How did your Mgoblog life start?

Submitted by Big_H on

It's friday and the weekend is finally here! So I thought I would start something interesting to talk about. Something fun. Something other than who will win the NCAA 2014 game cover vote.

So let's hear it. How did your Mgoblog life start?

For me it's been a fun journey. It all started late 2009/early 2010 when I was really getting into Michigan recruiting. To be honest I had almost no clue who to follow or where to look. I will even admit I used to look at Mlive for any information on Michigan football or recruiting(I would never post on there though). I would check the front pages of Rivals for any free info but that just wasn't good enough. Then there was one day I was looking for new sites and I ran across this Mgoblog. At first, I really didn't know what to think there was so much content with all this crazy shit going on in it. I didn't understand how to even start looking around. I didn't like it, but the urge to come back for some recruiting news led me back every once and awhile. By 2011 I started to check the blog weekly and started to read the comments on topics that intrigued me. I started to learn the Mgoblog lingo and inside jokes also how to not act like an idiot when something is being discussed that I don't agree with. Man I was starting to feel comfortable around here even though I did not have an account, yet. Then 2012 rolled around and I found myself coming to this site multiple times daily. With that it was time to start an account. It's been great ever since and I always have the information I want and more. I feel like this site has made me a better Michigan fan and I'm really glad I stumbled upon it.

I hope to hear some good stories and sorry for any grammar errors. If you don't like the content than get a mod to delete it. Go Blue!

I first began reading back in 2009 in order to learn more about the spread option offense that Rodriguez was installing.  It was so interesting to me and I had absolutely no idea what I was watching.  I probably never thanked Brian et al. for learning me up right.  It definitely made watching much more enjoyable, even if the team was losing.  I loved watching the offense in action.

Of course, then the "CC" posts started happening and JHackney and I decided to become douchey posters.  I think we mostly did it because the endless threads on the topic took away from what we enjoyed about the site and made us all look like every other idiotic fan base.  Thankfully that is all over and most people seem to have moved on.  Now I visit for the information, obviously, but also for the comraderie and friendship.  Unfortunately, some people haven't forgotten my douchebaggery and still hold grudges.

during NSD for Hoke's first class. In an effort to not watch Judge Joe Brown, I took to the interwebs. I came across a blogspot "Michigan Football Recruiting" (which is no longer active). It had a link to a bunch of other UM blogs. I clicked here, and haven't been able to kick the habit since.

For me I was on umgoblue.com after The Horror and someone posted something like: "I think Brian over at mgoblog.com has lost his mind". I clicked over and the whole website was changed to pink with a bunch of cute kitten pics.

Actually created a login around 09 was at a local brewery Cambridge Brewing Company and one of their beers said it had essense of Farmhouse Funk, and the clouds parted, and it hit me I finally have my login for mgoblog.

In 2007 I was deployed to Afghanistan, and it was the whole Horror-Coaching Search, that led me to this wonderful discovery.  Although I didn't register and start posting until January 2009.  I used that time to learn the lingo of the board, the things not to say, and that format and content can make or break a forum topic.  Now I check in multiple times a day, and have met multiple people on here who are now regulars at my tailgates in the fall.  This place also has helped me in the past with personal situations.....the links below.

I moved here with my best friend and gf on Aug 1, 2008.  After a few weeks he told me about this website for michigan sports info.  I got REALLY addicted to the blog, but started to get really pissed off at the arrogance of the people on here.  Then I posted my first, and still most memorable, thread early in 2009.  I've calmed down since then, and realized that the blog is what it is, it's like a living, breathing entity and there is nothing I can do to change it.  I'm still addicted though, and you're all still douchey MGoBlog users

I totally remember that flameout but didn't link it to you.  I wish we could still see the cumulative point totals in the thread.  There were some serious posbangs and negbangs in that one if I remember correctly.   Ahhhhh the good old days.  The days when it took an EXTREME amount of balls to start that thread.

Stumbled upon it back during spring ball in 2006.  That season michigan had a great run and reading MGoBlog every day during the season made it even more fun.  Still the best work I think Brian has done.

I forgot to add how the February 12' recruiting boom had a major effect on how much I started to come to the blog to post. That was the most amazing thing.

A simple Google search after being disgusted with other random places....mainly Mlive.... Found this place & have never left since. Rarely comment, but love the professionalism & the way the board self moderates.

recruiting rather casually in 2008-9 .  I remember stumbling across the blog at about the time we were in on Dee Hart.  I would visit occasionally and became a regular during the coaching search that eventually landed us Coach Hoke.  I am pretty sure it was the frequent flight tracker posts that got me hooked, but it was the TomVH insider information that got me to visit multiple times a day and finally start an account.

basically to get as much info as possible about the upcoming season and see what other M fans thought about 2010. I lurked for most of the season and finally signed up when the "CC" stuff really took off, then lurked some more when that got bad, started doing a lot of commenting before the Gator Bowl and never stopped.

"Rosenberg Punches Dolphins"

I was a casual reader before that, but when my house appeared on the front page that was enough of an ego stroke to make me an addict afterwards.

...and starting a real job.

Nothing is as eye opening as graduating from college and realizing most people just spend most of their work day just surfing the internets.  Fortunately I found a good place to hangout.

As for posting actively, today is my birthday!

I used to be like many of you... searching for any kind of information about upcoming seasons/recruiting etc. many of us were lost souls, visiting the depths of mlive for our fixes... I felt like a gutter slut.

THEN I FOUND MGOBLOG VIA GOOGLE :)

Completely addicted. It's my homepage at home and at work. I have the apps for all my phones/tablets etc.

I check multiple times a day. Right now, I fear I could be missing an initial hello post. shiitt!!!!!

I used to post on the ESPN board and someone linked Mgoblog and it was all over. A place with order and a face that self policed with pos-bangs and neg-bombs was perfect.

The details of my life are quite inconsequential. where do I begin? My father was a relentlessly self-improving boulangerie owner from Belgium with low grade narcolepsy and a penchant for buggery. My mother was a fifteen year old French prostitute named Chloe with webbed feet. My father would womanize, he would drink, he would make outrageous claims like he invented the question mark. Some times he would accuse chestnuts of being lazy, the sort of general malaise that only the genius possess and the insane lament. My childhood was typical, summers in Rangoon, luge lessons. In the spring we'd make meat helmets. When I was insolent I was placed in a burlap bag and beaten with reeds, pretty standard really. At the age of 12 I received my first scribe. At the age of fourteen, a Zoroastrian named Vilma ritualistically shaved my testicles. There really is nothing like a shorn scrotum, it's breathtaking, I suggest you try it.

I read an article about how Brian was "the future of sports journalism" because he had more web traffic than the Ann Arbor News (not really a fair fight). Then I moseyed on over to the blog, amicably lurked for several years, and registered today!

My ex gf kept nagging me to join Facebook. I kept shutting her down until she showed me how many Michigan groups there were on there for all sorts of shit. For that reason I joined Facebook and then while reading a Michigan recruiting h.q. group someone mentioned they got their info from mgoblog.
Initially I typed into google and misspelled it apparently bc I got a picture of the mantauk monster. I was successful in my second attempt, and found myself binging like a crazy man

I started following recruiting in the late 99 (or maybe 2000).  I think the name of the board was like GMBW (or a name similar ot the current site) and there were some big posters like KuaiGirl, Sam Webb before he became big time and a bunch of others.  It was great.  Then I moved over to Rivals when it started with Tom et all when SleepyGuy used to be just a poster.  When Scout started I joined that site as well and after a few years decided to cancel my Rivals and stay on Scout.  Around 2009 I came to MGo just as a lurker as I started hearing more about it and I was getting fed up with the admins and some of the community on Scout.  A bit later I cancelled my Scout and made MGo my default sports page - so happy about that decision.

Carr's retirement that he was retiring hooked me here. Brian reported, like on the Tuesday before the OSU game, that Carr would be stepping down the Monday after the OSU game -- he was the first to say it.  And he got it dead right.  He said it was from a source deep in the organization.

I was immediately convinced, Brian was hooked into things, and I should pay attention to him. And I've been hitting F5 at least once very 5 minutes on this site ever since.

On my iPhone --- MGoBlog is one of the 4 apps at the launch window at the bottom.

Stumbled upon this site during the summer of 2008 as a middle schooler. Made an account but thought most of the people here were douches/stuck up so I just read this religiously without really commenting.

I started coming to the site sometime in 2005 or 2006 while I was in High School. I can't remember if one of my friends told me about it, or if we both found it independently and just talked about it a lot.

I also have to admit that I I used to frequent a certain hive of scum and villainy for all things Michigan. I was getting fed up trolls and idiot fans there, and that's when I discovered Bleacher Report. So I basically went from the Mos Eisley cantina to Jabba's palace.

It was by fate however, that I saw a link to a story on MgoBlog, and decided to check it out. It was the week of The Game of '09, and I read this thread that was started by Steve Sharik I believe. Between that thread and the subsequent comments, I have been hooked ever since.

I spent years searching for the meaning of life.  Catholicism, Buddishm.  I went through a shoe fetish one night in East Quad.  Blimpy Burger filled that void until I started gaining weight.  Nothing seemed to fit.

And then I found porn.

...and then the world waited for Dave Brandon's decision on Rich Rodriguez.  MGoBlog has since become a daily diversion.  I only recently created my account.  Between internet porn and MGoBlog, my life, marriage, and workplace have been fulfilling.

was a movement on the rise and some thought it was a sleeper faction of a rival regime. I was brought in to infiltrate and crack the walls from the inside. Turned out it was more just a band of over-exuberant neer-do-wells with an unhealthy fascination with Stalinist Russia. I liked the place well enough so i stayed. Also I did some serious couch time after surgery on my foot in 2006. That and I needed something to satiate the void in my life after John David Booty crushed my soul dong at my first Rose Bowl.

I was in a class with a friend of mine and he was telling me about this awesome basketball player (Mitch McGary) who might come to Michigan and was deciding soon. He showed me a writeup on this site and since then I've been reading this blog pretty regularly. I'm not really sure why it took me so long to make an account, but I guess I wanted to get a read on if the community was any good and had some educated discussions. Of course I wasn't disappointed and finally got around to making an account recently. This blog will always be the first place I come to find out about any news Michigan or sports related.

I snuck up on a coworker and I did my Kool-aid 'OHH YEAHHH' and scared the shit out of him. I noticed this page up on his computer and the angels began to sing. He told me it was the best Michigan blog out there. I quickly returned to my desk, read a few threads and signed up. Now, I die for this shit.

My friend showed me Mgoblog and it helped me follow recruiting much closer. I lurked for a couple years and then joined.
