OT: Patriots trade Richard Seymour to Raiders for 2011 first round pick
This seems completely out of the blue, I guess the Pats didnt think that they could resign him after the season.

The Raiders are a disaster. They had better resign Seymour or they just traded a first rounder for a short term rental.

Someone asked yesterday what the Pats were thinking with only Brian (sp?) Hoyer to back up Brady. Correct me if I'm wrong, but this should give them room to sign another QB, no?

They could use it for that, obviously, but it's not going to help their depth this year. And, it's a 2011 pick, so they wouldn't have this player until the Fall of 2011 at the earliest.

Seymour was overrated. He was probably the third best d-lineman they had, after Wilfork and Warren. Another shrewd move by Belichick.

The fact that they got a first rounder for him, especially from a team who is rebuilding, shows how out of touch al davis is.

to when Bill cut Lawyer Milloy, a long-time anchor of the defense who was past his prime, right before the 2003 season. Aside from the being free of the contract, that move really galvanized that defense and made everyone else feel the need to step up. I wouldn't be surprised to see a similar result here.

The pick is for 2011. It's completely possible that in 2 years from now that the Raiders could be a playoff team, especially with the addition of Seymour. Of course, knowing BB, he'll likely trade the 2011 1st rounder for a 2010 2nd and 3rd rounder.

Al Davis is running the team there is no way the Raid-duhs are sniffing the playoffs.
The only good think about the Raiders trading their pick is that they won't be able to reach and draft a player way too early.

I'm sure they'll trade up in order to reach and draft a player way too early because he ran a 4.33 at the combine.

once again, the senile Al Davis makes a poor trade. Seymour has been an excellent player in the league, but is 30, an age when often defensive line guys start on the decline. He's been having trouble staying healthy and hasn't made a pro bowl the last couple years. I think he'll also fall victim to the post Bellicheck syndrome, where we see guys that played at a high level in New England lose motivation after leaving the confines of the Patriot clubhouse (see: Woody, Damien). On the plus side, with Ellis and Seymour as their tackles, that's a good tandem, so maybe it works out for a year or two. But the Pats will have that #1 on their team 5-10 years.

Interesting move. You have to hand it to the Pats for not being afraid to make moves and revamp their team. Usually they are right.
I wonder if they will sign Terrance Taylor now that he is available and try to develop him?
