Brady Hoke is a phenomenal recruiter
At least according to Scout.com, Hoke 2013 class is absolutely fantastic. If Michigan has ever had a better rated recruiting class, I've never heard tell of it.
Some highlights:
#1 rated Running Back: Derrick Green
#1 rated Offensive Guard: Patrick Kugler
#2 rated Fullback: Wyatt Shallman
#3 rated QB: Shane Morris
#3 rated OT: Kyle Bosch
#4 rated Safety: Dymonte Thomas
#5 rated Tight End: Jake Butt
#6 rated Offensive Guard: Chris Fox
#7 rated Offensive Guard: David Dawson
#9 rated Cornerback: Jourdan Lewis
#11 rated Running Back: Deveon Smith
I will sort the commits first by rank and second by position. As you will see most of the top ten rated recruits are on the offensive side of the ball.

Secretary of the U.S. Navy and founder of the Michigan football Decatur Clan.
Via MVictors:
The fanatical faction of Michigan fandom, named for Capt. Stephen Decatur of the U.S. Navy who famously said, "Our Country! In her intercourse with foreign nations may she always be in the right; but right or wrong, our country!" Basically "I love the guy in charge, no matter who it is today. Go Blue!".
This is Napoleon:
But bottom line...
Yes, we must play Stratego at once.

Why would i feel stupid? I wasn't going to get my hopes up, and it was a post just to mess with the guy since he made a snark remark to the guy above him.
How did our last 5 star RB pan out?

according to Rivals was Kevin Grady. He had an uphill battle before he even got to campus. He was playing behind a guy from New York that went on to set all-time Michigan rushing records for carries and yards in a career, and is fourth all-time in touchdowns.
I think that Grady did a good job in his role at Michigan, other than getting in trouble with the law a few times. Grady was a risk before he stepped on campus but dont tell anybody that Lloyd Carr recruited players with character issues though, they will deny it to their death.
That said, comparing Grady to Green is not even cose to the same.

Even if he didn't get Green.
January 26th, 2013 at 6:29 PM ^
Well, the national media is taking notice. @simandel today noted with some astonishment that despite the SEC's run of dominance, UM and OSU have the top two classes in the country.
So OSU is right there. The best rivalry of all time will be so recognized once again.
Bring it.
January 26th, 2013 at 8:53 PM ^
Link. Per SI we had the #2 class, which was pretty close to what I remember as the consensus (for whatever that's worth).
BlueCE actually posted this here in a 2011 thread.
January 26th, 2013 at 9:11 PM ^
Replied to the wrong post, but that's okay. The article is very interesting.
Notable: Miami was ranked way down in the teens, and they don't mention familliar players, but by 2000 the Canes were absolutely loaded and setting themselves up for dominance.
Of course, a lot of the teams at the top of the list underperformed. UCLA and Michigan both had flashes of quality, but the classes were underwhelming. Retrospectively, though, our WR haul was even better than the #2 and #3 recruits in the country.

How in god's name was Cato June the #3 rated DB?!??!?!?

I was wondering when (or if) someone would make note of Hoke's work over the past year... It was a long road, but he and his staff, did a great job filling in the 2013 class, which will go down as one of the greatest.
January 26th, 2013 at 6:31 PM ^
Not to be a debbie downer, but we still dont know what the future of Poggi brings... does his trip to Alabama change anything?
January 26th, 2013 at 6:37 PM ^
Mgosadface. I noticed Poggi is not prominent in the OP chart--on purpose?
Still a great class regardless.
The only thing that's missing are speed gamebreakers on the edge--a top receiver or something. I'm concerned about it, but today's bump makes me feel a lot better about the offense going forward.
January 26th, 2013 at 6:42 PM ^
No anti Poggi bias here. I thing Poggi is higher rated by Rivals. I was just making another of the already numerous lists I've made this weekend, and Poggi ended up where he ended up. SImple as that.
January 26th, 2013 at 6:57 PM ^
Fair enough. I hadn't meant that you were trying to dog on Poggi, just that perhaps you were mentally preparing yourself for disappointment, but your explanation is sensible.

That's what jumped out at me, too. 3 of the top 7 guards, that's insane.
January 26th, 2013 at 6:54 PM ^
why Chuck Norris WISHES he was Brady Hoke. In fact, there are several reasons...
If Brady Hoke were to punch you in the face, you would have to fight off the urge to thank him.
His business card simply says “I’ll call you.”
If he were to mail a letter without postage, it would still get there.
January 26th, 2013 at 6:55 PM ^
But look at our WR's! Hoke can't bring in elite talent!!!!!
/s x100000000
Hoke has done a great job recruiting and bringing in a staff that can get it done as well.
January 26th, 2013 at 7:12 PM ^
But between the guys we have and Darboh and Chesson. I'd bet my life savings we'll have an All-Time type Michigan WR in the group. Someone making people clamour for the #1 jersey again.
January 26th, 2013 at 10:12 PM ^
Based on what? On how when we had a horrible recieving game to the point where we had to add our back up quaterback to the corps and they (freshman wideouts) still didn't make an impact?
Look, I think we can win with who we have but lets not act like we have anything particularily special in the pantry.
It is what it is bro.
January 27th, 2013 at 12:41 AM ^
They were true freshmen. Frosh wideouts don't see the field if they can't block, which is why a lot of them don't play.
January 26th, 2013 at 7:41 PM ^
That's exactly what I was thinking. I won't pretend to know a whole lot about all the assistants, but I've read really good things about Coach Montgomery. And of course, there's Greg Mattison. Urb himself called GM the best recruiter he'd ever seen. Some here like to bag on Urb, but when he says something like that, I'm paying attention.
Oh, and yes, Coach Hoke is pure badass.
January 26th, 2013 at 7:06 PM ^
One of the other things that really is remarkable about this class and probably puts it in some rarified air is that the average star ranking per Scout is 3.8 (I think it was around 3.6 last year). The average position ranking, has moved up seven spots from 27 to 20, which I imagine is pretty difficult to do given the competition for some of the top recruits at various positions. It's an excellent trend and indeed evidence of awesome recruiting by Hoke and the staff.
January 26th, 2013 at 7:13 PM ^
I agree Brady Hoke is a great recruiter, but I think his coaching and how quickly he got everyone to buy in when he arrived is what sets him apart.
January 26th, 2013 at 7:19 PM ^
I can't wait until we get back to when everyone in the entire stadium knows we're going to run the ball, and then we run it for at least 5 yards anyway.
January 26th, 2013 at 7:20 PM ^
I don't know, guys. Why couldn't he find a LS that was nationally ranked? That really puts a damper on the class for me.
/s....before I have people tell me that Scout doesn't rank the LS.
January 26th, 2013 at 10:19 PM ^
I would be, and am, critcal of the longsnapper scholarship considering that we signed 4 linemen last year and 6 this year; I would imagine one of them could specialize in long snapping; its not like longsnapping is an inate skill that some people are born with and others are not; I'd like to think that one or two of the new guys could focus on specializing in long snapping...
I will now step off my soapbox to the roar of the crowd!
