OT: I retired today.

Yes, thanks to the University of Michigan, I met a wonderful woman that went on to become a doctor and allow me to quit being a bench-jockey chemist and follow my real dreams.*

So here's to her, and retirement at the age of 35.

 

*Currently to build a kick-ass Inn/Lodge on acreage by South Haven and serve up some killer trenchers of beef to clientele.

when I fly out for the the ND game next season, i would be staying with my cousin in Novi, that's not too far i guess or am I confusing that with South Lyon, man it's been 22 years out here, i'm starting to forget shit like that, I haz a sad.

Congrats lordfoul, maybe you can use your chemistry background to come up with some killer marinades for said beef.

I still have 15 years to go!  I'm 20 years into my current career and will call it quits at age 64! The only drag about retiring in your 60s is your body starts falling apart!  I probably will have time to hit the slopes but my knees probably won't hold up. It would be great to retire now or 15 years ago! Oh well, may be I can just to to all the home and road Michigan Football games!

Becoming a business owner is basically the opposite of retiring.  It's like doubling your employment.  It's will suck away almost all of your free time, just be ready for that, OP.  And good luck...

Don't be discouraged! Statistically 1 out of every 10 new businesses fail. However the 2nd and 3rd attempts usually succeed. People who don't give up learn a lot on their first try and are usually successful creating a business on their second or third attempt!

Congrats....unless you have kids at home, in which case you will be working harder.  Also, you will have to have dinner on the table every night and keep the house clean...

More time with the kids will be great, but I have a have a high tolerance for disorder so keeping the house clean will probably take some outside help.  Luckily a doctor's salary these days should make me more of a home manager than anything else.

Of course like any good chemist, I love to cook.

don't give the privilege of raising your children, and 20,000 of the best hours of their life, to strangers.  nobody can impart to your children the excellence in character and achievement like a parent.   all other things pale in importance to your children.  it's a blessing - seize it!

greatest move he/you'd ever make if you're not doing it already.  my beloved bride (also an attorney) does a phenomenol job at it.  i just finished reading to the quiverfull at the dinner table. 

 

for the OP that retired, do yourself and your kids a favor, teach them!

Well, your wife is a better woman than I!  Yes, I believe homeschooled kids do learn more, as public education has to wait for kids to catch up.  But I guess I am too lazy, and my kids listen better to others.  I also like them in school with everyone else, and I like my part time gig where I can go to Court and yell at people once a month.  I also fear that since I'm a little wacky, I wouldn't want too much of me to rub off on them. 

Is there an "MGOBLOG" section on the curriculum?  Now I might reconsider.  ha ha....  That's awesome that homeschooling works for you two.....

a father and son are standing in front of mt. rushmore.   you can see lincoln, washington, jefferson and t. roosevelt in the background.   the conversation goes like this:

son: dad, do you think they'll ever build a monument  to homeschoolers?

dad:  you're looking at it. 

never yelled in court but one time, when a dude shot the bailiff right before we were supposed to go back in session.  that was a dandy of a day. 

and we have all sorts of curriculum suggestions if you get serious about it.   remember, up until the last century or so, homeschooling was the norm and i don't think anyone thinks that gov't school is a success (generalizing) or efficient with our tax money.   you would do a great job  - remember, nobody loves your kids like you do and you can get plenty of interaction with other families if you want to.  OP has all of these things at his disposal.

But teachers don't raise kids, parents do. It's also incredibly naive to think that someone with a focused degree like chemistry would be more suited to educate a child than someone who has a masters in education. Horrible idea if your only qualifications are that you're a parent. To each his own, but it's a bad place to throw out this discussion.

but i'll guess you have never been homeschooled and don't homeschool your own children, correct?   the average homeschool educated child scores in the 85-90% in national tests.  they win an extraordinary amount of academic competitions relative to their per capita population, such as spelling bees, science fairs, etc.   contrast that with, say, the detroit public school system that has a 24% high school graduation rate and we are all aware of the tragedies that have occurred in the public schools such as the newton shooting.  things have changed since we went to school.

with today's access to technology and computers homeschooling can be done at an extraordinary level.  all it takes is a parent, like the OP, who loves their kids and has enough discipline to form a lesson plan and a reasonable schedule for the kids. 

but beyond the ABC's, it's character that matters most in the world.  nobody will character train OP's kids like OP and his wife.  nobody will read to them, teach them, counsel them, care for them like OP and his wife.   putting your kids on a bus at 0645 hrs and picking them up from day care at 5 or 6 pm - that's the definition of 'horrible idea'.  OP has a choice and hopefully he will make it.
