OT: Friday POSBANG (what are you listening to?)

Submitted by ChopBlock on

Happy Friday everyone! Right around now is when the winter doldrums reach their peak. Areas close to Lake Michigan should see more than half a foot of snow in the next day, and the UP will get in excess of a foot, because obviously. Looks like cross-country skiing is in the works for me this weekend. What are your weekend plans?

From time to time it's nice to refresh our stale music libraries with a few fresh songs or artists. I always enjoy hearing something a little off the beaten path. We've all heard the Beach Boys, Metallica, Toby Keith, etc. How about your favorite, less-well-known bands? I offer two:

Chaotech: A rather interesting metal outfit out of Helsinki, Finland. They've come out with one EP, €xi$t, and a couple singles. I strongly recommend listening to the EP straight-through in its entirety if you happen to be a headbanger. Tracks "Apparatus of Reason" and "Decreation" are particularly noteworthy (both Soundcloud links).

Barilari: Argentinian rocker. Adrian Barilari was one of the founders of the heavy metal movement in Argentina back in the 80s as a member of the group Rata Blanca. His current solo project is reminiscent of perhaps early-80s Iron Maiden. In addition to "Abuso de Poder" embedded below, I also suggest the track "Algo Magico"

Anyways, given the diversity of tastes on the board, it's pretty likely that if you suggest some of your favorite music (of any type or genre), at least one other poster will appreciate it. Happy listening!

Edit: By the way, a posbang thread isn't a posbang thread unless you posbang people. So posbang away!

Favorite THS tracks (right now):

1) One for the Cutters

2) The Weekenders

3) Stay Positive

4) Stuck Between Stations

5) Your Little Hoodrat Friend

I f'ing love Finn's writing.  The really good songs have a big-screen, cinematic quality.  Imagine if Springsteen never got laid, had to sit thru endless upper-midwest winters and did lot more blow...

The Baseball Project:  Steve Wynn from The Dream Syndicate, The Miracle 3, Danny & Dusty and other bands; his wife, drummer LInda Pitmon; R. E. M.'s Mike Mills (filling in for R. E. M.'s Peter Buck) and Scott McCaughey of The Fresh Young Fellows and also an R. E. M. tour guitarist.

Here's Craig Finn performing a song he wrote for The Baseball Project about his long-time passion for the Minnesota Twins:

Bullet for my Valentine.  Newly released album and back to The Poison just so I can remember how good they once were.

It is night and day the difference in Tuck's voice and ability on those two albums compared with Fever and Temper Temper.  I know he had surgery (sad), but damn it sure is not anywhere near the same.  It doesn't help either that they consciously made an effort to change styles a bit.  The End and Say Goodnight on repeat.

set to Outcast/Busta Rhymes channel.  There are many raps songs that I used to think were just good beats that have some very insightful/funny stuff going on.  i took a good 6-7 year break from any rap/hip hop but I have to say I miss some of these songs.

by Jason Lowenstein from At Sixes and Sevens just popped up on Pandora.  Before that it was newer Guided by Voices song.  The song was good.  GBV has been putting out about 7 albums a year lately and I can't keep up.

I'm just hanging out updating the normal 400 reports here, waiting for a call from the optometrist so I can pick up my new glasses and put all this off until Monday. In essence, using work as a way to bide my time. As for music, I've got some Yellow Magic Orchestra in the player right now. Japanese techno plus the early 1980s equals some pretty cool compositions.

as all those Russian people who get off on videotaping themselves driving around in the bleak wasteland on their way to work.

In other words, I'm listening to meteor-induced sonic booms... and Mariah Carey?  In RUSSIA??!

Listening to Dizzy Wright! If you don't know him then you should take a look.

Also, I found this interesting. (Rivals)

"His arm is every bit as strong as [Pittsburgh Steelers Pro-Bowler] Ben Roethlisberger, and I've worked with Ben," Clarkson said. "He's not Cam Newton-strong, but he's plenty strong. There's not a throw he can't make, his deep ball can probably go 75-80 yards with just the snap of his wrist. He spins the ball very well."

This is from Wilton Speights quarterback coach, So can we please stop with the his arm isn't that strong comments.
