th, 2009 at 3:57 PM ^
but I would choose not to be a college football fan any longer.
September 10th, 2009 at 3:58 PM ^
Penn State. Like them or not, it's a classy fanbase that are rabid in a very good way about their school.
and they're "liiiiiiinnnnnbbbaaaaccckkkkaaaaahhhuuuhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!"
September 10th, 2009 at 3:59 PM ^
Or any team that is playing the bucknuts or notre dame.
September 10th, 2009 at 3:59 PM ^
East Carolina University Pirates.
Did I go there? No. Am I from there? No.
Then why?
Pirates. Wearing purple.
September 10th, 2009 at 4:02 PM ^
I don't think I could root for another team honestly. I go to Vandy for grad school and I don't even really like them.
