REFUTED: Hoke does NOT cry over Recruits

Submitted by alum96 on

Hoke just told Sam Webb that's just a rumor, he has never cried over a recruit (read: Green).  His dad - yes.  Recruits - nah.  Not sure where that rumor started.  As some people in that thread said, you could see Hoke crying after a young man graduates after 5 years with Hoke but just for a signing? Nah.

Now has Hoke often pointed at a recruit?  Hell yes. (allegedly)

EDIT - as poster commented below the quote came from Green

“He was real excited,” Green said. “I kept him on his toes. But when I told him today he was just astound and actually started crying. It was crazy, it was an unbelievable experience.”

Better to cry than break wind during a recruit's verbal I suppose.  Rumor has it Charlie Weis was known to cut one in excitement when told the good news on the recruiting front.

Green clarified that later (I don't remember where) saying that Hoke was emotional, but he wasn't sure if he cried. I think it is safe to say that Hoke is always passionate about what he is building at Michigan, but no tears over a recruit, whether he signs or not.

A. Who cares other than OSU and MSU fans, B. Green already refuted it last week but it was more fun for people to just stick with the original story, whatever, and C. I cry just a little when I think of letting go.

Jerry Hanlon spoke at Bacon's class a few years ago and said that recruiting was tough because he would get so upset when someone you recruited went to another school.  Its not uncommon to get emotionally invested in recruiting.

I heard that's how the historic hat choosing ceremony began, as a way for ancient recruits to shield themselves from past coaches sobbing over them on signing days of yore.

Hoke has a pretty unique voice, and I can imagine he could be mistaken as crying when just getting really excited about something. Especially over the phone.

I remember how shocked I was when I first heard Hoke's voice at his introductory press conference. Wasn't what I was expected when I saw pictures of the guy.
