I didn't see an update to the Yahoo! story, but USA Today states that the police in fact plan to charge him with murder and plan to also oppose bail for Pistorius.

The story mentions that there has been some speculation that Reeva Steenkamp might have been planning a Valentine's Day surprise for Pistorius, as she tweeted hours before (according to the story in the Guardian) that she was excited about Valentine's Day.

Very tragic, and thoughts and condolences to the victim and her family.

CNN is reporting that there had been previous domestic dispute incidents between Oscar and his girlfriend.  This might not be the "he shot her because he thought she was an intruder" thing but instead "he shot her because they had a fight."  Either way this is sad and my thoughts and prayers go out to her family.

Please forgive my poor wording. I agree that this is an inappropriate use of "allegedly". In order to educate this sports journalist and others who may use the word in the wrong context, I was hoping the brain trust of the board could provide better examples of where you might use "allegedly".

Anyone?

I dont get it.  Why do people in arguements, no matter what they're over, decide the other person deserves the death penalty because of it?  I guarentee you (and no I wasnt there - just NJIH) whatever it was over wasnt close to throwing away two lifes over it - hers and his.

So sad.  So senseless.

And she was in an abusive relationship! I just got the same feeling I get when people in Detroit tell me they are a reverend. I think really, with that attitude, actions, and mouth. Sigh, tax relief.....oops I am rambling.

what I believe mGrowOld meant (and he can correct me if I'm wrong) was that if indeed this was some sort of domestic dispute/argument that escalated, it is a shame that Pistorius felt that whatever his girlfriend had done was worthy of killing her over, i.e. giving her the death penalty.  her life is now over, and his life is now ruined as well as he'll likely spend the rest of it behind bars, hence two lives ruined.

South Africa is to smoking hot girls what Australia is to good cinema.  Considering the smaller sample size of the population, they go toe-to-toe with anyone in the field in terms of sheer quality.

With that out of the way, that's awful news.  And sadly, not alledged.  Like Jimi said, he gave her the gun...he shot her.

A beloved athlete is in the news for doing something horrible?  What else is new.   I also fail to see the humour here.  Very sad story.
