OT: Let's go Hoosiers?

Submitted by DemetriusBrown on

If Indiana wins tonight I think it would be really difficult for Michigan to share the Big Ten Title. If state protects the home floor could they possibly be #1 when they visit Crisler?  Big game tonight. Thoughts??

Yea but all my staee friends facebook have been talking shit all day. Gota pull for the hooisers. IU could easily still loose two more if they win tonight.

If it came down to Sparty having to win for MIchigan to win the BT championship, I would cheer for them.  Sadly, the basketball gods pretty much took away Michigan's chances when they guided the last-ditch Wiscy heave through the net.  That means I don't have to root for Sparty.

Besides, the real championship comes in a few weeks, and it takes six consecutive wins.

I think I would feel better about rooting for state only if I was ensured we would finish with only 4 losses and thus stay in the hunt and that state in this case would pick up a 4th loss. I would feel pretty shitty if I rooted for them and then they didn't pick up a 4th loss and they won the big 10 outright.

Not going to root for State unless it's imperative that they must win for our BT title.  I think State can lose tonight and we can still get the title.  Indiana doesn't play well on the road and could drop one at Minnesota.

I can see both teams losing to OSU and Michigan back-to-back.  Sparty could also lose to Wisconsin, so in theory I do hope they beat Indiana tonight.

Barring an unforeseen collapse, if IU wins they will probably win the conference outright.

MSU has a tougher schedule, so the odds are better of them losing down the stretch and giving us a shot at a B1G title.

IU: at MSU, at Minny, Iowa, OSU, at UM

MSU: IU, at OSU, at UM, WISC, NW

UGhhhh....gonna be wanting Sparty to win tonight.  I won't be cheering or rooting but I have to say my interest lies in Sparty getting the win, moreso, Indiana getting a Loss.

One interesting note is that Michigan State is a one or two point favorite on most lines, and Massey and other predictive sites actually are predicting more or less a statistical tossup in this game, which I could believe.

In any case, Indiana is 23-3 right now, and looking at Massey, predicted to go 3-2 the rest of the way. Michigan is at 22-4 and predicted to go 4-1 in the remainder of the schedule. Based on the numbers, we have the easier road to such a record, whereas Indiana still has to go to Minnesota as well as come to Crisler. From the standpoint of still having a significant chance of at least sharing the conference title, looking at predictions for remaining games, Indiana definitely has to tank tonight or otherwise be inexplicably upset somewhere else.

Offensively, looking at comparisons, Indiana has no reason to lose, but then I look at a Big Ten that is collectively 0.417 on the road this year and realize that stranger things have happened.

I believe it was Brian that tweeted this earlier:

If IU wins today Michigan has a 44% chance of winning the B1G as opposed to a 76% chance if MSU wins

Got to root for MSU, but very unenthusiastically.  I do think MSU wins this game though from an unbiased perspective.  They probably should have won at Bloomington and they are playing great right now.  Not to mention they do not lose at home very often, and are undefeated there this year.

I hate games like this, where the circumstances down the road have to take first priority over just rooting against a team you hate.  Indiana screwed everything up by winning in Columbus, which I'm still shocked they were able to win so easily.   Should be an entertaining game regardless.

The Hoosiers are winless all time at Breslin, though.

Not really worried about it. Don't think we can beat both sparty and Indiana with the way we have been playing.

Here's the breakdown:

We are two games back from Indiana and MSU. Assuming that we win out, that means that we are one game back. The winner tonight will still be a game up and a the loser will be tied with us. Therefore, we need the winner to lose an additional game.

If Indiana wins and then loses an additional game, and then all of the teams win out, we will be tied at 4 losses in conference. The tiebreaker would be record against teams in the tie. Indiana wins the tie breaker at 3-1. Therefore, we would need one of the two teams tied to incur an additional loss. If MSU is that team, then Indiana has the better record against MSU and takes beats us in that tiebreaker, so we really need Indiana to lose an additional game.

If MSU wins and loses another game, all of the teams are tied and have even records against each other. It then goes to record against the next best team, which would be Wisconsin. Wisconsin beat Michigan and Indiana, so MSU would win this tiebreaker. Therefore, we would need MSU to lose an additional game.

Basically, we need the winner of this game to lose two more games beyond losing to us. The schedules to finish the season are relatively, so I don't think it really matters. With Oladipo injured, that is probably our best bet for two additional losses.

Long story short, root for Indiana because either way, the circumstances to #1 seed in the tournament are the same.
