Scouting Report: Corey Holmes
I put together a scouting report on Fort Lauderdale (FL) St. Thomas Aquinas wide receiver Corey Holmes, who at one time proclaimed Michigan as his leader. I was pretty impressed by how ready he appears to be for college, although he checked in at the recent Under Armour combine at 166 lbs., so that's an obvious place for improvement. Of the 10 receivers Michigan has offered so far, he's perhaps the most polished one.

I'm guessing an Ohio offer will come soon. This kid does remind me of Roy Roundtree. Good comparison.

That's a pretty good offer sheet he has, and WR is a position at which most of us would like to see more playmakers (although having DG at QB showed our current corps wasn't as weak as it had seemed).
Any idea on who his current "leader" is?

Michigan is still his assumed leader according to 247

Of the two sites who have rated him, he doesn't seem to be that highly ranked (#36 receiver, and #48 receiver). Do you think he is the type of prospect who will rise in the rankings over the summer, or does he just not have the truly elite athleticism to move up much?

I think his combine performance might give him a little bit of a boost. I also think his lack of size hurts him a little bit. The guys who are highly rated seem to be big and/or athletic; or they seem to be 5'11" and faster than a Taco Bell bowel movement.
The Roundtree comparison kind of mimics that idea. Roundtree played as a redshirt freshman and put up pretty good numbers that year and as a redshirt sophomore. He had a down year in 2011 and then a bit of a resurgence in 2012. He's still not a guy who screams "NFL superstar" but most of us wouldn't mind getting another Roundtree.

"Faster than a Taco Bell bowel movement..."
It's right up there with a bad RB "going down more often than a 5 dollar hooker on nickel night."

Craig James allegedly did what??

I think he's the type of kid who could get up around 195 or 200, but he doesn't look to have the frame to get up to 215 or 220 like some of Michigan's past top performers at WR (Terrell, Edwards, etc.).
Speed isn't Holmes's main asset, so I don't think that would be a huge issue. You wouldn't want him to be a lumbering wideout like Ricardo Miller, but he's not a burner anyway. He's more of an intermediate guy.

In my opinion it looks like he has about the same kind of speed as Jason Avant, which isn't really a limitation, because he makes it up in other areas like great route running and having a big catch radius. Also, with being sooo skinny he might actually get faster by adding weight.

He is definitely on the rise. He had an impressive UA camp and was under the radar until the end of last season. He also helped his team win a state title. http://247sports.com/Article/Under-Armour-All-America-Combine-Report-11…

You know I've been thinking and the Ghost of Yost was right yesterday Magnus. Your absolutely free analysis of players Michigan has offered is not up to my demanding standards as well. So either spend more of your own, uncompensated time providing me and others better no cost insight or stop posting.
It really bothers me when posters providing me free information garnered on their own free time that I'm not obligated to read in any way don't do it as well I expect.

I don't always agree with Magnus... but when I do, he is right.

The only thing that bothers me more is when I click on an OT link and have to read the information in the post..

Magnus may be the Jackie Treehorn of mgoblog, but like Jackie, he draws a lot of water around here. Stay out of Malibu Lebowski.

He reminds me of a taller and slower Marvin Harrison. He is really smooth and subtle in his movements.

Tape is impressive. The kids a baller. Love to see him in the winged helmet!

This is probably the best put together highlight reel I've seen in my two years of following Michigan recruiting. The production quality is really high and the multiply angles are a really nice touch.
I like the way he come across the middle on crossing routes. This part of his game reminds me of Braylon. He can take a 5-7 yard drag route and turn it into 15 or 20. I agree that he'll need to add weight, but considering the competition he faces now I think he would be a very welcome addition and could play almost immediately.

Scout lists him as 6-0 and 180.
I'm curious how really likely it is he'll come north, especially now that he's getting closer attention after his camp performances.

The heights and weights in my post are what were relayed from the UA combine last week.

I wasn't questioning your info, since it's obviously more recent than Scout's. It's amazing how quickly kids can grow in their high school years.
