Whoa whoa whoa. I haven't followed the Lions very closesly so correct me if I'm wrong. I was under the impression that KVB was one of our better D-Linemen. I know he is getting older, but wasn't he at least supposed to be part of why Suh and Fairley had a good shot with the lions, because he could pass on all his experience?

I really don't know how good KVB is or was, but maybe he was just a really experienced guy that we don't need as much. Any insight into the career KVB had with the lions would be appreciated.

The lions pressure this year came from the interior linemen ie Fairley, Suh, and Williams (when healthy) KVB's production does not equal his contract, he was good his first year, average last year, and pretty awful this year.

It's a necessary move because the Lions need the cap space in the worst way, and are looking to get younger at defensive end. I don't expect Avril to be brought back either so we very much need Werner or Moore to fall to us at 5.

This is more surprising to me. I thought they'd hold on to VandenBosch, but I guess they had enough after he got his guaranteed half of the contract out of the way. It does look like they're committing to Avril, as they should, but for how much? Everybody saw bodies leaving our OLine too, but I definitely wasn't expecting Peterman to be the first to go.

EDIT: Did anybody else read that Pro Football Focus graded Cherilus as the #2 RT in the NFL last year? I know he got better, but I didn't think he improved that much. I guess I took it for granted he still sucked. They'll likely resign him as well, now.

They should cut everyone on that team except for Megatron, Stafford, Suh, Tulloch, and The other D Linemen from Auburn. I can't remember his name right now.

We might be able to poach some other rebuilding teams for DE's as well. Kruger from Baltimore would be a better get for the contract Avril turned down, and Dallas has 2 top DE's to resign this year, too. Drafting Jarvis Jones would even be an upgrade to Avril for less money.

KVB numbers

2010:

11 games, 34 tackles, 15 assists, 4 sacks

2011:

16 games, 26 tackles, 11 assists, 8 sacks

2012:

16 games, 28 tackles, 8 assists, 3.5 sacks

I'm guessing it is a money thing.

Vanden Bosch will turn 35 next season, had 3.5 sacks, and was scheduled to make around $7 million, so that was a no-brainer.  Peterman was mediocre, 31 years old, and was scheduled to make $3.2 million.  In the NFL, you have to pay your stars, but the surest way to cap hell is overpaying mediocre players.  Glad to see that the Lions are realizing this rather than hanging onto guys for sentimental value.

There are more on the list that should be cut...Lions running game and coverage in secondary is non existent..I would also get rid of the 5th pick for a couple of lower picks...

This seems about right. Hopefully they make the right decision and draft a number of OLineman in the next draft. They need to protect Stafford. If they can't block, everything else is totally worthless.

Homer Simpson: Good practice, kids. Now it's time for the easiest part of any coach's job. The cuts. Although I wasn't able to cut everyone I wanted to, I have cut a lot of you. Wendell is cut. Rudy is cut. Janey, you're gone. Steven, I like your hustle

[Steven smiles]

Homer Simpson: . That's why it was so hard to cut you

[Steven's smile drops]

Homer Simpson: . Congratulations, the rest of you made the team!

[random sighs of relief]

Homer Simpson: Except you, you and you.

KVB was not producing based on what we paid him.  Secondly when you look at all the dumb penalties our defense took, he also clearly wasn't providing any kind of veteran leadership that would justify keeping him around despite a drop in production.  I feel like Detroit really paid him so he could help the younger members of our front seven mature and that never happened.

This is actually a really smart move as there is very little risk with HUGE short term and maybe even long term upside. We know he has the talent to be successful, so he either gets to be happy being a lead dog and get the ball all day or he self destructs by continuing to be a dickhead and Fisher & Co. cut him during the preseason.

Not really surprised. I remember reading an article talking about how Peterman gave up 50+ qb pressures, which is an unheard of amount of  for a guard. Vanden Bosch was one of the worst DEs in the league in pressures per rush or something and on top of that teams were able to single blocked him with a TEs more than anyone.

It scares me that Detroit continues to have trouble on the offensive line.  I'm not saying Peterman was an answer, but if Peterman was a starter they rather quickly parted with, that doesn't give me much hope about depth.

The Lions have only been rebuilding since 1957; give them a little more time. Then you'll see them "restore the bore." Uh...roar.

Their MO has always been to rely on one or two stars, like a Barry Sanders, or a Megatron, or a Billy Sims, surround that player with mediocre talent, and hope like hell to make the playoffs and be one and done.

This is not a new strategy. They've never built the nucleus of a great team since Ford has been the owner.

They don't know how. I don't expect them to figure it out during what remains of my lifetime.
